Something got scrambled in this robot's naming circuit. Blastic Tacter is really just my homage to Tactic Blaster, an interesting Lucky Android Magic Eater winner that I noticed on the Hengband World Score Server. Its quite a combo, really. Despite the apparent -5 Int biff, one needs to realize that the normal -25% mana biff does not apply to magic eaters. Plus, Lucky really helps with an android ... Just look at all my awesome stuff ;-) (I just finished a pit of Great Ice Wyrms!)

Geez ... I should have played an archer with all the awesome shooters I've seen so far. Having only seen a single !oCon all game, I was determined to get one from the Black Market when this awesome +6 Con shooter showed up instead. Its a shame I've been focusing on bolts all game. 828hp/round with arrows is archer caliber damage and now I really need more seeker arrows :)

Alot has changed since my last post. On finding a +2 attacks ring I shed my first RoExtra Shots, and on finding Tulkas, the second. Also, switched back to the +4 Speed XBow. At that point, I decided I *must* get the Jewel of Judgement somehow. It has for some reason, always eluded my magic eaters, which is a shame since it really helps in finding those rare magical devices.

Hastur dropped the pretty mirror, which gives some ridiculous 4,100,000cp, and is pretty much the only way for me to get off CL47-8 where I have been stuck for about 5 hours. And Numenor helps with a couple of resists, making a fine replacement for Thranduil.

So now I still await the Jewel, but do so at DL76 which is deep enough for wands of rockets, I think. I got tired of aggravating so I switched to Quickthorn, but now that Klingsor dropped Destiny, I'd rather switch to that (restoring my +2 attacks first, of course). But now I *really* need that stupid Jewel to fill Chaos resistance ... aaaaargh!

That's a nice cloak you got there!

(I've been too busy with applications to make a concerted effort on any *band.. my vanilla character died after finding Boots of Speed (+10) at like dlvl 35.)

I've always hated the Android construction method of determining level. That's why I usually opt for Golem over android.

How'd you get the consumed magic devices to show?

Hey Dave! I couldn't find the old 1.70 tarball but stumbled over instructions on how to checkout the actual source. So I'm really running the trunk for 1.70 hengband. Before it was abandoned, it looks like a couple new features were added, one of them being the display of Magic Eater powers (Another is that shop inventory displays will use your entire monitor which means everything always fits on a single page for me). I can't remember the details for getting the trunk off the top of my head now, but I could find them if you like. You would need to compile from the source ...

Android construction oscillates between OMFG and *yawn*. Between finding something awesome that boosts you to CL40 early and between getting stuck waiting for good equipment to show. As a lucky droid, I really abused town scumming early on, and that also helps with Magic Eater base supplies, though I was unable to get any of the really good stuff, just lots of Speed. Artifacts are another story, as I picked up the +4 speed cross bow and my *El Armour from the BM, the latter at the expense of selling everything but the stuff on my back (I even sold the Glaive of Pain!) The cloak came from a pit of Ice Wyrms, which came in very handy as I only had 550hp at the time and much less than 95 !oResist Cold ... 2 breaths would have killed me.

This is what happens when you wear the best fitting equipment ... back down to CL48 with Thorin. But with my previous kit, melee was about 200hp/round, so I really had to rely on shooting and magic eater spells. Since the good wands are elusive (so far, only 1 Disintegrate (11 charges) and 1 Mana Storm (blew up) and 1 Healing (8->12 charges) have been found in the dungeon. 1 Rockets (10 charges) from the BM. 1 Healing from a Q). And no freaking Jewel. Well, I'm going to melee my diamond edge then ...

It probably doesn't seem like much, but ?oArtifact Creation on my diamond edge gives:
[1] Slay Evil!!!!
[2] +4 Int!!!!!
[3] Activate for Double Resistance (not so important at this point, but appreciated none the less)
That makes this my 2nd best Artifact ever (Which tells you how crappy they usually are ... +4 Infravision is typical ;P)

Nice. I don't think I ever managed to get an android past about level 30. I struggled with the whole "killing stuff doesn't help your xp total" and couldn't quite wrap my brain around it. Plus, it really felt like some items had wacky high point scores, forcing you to use suboptimal gear to keep your level.

Magic Eaters are an awesomely versatile class.

On 18.7.2009 05:20 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Hey Elliott. I don't think this guy is going to finish at CL50 giving the way things are going. I should be powerful enough to beat the Serpent as things stands, so you should appreciate my CL48 attempt at victory! But your right. Things that don't make sense are Cambeleg vs Fingolfin, Thorin vs Yata-no-kagami, Crimson vs. My randart shooter (I'm actually shooting things!!!! Really!! I killed Wahha with bolts ... Yippeee!). Also, you might find Ringil with high hopes for high levels, only to be disappointed. Armour slots are most important, and things like BDSM and Soulkeeper put Ringil to shame as far as Construction Points go.

And as for the "killing stuff doesn't help xp", I totally agree. I find myself destructing things that don't give meaningful drops. Normally a pack of Nether or Mana Hounds is good news, but not for this guy. And for a Magic Eater, I prefer an Ethereal Dragon to say a Great Venom Wyrm.

Got the Jewel at last in a vault. Came with a -oRockets that blew up, and a _oHealing that blew up. Another 2 _oHealings, each charged to 9 netted 3 add'l charges each (so divide by 3 ... that means you only get 1 extra charge if you are conservative!). I seem to blow good stuff up at about 50% ... so I think I will just melee and shoot seeker bolts for the final battle. I have plenty of potions so its not a big deal.

I shot the Destroyer, swapping in Reflection for Gogo. He was quite tame at a distance.

Maybe 20 or so significant uniques to go before the final battle. I think I am ready ....

I tried to shoot the Unicorn, but no luck. Got her down to 5 stars easily. Then she goes summoning berserk. 1in1 to summon hordes for GWoP, or just Nodens if she is feel beneficent. I spent so much time handling her summons (teleport, separate, destruct) that she could just out regenerate me. 5 stars to 8 stars to 3 stars to 7 stars to 3 stars to 8 stars. I got bored, and decided I really need more than just 10 rockets if I am going to stand a chance. Also, the 19% fail on the ManaStorm is annoying.

So recall and enlighten. Look for rockets. No? Recall. Recall and enlighten. Look for rockets. No? Repeat. About 50 cycles so far with no luck, though quite a few _oHealing and _oManaStorm have shown up. -oDisintegrate is doing OK as well.

And what's that unidentified ring over there? Probably just the first ring of power, which would hardly trump my +3 attack ring. Nope, its Vilya, and while O'Parts has served me well all game, I'd rather put it down.

So here's a kit with no shooting ability (The Unicorn Experience (tm) completely demoralized me) and with mediocre melee, but, damnit, I will find -oRockets. I'm going to scum for at least 30 charges ...

Scummed -oRockets for a bit until I got 29 charges, at which point I hit a dry spell. So I offed Oberon quite easily. I toyed with the Unicorn a couple of times, but her first move each time was a double move to gain line of sight and then summon Nodens and greater angels. Blah. I'm +40 speed, though I think she is something like +55 speed.

Finally, I decided to take her out. I brought 5 !oRestore Mana and my 29 rocket charges. Actually, I used disintegrate quite a bit as I was always surrounded by her summons, it seems. The only scary point was when I let her get close when she was down to 2 stars, and I was down to 2 rockets but plenty of mana storm in reserve (29 charges). She summoned Nodens (what, the hundredth time? geez) and I only had 700hp. I teleported, knowing he would follow. He got his mandatory double move, the first being a psycho spear for 400hp or so and I'm thinking "Oh, boy!" But he summoned on his second move, so I destructed him yet again.

Finished of the Unicorn with my last 2 rockets and mana storms. Yay!!!

Nodens is too scary for me. His Mana Storm does something like 600hp and for some reason, he seems to get plenty of double moves. I could take him, but then again, he could take me ;-)

On 19.7.2009 00:12 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Um ... duh. The proper move when surrounded by Unicorn, Nodens and plenty of Angels is to teleport Nodens away rather than to teleport. The Unicorn seldom dishes out 700hp in a single turn, while Nodens routinely does so. I'm lucky to have survived that ...

I built up to handle the Unicorn, and then the Serpent was *much* easier. At least, he wasn't summoning Nodens or GWoP all the time. Just plenty of Cyberdemons and the few low level uniques I left around. And of course, his good 'ol buddy, Morgy. And the Plain Gold Ring. I steered way clear of these last two guys. I would have killed Morgy after the fact if he was still around but he wasn't. Again, I fear the Mana Storm ...

Rockets are awesome! I never meleed at all during the final battle, and when you have 54 !oRestore Mana, you really have as many rockets as you could ever want. Each potion gave back 10 charges, so I drank them 3 at a time. Mmmmmm ... tasty goodness!
