I'll try sexy a bit, but I don't expect this character to go far. At the moment, I constantly have to retreat and abandon levels due to rats and worms breeding out of control. Plus, I can't really fight at the moment, so once my mana runs out, I need to run out. Out of the way of danger, that is. Fortunately, the warg quest does not fail if you retreat. I am on my 3rd go with only 1 warg remaining. After that, I think I will buy a _TreasureDetection and use stone to mud to get 30 or teleport scrolls. Also, I will keep the levels large so that teleport has a chance of landing me someplace safe. Then, I will go for the DL6 quest!

I got almost 3k on DL5 after finishing up the wargs. Any magma just received a stone to mud ... Then, back to town to get resources. After 8 days, I eventually got a staff of treasure location. Its a good idea for a high mage like me to have a crossbow, so, as luck would have it, I scored one of velocity! Wow! Took all my gold, though, so I was heading back to the yeek cave entrance for one more quick round of treasure when I was assaulted by Lion Heart. I blasted him down with frost bolts and regular bolts, when he dropped seeker bolts! Geez, maybe now I *can* kill those early quest monsters :)

OK, really, now I am ready to enter the Pits of Angband. Really! With _Treasure and stone to mud, I could generate 1k of gold per minute. I only did 5 more minutes of that, and then bought out all the interesting supplies I could.
In the interest of completeness, I decided to kill Maggot and hope for a good drop. So, I rested 2.5 days in the town (Better to rest longer than too short), and proceeded to massacre several hundred townsfolk before finding the farmer. In the end, he dropped a trump weapon, which is about the best I could really hope for. Free Action! Yay! Waltzing back to sell off my potions, I stopped in the BM and saw: Ring of See Invisible! Yay! Now all I need is resist lightning ;)
DL6 and 12 quests coming up!
On 14.9.2009 20:20 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL27:Tower] 01:34:56
DL6 quest was Mauhur, who obliged me with some Genji gloves. I recalled back to sell the loot, one of which was an unidentified !Dex that one of his orc buddies must have dropped! Oy! But the armory had some armor of resist lightning, so I had everything I needed for the Tower. Everything except power, that is ;) I used the Sewer to level to CL21, getting a couple unwelcome wisdom boosts. I then skipped the Logrus Q, and took a look at the Vault. Dave, I don't know how you do it! I had a pack of Leng Spiders gearing up to cause hallucinations, and the standard staple of medium power mobs. I decided not even to try, and ducked into the Tower to lick my wounds. I landed next to a clear worm mass, and light up revealed a magma intrusion. Now that's not my favorite form of wall, but I'll take it. 400 intrusions later and here I am!
On 14.9.2009 20:39 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL31:Tower] 01:46:20
20 days of shop scumming for basic resistance armor was a waste. I only got teased by 3 specatular rand-arts that I could not afford :( I decided I better hop back in the tower and find a quartz vein fast before the RNG changes its mood. Instead, I found a granite wall, which is my favorite wall for leveling up. 450 walls later, and here I am!
Now, I'll look for a quartz vein.
On 14.9.2009 21:37 Djabanete wrote: Haha, what a scummy character! Just reading your comments is making me fall asleep :D
The worst is when you lose a character stupidly after scumming hard. Hopefully that doesn't happen!
On 14.9.2009 22:07 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Well, in the case of Monks, I just skipped the Vault outright ;-) Mage-types are definitely harder to work with, because of their low HP and low damage output (because I often need to wade through a few orcs/whatever to get to the potential Stings). Typically, I run in with about 300 HP; with a Mage you're going to struggle to get above 200 HP at clvl 20. Another thing that helps, if you see fairly difficult monsters, is to read the ?oWoR as soon as you get in.
The other thing you have to ask yourself when building a character is, "How does Sexy help my character?" Will a Sexy Swimsuit (or an artifacted Swimsuit) be better than my best armor? Are the +1 to all stats better than Mighty, Combat, Nimble, and Fearless? Does Whip proficiency help in the early game?
Often for me, I like to play characters that need 4 high stats, such as Paladin/Rangers/Magic-Eaters/Priests (STR/DEX/CON and a casting stat). For those Sexy provides the best balanced stat boost. In the case of the Monk and Forcetrainers, this was even more helpful because the basic unarmed damage sucks from clvl 1 to 12, so 3 blows with a Whip is helpful.
Hahaha... Djabanete, I outdid Chris on the scumming with my latest character, accumulating 500k gold from the Quartz veins before finally finishing the Tower quest. Whereupon I spent 50 game days looking for gear.

Scummy, indeed!! But, I am a Nature High Mage, and while it is possible to proceed without scumming, I don't have the patience for that today! I think the scumming is over now, so you can safely remove that "Eeeeewwwwww!" expression :)
For some reason, I thought this Telepathy helm had esp dragons ... but it doesn't! I nearly died in an ambush realizing that mistake. So, I'm too weak for the top of the lair (without ESP, and with aggravate). But during my brief stay, I did off one of the judges (fear?) who obliged with Durin.
I'm too weak for the Cloning Pits as well, so I guess I better go hang out in Angband for a bit. Base con of 18/70 has me bummin' ...

This character is way too weak for the Cloning Pits, isn't she? Isn't she? Well, just 1 Gachapin remains and then it is the queens and fasolts. So, I'm almost done. I'm just puzzled how I am doing it ...
On 15.9.2009 00:32 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL34:Cloning Pits] 04:59:55
Completed in under 5 hours! Yay!
I went in with 3 attacks for 160 damage. No poison resistance other than from my spell. I took *all* my supplies, or at least all I could carry without encumbrance. No healing required.
Now getting a foothold was tough, as I had 4 dungeon cleaners and all the Grendels above, all 3 Its and all 3 Bokrugs plus a Jurt to handle at once. That's tough! Liberal teleport other and line of sight control using the forest allowed me eventually to clear an itty bitty corner of the quest. Really, that was the hard part. I scored Boromir and Hammerhand in the process, so my melee was up to 184 per round (not counting berserk). ESP was needed for what followed, so Hammerhand was a swap item. Basically, I used Dave's "Detection Range Pulling", I think he calls it. You can reach out and lure a single monster to you at a time, from as far as your telepathic range extends, which is quite far. So, the dagons and the gachapins all died this way. I was surprised how easily the dagons died. I remember them being tougher :) The gachapins went hydra happy, of course, but nothing I could not handle. The rest was routine.
Only notable items: Boromir, Hammerhand and Isildur. So now I am quite encumbered, but I have a very high AC (I started with like 90 base, 140 with Stone Skin. Now I am 199AC with Stone Skin, unless I berserk).
Here is my after pose! I'm roaring with mage melee power!
So what to do now?
On 15.9.2009 02:57 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL38:DL60] 06:49:18
I'm not sure how long I can go with crappy Con. I've had 6 boosts and I'm only at 18/39 base (something some characters get to in only 2 boosts, sometimes by CL4!). So, Str and Con are screwed. So is life rating. Int is base 18/100. And I've scummed 200+ days for New Life. I think it is time to conquer the mountain, and I better do so before CL40 as that is probably the only con boost I'll have until CL50. Its not like con is the single most important stat for a melee mage ... sigh.
Good News. Telepathy at last. And, why not get two sources at the same time? I'll stick with Hammerhand for the time being, as my con is so darn sucky. Did I mention that ;)
On 15.9.2009 04:16 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL38:DL40] 07:56:20
I'm sorry, my initial Life Rating was 104%. I conquered the mountain and got 92% life rating, screwed on Str,Int,Con again. Sigh. So, I put my blinders on, and start recalling down to CL40 of Angband. Cast Sunlight. Any stat potions? Any New Life? No? Recall back. Repeat. Basically the same strategy one uses to get wands of rockets. Eventually, I scored a New Life and got 95% life, but 18/130 strength and 18/110 con (18/100 int). This will have to due. Life rating is not that important for a mage. Base con is far more meaningful.
I'm in a groove now. Continue. 1 !Con. +70hp. Continue. Another !Con. +50hp. OK. Things are looking up now. I was heading for CL50 with only 600hp before all these shenanigans ... Now, I should be able to pick con for CL40 and do OK.
Back to the Lair, I think ...

I was constantly getting owned by blindness. Seems like every high level dragon can easily keep me blinded and unable to cast spells. Indra should help with that ...
On 15.9.2009 20:18 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL47:DL72] 12:49:10
That's better. An Ice Wyrm finally dropped a ring of speed +8 allowing me to wear the harness full time.
Tiamat was tough. With me running at +20 speed at the time, she still scored 4 double breaths early on, each combo was life threatening! Plus, she was hard to kill as I am not quite deadly enough, it seems, and she would just run away in fear when at 1 star. Finally, on like the 5th go round, I got her. Nothing of note in the remains, except maybe Incanus but that hardly interests me at the moment.
On finding Tulkas, I decided I was somewhat used to playing slow and that I'd rather have the stat boosts, especially now with Tiamat out of the way. I think I'll just hang out down here and level up to CL50 while keeping a look out for Crimson.
On 16.9.2009 03:49 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL50:DL72] 14:37:16
Pretty fast to CL50 for a high mage ... at least for me. At any rate, I have everything I need except speed. I'm still running at base speed of +6. Against the Yamata-no-Orochi, this nearly proved fatal. He got 2 double breaths against me and I think could have killed me had he just chosen the correct 2 to use (disenchantment?). As it stood, going from full hp down to 116 hp in a single move (from my perspective) is scary!
I'm clearing a lightning dragon pit at the moment. What could I use? Oh, any sort of decent shield (Thorin), a good weapon (Hurin is awesome with the +3 attacks and +3 con, but it still is just a 2d6 weapon with crappy plusses and crappy slays). Also, something with poison and shards 'cause I can't wear this Lordly Protection forever. We'll see ... I think the melee mage needs to be very patient.
0% 500hp healing is super sweet. In fact, I can drop my Int all the way down to 18/140 and still have 0% fail, though I wouldn't want to play that way. The point is that I think I could swap out Indra if something better came along.
On 16.9.2009 05:51 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Herbal Healing is awesome if you can manage to get it to or near 0% Fail. Usually this means clvl 50, INT 18/220, and Neutral alignment, but it's much easier to get with a High-Mage! The hard part is offense.. I see you're going the melee route, but how is Nature's Wrath (the final spell?)
The spoilers say it does clvl * 4 damage to monsters in sight, plus (100+clvl)*2 disintegrate ball centered on you.. so adjacent monsters take 350 damage at clvl 50. That actually sounds decent, although the disintegrate (radius 4) effect must be pretty annoying.
On 16.9.2009 16:49 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: [CL50:DL72] 15:34:52
I've played quite a few Spectre Nature High Mages. Now there's a combo! Passwall and Wall of Stone. Except that with the racial melee biff and their puny size, they really suck at melee! Unless you luck into some great finds, then you are forced into relying on Nature for offense. Actually, with a wizardstaff, its not bad. You can even kill Sky Drakes with Whirlpool if you are patient. But passwall is the key ... I seem to recall though, that Natures Wrath is not good enough for the end game. While I could easily kill the Destroyer, Sauron was completely beyond me! I fought him for almost 2 hours (he was a quest monster) and eventually committed suicide in frustration!
So, with the Barbarian, I lose passwall, but gain respectable melee. With the berserk intrinsic (which I always post with but never seem to use), you have access to a little extra kick if needed.
The other thing about Natures Wrath that is annoying is that you often kill a monster with the first effect, and the disintegration ball still triggers, destroying all the loot. I've lost wanted corpses that way ...
So, with melee and Hurin, I'm actually quite powerful for a melee mage in Hengband. I really need to gain about 20 points of speed though. Even the Jewel and Crimson remain elusive ...
This is a really hard build to win with. As you say, offense is key. My proudest moment so far is killing Banor=Rupart, and that level of uniques is really tough for me. Biketal, Jisisl, Demogorgon are all probably too much given my low base speed.
So I need to wait ... and wait ... and wait ...

And when I finally managed to kill Y'golonoc (5th attempt), he dropped Crimson. That leaves the Jewel and Thorin on my wish list!
The Destroyer is down. That was tight. I only had 844hp (no berserk, of course) and had to worry about his crushing melee. Run thru my piddly spell points healing, teleport him away, eat magic to regain spell points, repeat. That's right, freakin' slay demon. Nothing else. And the sad thing is, that is pretty typical for me. This character made 5 arts, and 2 were good, but only relatively so. Second go I panicked thinking I forgot my stash of !Resistance ... Back in town my home had no such stash. I had a few fumbling keystrokes earlier ... Did I fat finger it? No. Calm down. You are a Nature High Mage and can cast the spell. Third go was the normal shaky start where he goes summoning nuts. I would get 2-3 rounds of melee before having my magic dispelled, my walls disintegrated, and surrounded by scary summons while being pummeled down to 400hp. For a while, I thought about calling this go off as well, as I was thinking 50 ?Teleport would not be enough. But things then settled down, and I found my groove. Berserk was used heavily until I need to heal or had my magic dispelled. Then I would fight toe to toe casting Herbal Healing every other turn or so. When I ran out of mana, or when he summoned cyberdemons/morgoth/ancient dragons, I read a teleport to lick my wounds. I generally ignored his dispel magic and kept on fighting anyway ... He died quickly this way.

Yeah, the Serpent dispelled and I lost haste (41->31 speed, no big deal), stoneskin (217->167 AC, no big deal), double resistance.
