This time, a magic-eater.
I see the ladder lacks well-advanced magic-eater, so I hope this will be a bit of informative idea.

The magic-eater tends to be regarded as a sort of spellcaster class, but that's somewhat incorrect.
It's not impossible to go the pure spellcaster way but still that's very hard and not recommended, because -

Although magical devices like wands and staffs provide vast sort of attack spells, they are usually weak compared to real "spells" and especially so at early stages, and in midgame you cannot do almost anything against monsters which are resistant to elemental attacks.
In addition to that, although you can have large nunber of charges for all kinds of devices once you absorb them enough, they are usually slow to recharge, and you are not likely to find so many useful wands and staffs!
(so missle weapons should not be ignored in early stages).

On the other hand, magic-eaters don't have actual MP, unlike other spellcasters, and thus they don't have any kind of restriction on their armors, and can totally ignore 'drain mana force' melee attacks. Also they rarely 'carry' wands and staffs and will be invulnerable to 'drain charges' kind of attacks too.
And (staffs of) Manastorm, the final attack spell for magic-eaters, is virtually melee-range attack.
They are indeed decent fighters if not powerful, like priests and mindcrafters (-2 to con is a bit annoying, though.) I would even say the initial primary stat is not int!

Some hasty players will not care for this class
(have to find a number of wands of rocket and that'll need some work!) and you will never be the true champion in the Arena, but still powerful and very fun to play.

This time I am very lucky to be able to buy a staff of speed and a staff of dispel evil, at this point!
These things make me much powerful. The failure rate for the staff of speed is 43% now, but there is no penalty for failings (no charges will be lost and no MP to consume away!) and I will rarely be at +0 speed in the battle from now on.

Ah the magic eater. I think one of the keys to success with that class is patience. My best one is on the ladder (Slurper II) and got fried by Habu, didn't care to startup another one after that.

An early high-level wand/rod/staff find (in dungeon or BM) can speed things up. And the sooner you get your hands on a staff of speed, the better :). To have speed AND dispel evil already you're very lucky!

Pretty disappointed in the overall damage output of the magic-eater though. Still, it'd be a neat accomplishment to win with one.

Haven't met Jack of Shadows but Bull Gates' blinding attack was unexpectedly annoying...
I am able to activate the staff of teleportation even when blinded, though.

Now I don't think I will go deeper in the castle. Most enemies there are far beyond my power...
and without Nether and Chaos resistance how can I take on monsters down there anyway?

I'll go to the dragon's lair now. Though there is still very high possibility of being instakilled...

Searching around and killing ancient dragons in the Dragon's Lair, I have been able to find better equipment. And various useful wands and staffs too, although not totally satisfying.

I always recharge wands and staffs at the tower of socery in the town, and then overcharge them
with scroll of recharging, so I am usually able to have some more charges for useful devices
(for example I have 10 charges for the wand of striking although I consumed only one from the Arena!) but this method is still a bit risky and as is often the case I broke the wand of dragon's flame I've newly found, and I am just looking for one now.

@Mars - Ahh - That makes it possibly worthwhile for the Magic Eater to get the charmed pendant then. Yes it is the reward for the old castle.

Nameless - What particular combo are you using to kill the Ancient Dragons? I'm just trying to work out when to hit the Dragon's Lair with my Magic Eater - I figure it's too early at the moment at chlvl 26. Overcharging's not a bad idea - Do you just read one scroll of recharge on a fullly charged item or can you get away with 2?

On 23.7.2005 12:44 namelessman@nowhere.in.jp wrote:
>What particular combo are you using to kill the Ancient Dragons?

Well, it depends...
Ancient Dragons are not that bad (AMHD is an exception though) and I think I don't need any particular tactics but just one thing: stay away from great wyrms! (and drolems and dracolichs and U's and L's and...)
I mainly used the wand of Drain Life and some ball spell, and sometimes the staff of dispel evil, and then hit them to death.
Once I've got the wand of dragon's frost, things got easier.
If you don't have powerful attack spells, you can use missle weapons here too! And, turn on the output option "Display actual path before shooting" and aim your weapon wisely here.

And you can be always hasted using the staff of speed, and you can heal up quickly with the staff of cure light wounds, and ...you can think of your own way to fight and I think that's fun.

But the Dragon's Lair is very dangerous place if you don't have ESP and if you are not enough stealthy. That's why I dived deep in the castle to get the staff of *Destruction* first!
Go into the lair and whenever you are not confident that you are perfectly safe, use *destruction* or teleport level without any hesitation.

And, talking about overcharging... well, first I read one scroll of recharging and if the wand or staff is charged enough (say 7 or 8 charges) I'd stop here. if not, simply use one more on the wand.
But getting too greedy is a vice it seems, and I am still searching for a wand of dragon's flame.
Somehow it just doesn't appear :(

I've cleared the Cloning Pits and killed some of mid-level uniques and things look better now,
and my next destination is the Volcano.
The failure rate for the staff of manastorm will not be zero however you're powerful, but it's still of some use, I suppose.

Still lacking the sound resistance as usual but I think I have enough strength to take on most of the uniques there now.

I thought the guardian on 76th floor was Kronos but actually was Wong!

I managed to kill him in the end but it was really hard, mainly because I wasn't ready for him, having only one potion of restore mana and no mashroom of restoring.
And to make matters worse, I made a typing error and amidst the battle I involved him in
*Destruction* instead of firing a rocket!
(Typed "ma3", not "mb3" - you will understand when you play a magic-eater!)

But I had some scrolls of recharging, and luckily there was a wand of rockets on the floor, picked it up and fired it directly at him instead of absorbing it.
And then fired my own remaining "charges" and then recharged the wand with the scrolls and finished him eventually. Whew!

Maybe I'd better use macros by the way?

That was relatively easy: I have enough charges for the staff of healing, and the staff of animate dead worked very well.
The character dump now you're seeing is the one before the fight.

After all no potion of healing or *healing* is used in the fight. I used just one potion of restore mana (mainly for 7 more charges for the staff of healing), and scrolls of summon kin and summon pet, which is rather useless against other tough monsters.

At this stage the magic-eater is very powerful. You can use teleportation and *Destruction* freely and you can use powerful weapons like wands of drain life, striking, disintegrete, dragon's breath, rockets, the staff of starlight, holiness, power, mana storm... and some utility spells like animate dead, stone to mud, restoration, earthquake... and powerful healing spells too!
I feel like I am invincible now! (still there is no way to defeat the metal bubble in the Arena though)

The Destoroyer dropped the mighty war hammer of Aule, but I'd rather use the staff of mana storm, so Grayswandir is better I think.
Some more uniques to defeat, then Oberon and the Serpent.

There are still dozens of unique monsters left alive, Shub-Niggurath, Azathoth, Ymir, Loki, Kronos, Caldarm the Third, Raphael, Nodens, and Sauron, and...and...

He summoned the Unicorn twice, and then restlessly cast manastorms and I thought it's too dangerous to continue the fight.
Maybe dozens of *Healing* and more speed and one more rod of healing are needed to defeat him.
I think even the Unicorn is easier, or at least she's not as dangerous to me...

You're right about Nodens being difficult to kill. When he gets wounded, he seems to heal himself almost every turn, for something like 560hp. So if you can't do *more* than that in damage, he is really unkillable (I can't believe you got him). I've had characters fight him in the 1-3 star range for over an hour before giving up ... and I had one character (a Chaos HMage with a 500hp 0% fail manastorm) that killed Nodens, but died the very next move to his angelic summons (This after a *very* long fight). He is very annoying, and often I would rather fight the unicorn, which I almost never do.

But a powerful melee character with passwall can handle him rather easily ...
