Annoyed... the one time I find Guants of FA early, it's with a Golem, who has no use for it. This is the second iteration of this character, the first of which died in the Dlvl 6 quest, which happened to be "Lousy, King of the Louses."
Thoughts so far:
Golem Magic-Eater is a good combo, because INT isn't really all that necessary for Magic-Eaters. Magic-Eaters actually play a lot like Priests (considering they also have 5 max blows, and blows/rnd effects are exactly the same).
Main Pros of ME in the early game: Free ID, once you find/buy a staff of Perception. Ability to fight attrition battles, thanks for Staves of Cure Light Wounds.
Main Cons of ME: Things tend to recharge kind of slowly. And I have no idea how the adding charges formula works. For example, if you have 17 on Magic Missile, and then eat another Wand with 14 charges, it somehow comes out to 21, instead of 31.
The Golem AC bonus was not as large as the spoiler page said it would be (starting at 10, instead of 20). What else?
Oh yes. Sexy, of course, means that if ever you see a white 'r' or 'I,' you should be heading for the stairs. Got ambushed a record number of times walking to Telmora (I think 9 or 10), and one of them started with me being surrounded by Manes. I had to blow my !oSpeed to escape.

No interesting weapon or armor finds so far, but did somehow manage to grab a Ring of Reinforce Muscle, and a book of Pattern Sorcery. Too bad the Ring was only +1, but it's still better than nothing. Stat ups so far have been pretty good, only remember 1 WIS and 1 CHA.

Blew through the Orc Camp quest incredibly easily, thanks to free Teleports, and the Longbow. Got a +3 Elven Cloak as a reward, which is pretty useless (dammit, I want another Elven Cloak of Bat!).
The BM then had a Long Bow of Velocity (+12, +15) for sale, but sadly, a string of bad luck in the Monster Arena left me with 0 cash instead of 15000, and by the time I accrued the 15k the normal way, it was no longer there.
Still no Staves of Haste seen...

The trick to winning in the Monster Arena is to keep gambling 1gp, until the Monster Arena gives odds of monster looking something like:
11.45:1
1.71:1
3.01:1
2.60:1
(I just made these numbers up, but similar numbers occur fairly often). In this case, gambling on the 1.71:1 will win at least 80% of the time (unless it's something very obviously wrong, such as an orc, while another monster is a Light Hound). It's a bit of an AI exploit, I guess, but I've never been known to shy away from those ^^
I don't usually do Dice Slots very often though... that only gets called on once in a blue moon.

A number of stat potions, a number ego weapons, and best of all, a !oPolymorph! I quaffed it, and picked up the list of mutations you now see... Well, I have my rotten luck getting Staves of Speed, but in terms of mutation, ESP seems to love me. ^^

The BM stocked a Staff of Power! It started at 3 charges, I ran to Zul and powered it up to 5, and then read my 4 Scrolls of Recharging on it, supercharging it to 13 (!) charges! Fail rate is kinda high at 49% though, but still. I should be ready for Cloning pits before too long... I feel that all I'm missing is a Shield of Resistance... once I get that, I can swap in Dasai, and then I should be strong enough to take on everything in there, barring some very OOD unique.

Well, I had a good number (15+) of Healing and Resistance Potions, so I decided to brute-force the Cloning Pits at Clvl 34. Ended up costing about 5 Healing, and maybe 10 Resistance, when Gachapins went out of control alternating summoning Hydras and breathing Chaos, which polymorphed the summoned Hydras. That took a bit of careful detection-range treading to clear up.
Of the random monsters, Fangorn was the only one of note. Normally, I don't think I can take him, so instead, I continually Teleport-Othered, until he got stuck in one of the chasms between lava and water, and then proceed to nuke him down.
Got a decent number of artifacts--the randart bow, Corwin, Thengel, Dethanc, Hammerhand, Rohirrim, and Colluin.
Still have not found any shields of resistance though...

Sukeban's making good progress. I decided to take on Habu rather than running away, despite the possbility of double-Manastorm death, and was well rewarded with the Hell Collar. With that, I can now cover all resists, but base speed is kinda slow at +3. If only I could get a good randart Shield...
No Wand of Rockets yet, but the Wand of Striking from the Arena is actually quite useful, as well as the Rod of Drain Life. Other than those anti-Unique attacks, I mainly use Wand of Lightning Balls for everyday use (I'm up to like 60 charges).
Looking at this, it seems to me that the Magic-Eater's primary non-melee attack should be Wand of Rockets, rather than Staff of Mana Storm. I mean, I'm only clvl 38, and I'm already doing more melee damage than the Staff...

The main attack that hurts if Breath Disenchantment, where you can take 375 damage even with RDisenchant, and I think I actually took that much from the breath, thanks to an unlucky resist roll.

Longest quest ever. Nothing too nasty was created at random, but the Father Dagons summoned a few minor Demons, and some of those summoned Byakees and Bloodletters. The problems started when the Byakees summoned Lesser Balrogs and Barons of Hell, which then summoned Dark Youngs, who then summoned even more greater demons. >_< I blew through all 6 !oHealing and 10 !oResistance that I brought with me, and at one point was brought down to 30 HP, when my Teleport magic failed twice in a row (all my scrolls had burned up by that point).
Eventually, again, I used the Aggravation to do Detection range pulling, and killed them one by one.
Checking through the loot, I find: Nimthanc, Narthanc, Isildur, Arvedui, and Boots of Shiva's Avatar!! ARGH!!! So, I go back, and I pick up that great item, the Scoll of Acquirement. Reading it on Dragon's Liar 60 gave the usual crap, a Shield of Resist Fire.

The thing is, only the first item you absorb gives "full" charges, so I think you should *always* try to supercharge the first time. For example, if you first eat something with 15 charges, you pick up the full 15. But, if you eat 8 first, and then eat another 12, you'll end up with 11 or 12 charges. Base speed is +3 from Hagen, and a lot of low resistances covered, but I'm missing Nexus, Chaos, and Disenchant.
I think I might go the long route and collect lots of everything this time. With Elliot's new clvl winner record, I'm going to have to go for something else... like no resources spent :-P

Was abe to finish that quest, thanks to Aggravation. It was an open Arena level, so I was having some trouble approaching Jasra without her going crazy summoning tons of 11-headed hydras, but eventually I was able to pull off the detection-range pulling, thanks to Detect Evil. Moved to a corridor between the south wall of the dungeon and a room, and pitched the fight there.
She dropped... Knight's Shield of RFire, Leather Scale Mail of RAcid, Stone of Lore, and... Grimoire of Power. >_< Gee, that was useful.
A little while later, on Castle 42, I found both Arvedui and Anarion, but unfortunately Anarion was generated with RDark (less useful), so I'm sticking with my Reflection shield and RNether armor for now.
Also found a Wand of Dragon's Breath a little while ago.. possibly right nowish is the only time its useful, before everything starts picking up RBase.

Oops, you're right Elliot... I forgot that Jack's Cloak gives ESP, so right it should be a "yea", but only a "yea" not a "YEA" because th +7 Steath is worthless.
Picked up Boots of Speed (+5) shortly afterwards, and that gave me substantially more confidence. Whipped Shuten-Dogi for dlvl 44, and he didn't drop anything interesting. Maybe I should go get the Staff of Healing soon?

Finished Doom Quest 2 with the use of 2 !oResistance. In addition to the nice Staff of Healing reward, I also managed to pick up a Staff of Dispel Evil and a Wand of Dragon's Flame inside the quest! 17 charges of Dispel Evil + 14 charges of Healing is happy ^^

Well, I got to playing Heng again after a bit of a hiatus. After exploring Castle 50ish for a bit with no spectacular encounters or finds, I completed the Killing Fields, and then decided to try Cloning Pits at Clvl 36 with 6 !oHealing, 4 !oResistance, 17 Charges of _oHealing at 43% fail, and +8+10 speed (+5 from Boots of Speed, +3 from Hagen).
Had an incredibly easy time, as I teleported next to the Queen Ants immediately, and as quickly able to dispatch them and the Gachapins. Of the randoms, the only two of note were Raal's Tome and a Master Lich, which managed to summon a Dracolich.
Cleaning up, I found the usual crap weapons, and thought I was going to have nothing extra to show for it other than Boromir, when a Executioner Sword made me do a double-take. SLAYER!!! AWESOME!!
My damage output just doubled, and I gained Vampirism to top it off!

I found Stormbringer while hunting down a Wanted Unique, and with its 3 extra high resists, I decided to use that over Slayer for the time being.
Dlvl 56 quest for Raou was way too easy, and poetically I got no interesting drops. Defeated the Black Reaver easily in the Arena, and headed to Dragon Lair to read the scroll. I got actually 2 pretty good items this time around: Mook and Hurin. Unfortunately, Jack's Cloak and Stormbringer beat those two hands down. Ah well.

Sukeban now has all the markings of a winner: randart shield with +3 Speed and +3 INT, Sexy Swimsuit, Slayer and Stormbringer. All resistances except Light and Fear covered at the moment. Speed is +7 right now, with noticeable weaknesses in her kit in Bow and Light slots (Long Bow of Accuracy and Yeduson, respectively)

Base speed is +12, so I think I'm venturing a bit too far. Dlvl 76 quest gave Numenor, which might be useful later on, if I manage to complete the Justice list (at 15/20 right now). NOT looking forward to hunting down "It" though.
In other news, became Champion of the Arena easily, and am holding off the inevitable for a while (at least until I can get a buttload more speed). Have 2 =oExtraShots if I manage to find Feanor.
Still using Stormbringer, despite having found the Jewel, because it's still my best source of RNether. INT and CON are both at 18/210 right now, though CON will drop to 18/180 whenever I find a good RoSpeed (it's on RoReinforceMuscle+3 right now).
On 2.11.2005 11:53 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: [Dlvl 84] [Clvl 46]
A happy skirmish with Tiamat and Combat Echizen later, I'm at +21 base speed with 18/*** CON and all resists covered at the expense of ESP. Fortunately, I have 13 Rods of Detection this time around.
On 2.11.2005 14:52 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: [Dlvl 88] [Clvl 46]
Gothmog dropped the cool randart Xbow and Cambeleg, and after a whole bunch of equipment shuffling, I can get 18/200 INT and CON even with Moronic Mutation, and +22 base speed, plus all resists covered. Main sticking point is the lack of ESP. It would also be nice to pick up another source of RNexus, because Thror is likely going to be my end-game boots.

I fearfully bested Oberon, hoping against double or triple move death at +19 speed, and managed to do so with some trouble (consumed a !oRestoreMana, which gives about 1/3 of max charges back, or about 8 300HP healing in my case).
I have Santa Claus and It left on my wanted list.. Anyone know what the best way to hunt down these two are?
Speed is a bit low for my tastes.. but monsters have not been cooperative with the RoSpeed drops. >_<
On 6.11.2005 19:42 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: I hate when It is a wanted monster. The only way I ever seem to kill It is by accident, or if it starts speaking and there are not other uniques around.
Santa Claus should just show up eventually. I don't think he is particular to any one location.

Victory!
Rather easy, expect for an unexpected triple move, which the Serpent spent doing Dispel Magic, Toxic Waste, and Invoke Logrus, and brought me under 100 HP. Otherwise, the HUGE amounts of Destruction and Healing available to me made the fight very very easy. I brought along 3 Mushrooms of Restoration, 2 !o*Healing* and 2 !oRestoreMana, and ended up using only 1 !oRestoreMana total (plus a charge from the Charmed Pendant). Disintegration and Rockets were very nice for ranged attacks. More detailed analysis of class later..

Overall analysis:
Golem: A great race to play Magic-Eater with, because of the No-Stun. Thus, 0% fail is always 0% fail. Innate RPoison and FA and SI and high HP are also nice. -5 to INT is not so nice, but can be overcome in the end-game with many +INT item. Didn't even find Indra, and was still able to get 18/240 INT (making room for Moronic Mutation) without Silicone by using Gogo and Jewel and Numenor. Of course, having a 18/130 self was really helpful ^^
Sexy: Again, I will claim that Sexy isn't so bad, you just have to learn a completely different playing style if you started from playing Ninjas. The Swimsuit is a bit more rare than I first thought (partially because Rei managed to find 2), and in retrospect, it's not worth putting on UNLESS you can artifact it to pick up resistances/speed. +3 stats is nice, but resistances and AC generally are more important in the game.
Magic Eaters:
Great class, easy to play, not too much patience required. Let me qualify the last statement:
1) Around clvl 20 or so, you should easily have enough money to afford a Staff of Speed from the BM (and you only need to buy 1, actually). That means you for all practical purposes always be hasted. This is about as early as you can get it, quite frankly. (Sorcery High-Mage gets it at 17, but that's an extreme example)
2) While charges are slow to recharge, the recharge rate is based on the number of charges. Thus, with 99 charges of whatever, you rarely if ever run out. And if you do run out, Sleeping at the Inn will fully restore all your charges. So, while you might have trouble clearing a level with 10 uniques, you should be able to hunt down any one unique easily.
3) Holiness and Healing are guaranteed rewards from Arena and quest, respectively. These two are really important parts of your arsenal, so it's really nice that they're guaranteed. Other than that, Staff of Power really rocks, but I didn't manage to find one in the last iteration. Offensively, your best weapons are Wands of Disintegrate and Rockets (doing 300 and 400 damage at clvl 50). These are also kind of rare. Thus, Magic-Eaters, I would argue, have pretty good replayability, since your arsenal will be quite different every time.
Staves of Destruction are quite common, which is incredibly useful for the final fight.
Other nice aspects of the class: being able to cast while Blind, knowing exactly how much damage you will do with each attack, not having to worry about drain charge attacks from Liches, etc. Fighting level is pretty strong--same as Priest, without the Edged/Blessed restrictions.
Fun fun class!
On 8.11.2005 18:45 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: A brief try on the Unicorn later, I decide I it's not happening. The main problems are the Time melee attack, but it's Disintegration/Summon combo. Plus, it blinks like mad, and I don't have a Staff of Power so I can't even damage it when it's not in melee range and there's monsters in between.
