Dunno how far I'll go with that character... never played ToME before, no idea what to do in this game.

So I've made the starting potion of Detonations, killed a young dragon in the mountains and instantly leveled to 23. Pumped Alchemy and Prayer to get basic money-making abilities and manathrust/divination spells. Completed the thieves and Maggot quests, dove to bottom Barrow Downs.

No idea what to do next. The merton and wight quests seem too dangerous to undertake at this point. Can't kill much with 10 or so castings of manathrust. And it's a PitA to play with 4 str! Not mentioning the 49 hps at level 23...

On 21.5.2014 12:55 Estie wrote:
The basic Eru offense is casting manathrust from mana school. You get access to that if you increase prayer. Wielding a mage staff speeds up the casting, they sometimes appear in the black market.

Spoiler:
While in the black market (or any store) you can use 'Z' to steal items, with risk of getting temporarily kicked out. :D

Also, you want to adjust your tactics and exploration modes on the character screen (press 'C)' by using 'E' or 'e' AND 'T' or 't'.

Restarted, because I was not sure about only skilling Prayer. This time, with the help of Thorondor, my first kill was a *mature* dragon, instantly leveling to 26. Trying to balance Prayer (Manathrust + Divination spells) and Magic Device (Noxious Cloud should do quite a lot of damage at this point), while keeping 70 skill points for Artifact Creation.

Maybe I'll continue to play a bit...

The first princess at 150ft BD got rescued and asked me to pick up between a helm, a useless trap kit and a (probably) useless weapon. I chose the helm and got a helm of seeing... with ESP. Should make things easier...

Didn't know you could get artifacts from the black market...

You can get them in basic shops, as well.

If you keep alchemy and prayer maxed, and put ~10 points into device, you should have enough for artifact creation when the time comes.

Finished the Orc Caves and the Old Forest. Had to improve Prayer to 30 to get a better manathrust (and clairvoyance as well). I'm starting to get good equipment now, just need to figure out what to do next...

On 26.5.2014 20:29 Estie wrote:
The god quests reward you with +prayer. There are up to 5, you should have the first by now. The temples can be dangerous with their levelled monsters, but typically fighting can be avoided - get in, enlighten the level, see if the artifact is there (a purple ~), leave if it isnt or go grab it if it is. The maximum amount of levels to search is 5, if it hasnt been created before it will be guaranteed on the 5th.

Otherwise, the best dungeon for low hit point casters is the sandworm lair, southwest of Bree. Beware the traps and the queen on level 30. Things like ego mage staves and stat potions can be found there, with relatively low risk to life and limb.

Also, when travelling overland, avoid deep water squares as the ambushes on them are deadly. Scrolls of teleport can be a saviour if you ever get ambushed (but usually arent).

I've done the Maze to get rid of the lost hobbit quest, and I guess the Sandworm Lair is next. Dunno about god quests, didn't get any yet (probably because I use clairvoyance a lot... maybe I need to increase my piety first).

God quests have a chance to be given every time you level up. The chance is diminished if you level up multiple levels at once, like the alchemist typically does with the detonatins potion, so sometimes you wont get any.
This is a drawback of fast levlelling, as you can lose out on skillpoints, but dont worry about it. Piety has no effect afaik.

On 27.5.2014 16:49 Estie wrote:
Btw, awesome job killing the Minotaur with that character. He is fast and hits hard, 72 hp isnt much of a buffer. If you need more storing space, the other easy house quest is in Lothlorien; Gondolin and Minas Anor can be tough.

On 27.5.2014 20:14 PowerWyrm wrote:
The Gondolin quest was not that hard, neither was the Minotaur... I presume invisibility is bugged in this version, and 99% of the monsters will just wander around doing nothing, unless in melee range. I've also killed the Sandworm Queen as soon as I saw that her poison breath was doing 25-35 damage instead of the 300 that she does in TomeNET...

On 27.5.2014 23:15 Estie wrote:
Ah you have TomeNet experience ? That explains why you are doing so well when you never played tome before :P
Anyway, 300 sounds about right unresisted for the Sandworm Queen.
Gondolin quest is much like vanilla Kavlax, pushover most of the time but with unlucky roll, quick death. There is a chance for those dragons spawning as ancient ones and you can see AMHD in there. I count it as the most dangerous house quests (of the basic 4), and usually do it last.

Invisibility has a chance to basically make everythings movement erratic. The chance depends on the power of your invisibility (a hidden number) and the monster level. Invisibility sources stack; most are small, but the actual Ring of Invisibility is pretty strong iirc. It is possible that your artifact ring is based on a = of invisibility, in which case he should have the strong version.

Man that spider quest in Lothlorien was a PitA... Had to make a buttload of potions of heroism and berserk strength to always stay above 100 hps and survive those curses from the araneas. In fact... the elder araneas are way less dangerous than the normal ones! Good to have the recipe for !aug now ;)

On a side note, killing those spiders leveled me to 29 and Eru decided to show up for a little temple quest. Five free Prayer skill points...

I guess it's time to continue the main quest and take on Mirkwood. I hope to get more goodies from the princesses...

On 29.5.2014 02:36 PowerWyrm wrote:
Those quest rewards seem tailored for an alchemist... !aug, magi lamp, elven DSM. Got me some nice magi lamp/cloak (just need the crown now) and elven boots. Eru gave me a second relic quest at 31, so Prayer got pumped to 35.

I'm almost done with the town quests (seems to miss a reward there, unless it was some athelas). I'll probably do the mid dungeons after (Helcaraxe, Rhun...) before starting Mordor.

Three more levels before Artifact Creation. Time to work on my WIS...

I guess it pays to have high stealth. I was able to sneak past the drujs to retrieve a nice randart mage staff (with immunity to cold! sounds too lucky to be anything other than a guaranteed item). Time to sneak by more drujs and try to reach the down stairs.

I've now done all dungeons up to Rhun and all midlevel quests except the Haunted House in Minas. Scrols of *Id* have 1 magic essence each. Doing the rounds through the 4 towns, with the occasional "rest for the night" at the inn to restock shops, gets 40 fairly quickly.
If you plan on making another artifact with +% life, you might also want essences of extra life which are contained in scrolls of *remove curse* and can be acquired at the same time (I didnt make a 2nd artifact with my competition alchemist).

Then you won't have to redo them every time you get a new skill. For some reason that I have never figured out, at some times the entire list of magic skills gets resorted, which is a pain.

You can easily change all your existing macros by just just opening up the appropriate .prf file in a text editor (they are in /lib/user and probably saved with your character's name unless you explicitly did something different). Go to the bottom of the file and work up. Old macros don't have to be changed.

So the silyl staff has been made...

The randart staff creation engine is clearly bugged: +mana and +spell don't cost anything which allows to increase the pval indefinitely (well I decided to stop at 225 because I have no idea what would happen at 256 if it's coded on a byte). I just added some high resists I was missing to complete staff creation.

On a side note, the princess quest at Mordor dlvl57 was to kill some demiliches which promptly dropped the amazing ring of Flare and a buttload of tomes (I picked up mana/mind/Eru). Convenient...

Mordor is done, as are the Eru quests. Time for Paths of the Dead.

Yes as it is, if you increase pval of the base ego item without having added anything with pval of your own, there is no cost. It should require at least xp to raise.

256 is no barrier, the first one you would encounter would be 32k mana, if you go higher it flips into negative numbers. I dont think that youre in danger.

Have fun with the stupidly op staff :)

Only the last two dungeons remaining...

I was wondering how the hell I was supposed to find the One Ring (would that be a random drop?) when there was only 3 dungeons remaining... but Glaurung dropped it at the bottom of Erebor. Silyl dragon...

Congrats :) From the comments here it looks like you enjoyed the run, at least the part prior to the op staff.
The endgame in ToME can get long and grindy if you get unlucky, which is part of the reason why I dont mind the "op" staff that much as it speeds it up considerably.
