Speaking of buffs: you are missing the essence of speed spell. The book can be bought in town, and the spell is contained in the Tome of the Time. And of course, casting it with the staff equipped provides more speed and gives higher duration. I wouldnt leave house without it (and rather leave Ringil behind in Mandos than that spellbook).

I found exactly ZERO Tomes of the Time during my stay in Mandos. Heck, it took me almost 38 clvls before I found a Tome of Knowledge; that Perception Rod has a LOT of miles on it. I found plenty of Speed potions in Mandos and just used those (got me to about +20).

My Spell-power is perfectly adequate to handle anything in the early dungeons, so I'm keeping Ringil for now just for the Speed boost (Ringil plus EoS puts me at a temporary +50). Later on I'll get a different source of speed and switch the Mage Staff (or something better) back in. I've got NO hit points right now, so having +50 speed is rather... comforting. :-)
