I started this character just for kicks, after browsing through the assorted Priest dumps for ToME.

Then, at Barrow Downs 2, Princess Quest for 12 Black Orcs, I get Sting as a reward. I've *NEVER* even seen Sting before in a game. It's just not fair.... but it's also got me thinking maybe I'll try to play this gal through.

Is it a sign from on high? Time will tell :-)

Whew! Very nearly died in this last God quest, but being a Priest, this char HAS to make it through them! There were Undead masses breeding everywhere, and I was about to give up, when I decided to go up a side tunnel to rest up in a room, and there, lo and behold....

Due to me being unlucky with staves, I have lots of troubles dealing enough damage to kill levelled Greater Balrogs, let alone Sauron himself (actually, I killed him once, but that was pure luck).

Hope that helps.

Thanks Remuz! Well, I went and tried on that Mage Staff +10. I've got mana enough (well, never enough, but all I've had so far is 795 sp). Dropping Aranruth for the Staff loses me 98 hitpoints, down to 552 (!), but OTOH it boosts Manathrust from 48d19 (at CL49) to 58d23. What a decision!!!

I presume that later on I'll find something(s) to help make up for the lost hitpoints. I'll play test the Staff on Mordor 54 and see how it goes. Hopefully it won't get me killed...

Rag gives you r_blind and some mana, but anyway you have full esp and lots of mana, when Trone gives speed, reflection, more hp due to CON bonus, imm_fire allowing for better cloak like Luthien, INT increase = more mana.

Illusory Castle doesn't have many interesting things in... maybe some dungeon towns and that's all (unless you like wandering blindly in the middle of screen full of walls). Erebor - it always is nice exp and eq boost, but do you really need it? You already HAVE THE POWER :-) (I want that cesti! I want that cesti! and boots! I have never even seen them in my games)
The Crypt shouldn't be much problem (unless someone like Gothmog shows up) - if you feel confident, go there. Else go kill some great wyrms or something ;-)

Trone... ya think? I do miss reflection... I'd lose rblind, not sure what else (and am too tired tonight to do the numbers) but it's definitely worth a shot, especially if you say so, ZV :)

Done with the Crypt... that was... interesting, but really not a challenge. There were one or two points where I wondered which would hold out, my Manathrusts/Mindwaves (esp. w/ the backlash) or the assorted vampires, but it all worked out quite handily, and the biggest problem I had was figuring what to carry out with me. In the end, I left a lot of cool, unusable weapons behind in order to salvage the Restore Mana, etc, potions I'd brought in with me.

I guess I'll sleep on it all (a lot) and probably go punting around in Erebor after this to get more eq/potions. The Mouth of Sauron went down FAST, so I'm not sure what the other Angband baddies are going to be like; so far no major troubles, but this is my first time down Angband so I have a *very healthy* respect for them....

I finally beat that top-level Angband FF quest for 15 Nycadaemons. Small levels made it tough... A Wand of Fireflash of Plenty was the answer. Combined with Lay of Protection to prevent summoning, it softened'em up enough that I could take them out with Manathrust in fairly short order. No fun having a bunch bear down on you all at once, though! (I did a cmovie of this; if anyone asks, I'll post it.)

Done with Erebor... but the best thing I found in there was a Mage Staff of Power (+11)....

I went back into Erebor to get more healing/etc potions. It worked out quite well, though my trip got cut short by something very stupid: I tripped a trap of silent switching and wound up wearing Dwar's ring AND Marda's coat. All better now, though, plus I copied Remove Curses onto Toros Meijistos, so that won't happen to me again.

I really don't know how many potions I should really stockpile (current pile is at Bree), any suggestions? Does that look like enough? Am I ready for the full plunge into Angband? I've been looking for Rod Tip of Home Summoning (or whatever it's called) but I guess I'm not deep enough for it yet.

I would personally find a nice rod to attach that Rod of Disarming to before you go down (well, unless of course you have a good enough spell for it, it's been a while since I've played a spellcaster...)

Looks like a winner, though.

like Xandor said, rod of disarming would be useful even with excellent disarming - you don't want a situation when the only trap that went off instead of being disarmed was a trap of drop everything when some Great Wyrms are coming. This moonstone rod looks good enough with all the powers of the Istari.

those potions.... it's almost enough for the Void, not to mention Angband. Go for it!

Your stockpile of potions is about 5 times as big as my stockpiles before I face Melkor in the Void. Potions are not an issue for you.

On the other hand, you seem to be lacking a lot of Rods. With your current equipment, you'll definitely need to try to find Rod Tips of: Healing, Speed, and Home Summoning.

I typically go for about 4 Rods of Healing, on Silver or better Istari Rods. Moonstone isn't really good enough for anything except Disarm, IMO.

BTW, are you using the automizer? I find using that to destroy all useless Rods enormously time-efficient.

I typically tend to hate wands and Staves (except for Staff of Wish and Staff of Mana). Is there a reason you have 15 wands stashed away?

Thank you, everyone, for comments -- I need them, and more!

I'm using the automatizer, but I'm not very fluent with it. Still, I'm nuking the dumb rods and rod tips by name. I've had rotten luck finding Istari Rods :( And I've not seen Rod Tips of Healing yet. (I do have the junkart, though.) Do I really need a Speed rod? Haven't seen those tips yet either.

I suppose I'll use the Moonstone rod on Disarm. So far I've had very few troubles with disarming, but I don't know if that'll change deeper into Angband.

I'm about ready to leave the Arkenstone at home, as I need the kit space and the Anchor is hugely useful. I'll miss the extra luck, though I'm not sure where the +3 loss puts me at.

15 wands: No particular reason ;-) I'm not keen on wands myself, but I haven't used them in ToME much, so I thought I'd give them a try. Stone Prison and Fireflash *are* very nice, when I remember to use them... but I rarely use/need them. I just lost my Fireflash of Plenty wand to a recharging incident, meh.

I would dearly love to get ImmCold into my kit somehow. Those Great Ice Wyrms can be irritating, even if they're easy to kill.

And if anyone's got ideas for those skill points burning a hole in my pocket.... ;-) I intend to max Mindcraft, just hoping for some help from FF there in Angband (maybe), and certainly more into Spirituality.... but how many points into that, I'm not sure, nor where else I should spend them all.

Celebrimbor and the Ring of Precognition (neither of which I've seen before) in one go, from Paths of the Dead 69. Wahoo!

Celebrimbor is nifty, but the ring of Precognition... Congradulations. That's a game changing find. I've had exactly one character find it and get a chance to use it and it was quite something. The game basically became a scavenger hunt.

Finding out that Cubragol, for example, was *somewhere* on the level completely changes your approach. Instead of making a beeline for the quest monters and dodging the orc pit, I found myself heading TO the orc pit because that's where the interesting item was most likely to be.

That ring was pretty much responsible for that character's death. On level 72 of Erebore, I found out that there was a suit of PDSM somewhere. It was in the middle of an awful greater vault and I killed the character trying to get the armor. If I hadn't know it was there, I would have given up long before and moved on.
