Its been a good run so far. DL6 Q gave Grimtooth, and DL12, Farmer's Sickle. Sold for gold, and bought armor of elvenkind without needing to scum. At 27lbs, its not my first choice in armor, but it will have to do.

Quick finds of Thengel, Demonthoughts, and then a rand-art 'Lion in Flame' from robin hood gave yet more gold, and I did the town circuit to pick up "Intelligence and a shield of Night and Day. Still no FA or SI, which is what I really need.

I'll give it until 2 hours to find FA and SI in game, and then I'll resort to town scumming. With no detection, I'm liable to fall prey to FA insta-death again, and a ghast nearly got me this time.

Cleared a very early troll pit, which is rather tough without detection. Plus, those darn Troll Priests kept cursing my stuff. Recall back, pay the 1500gp to teleport to all the towns. Rest for the night and repeat. But this time I picked up boots of free action and an amazing wand of dragon's flame. Poor Rich the Thief ... He never stood a chance even though I couldn't see him coming. It did cost me my lone !Speed, but it was worth it.

Next stop: DL30.

Farmer dropped a nice weapon of *Slay Evil*, saving me from the necessity of making a mad suicidal dash for Sting, and its lovely +2 con, FA, SI. But I went anyway, staff of speed in hand. With heroic stealth, +10 haste, and a ready wand of teleport other, I was able to procure the desired small sword. An annoying bat and a pack of air hounds were all that were awake, and I managed the sword in the second chamber!

To continue my suicidal run, I skimmed the top of the Anti-melee cave. When I spotted Gachapin, I risked it, despite a mere 229hp, lack of poison and chaos resistance, and no curing. Heck, he breathes toxic waste for what, 500? So if he breathed I was dead. If he summoned hydras, I was dead! But my dragon flame took him down, and the booty was Anarion.

Having found the Phial in the Vault, I decided to run the early quests and arena for the 2 ?Acq. Also did a forgotten DQI which netted a !Con (18/31->18/39 suggests an 18/70 or 80 base ...) as well as a Reinforce Muscle +3 ring. Very nice. Mimic's quest and Tengu quest had nothing to offer. 2 ?Acq read at DL60 of the lair gave a weapon of burning and Kusanagi. I like the last, but prefer Sting for the time being.

Selling loot, and teleporting around to all the towns again netted a ring of con +3, and dwarven armor with +1 con. 350 hp, thanks to a +9 con boost, should be enough for DL30.

Well, that's it for the quick level advancement, I fear. Its been a good start so far. I found a granite wall in the dungeon, and farmed it for 400+ kills, putting me almost at CL32 with a mere 16k xp to go. Unfortunately, it took 20 minutes to get that xp. So, 70k xp to next level is probably about 1.5 hours away. I'll try to patient it out ... I recall down to explore a level at 6:00am every morning, but I'm seldom back before dark to the town. Mages play that slow wrt in game time. Then, I teleport around the towns looking for something to buy. Rest the night, teleport around the towns, and recall back for another level of exploration. Each level nets maybe 10k xp if I am lucky.

What I will probably end up doing is skimming the Anti-melee cave, but I'm not that desperate yet. Plus, I'm a bit nervous with no detection. Maybe I could explore a bit, using liberal *destruction*, but I'll hang out here a bit hoping to luck into Thranduil. Eventually, the towns will stock telepathy if all else fails.

OK, this is working nicely. ESP Evil is a godsend, and without it, I'd be at a loss to hang at the top of the Antimagic cave. I've toggled between lack of confusion resistance, lack of nexus resistance, or lack of both! But now, paranoia has driven me back to my trusty trump weapon. I just snagged one of those 5 square awesome "vaults" with way out of depth monsters, and 5 excellent items. The take was another high level book, Hithlomir and a cloak of the bat.

1 hour of play netted 100k xp, so this will do for the time being.

Well, I think I finally caught a good break. A little 'd' pit which I am about 60% thru just gave a -Dragon's Breath. So, while I have killed Itangast and a lone Storm Wyrm at the top of the lair, I was just barely able to do so without getting killed, and even so, I still needed to teleport to regen spell points. With the Dragon's Breath and Dragon's Flame, I can do 2000hp from my wands, and I can probably handle another 1500hp with my spells, which should be enough for Storm Wyrms and Ice Wyrms. The only major obstacle is my sole _Speed got fried by a Revenant.

Itangast gave me my book, which is why I braved the lair in the first place. At CL36, I now have a magic rocket, though the fail rate is too high to use reliably. With the high cost, I can probably only do 1000hp damage with rockets right now.

For Chaos High Mages, its really a grind until CL40 and the mana storm, and then, super power begins.

Only 2 stat potions so far at stat potion depth, and they were Wis and Dex. I have an 18/130 Int, but only an 18/80 Con. I think a hobbit needs the high intelligence, though ...

Ah! That speeds things up. At first, I could kill 3 dragon's during the span of 1 game day. Then, I would sell a couple spellbooks and do the town circuit. Since I was burning !Speed, I really needed to get some staves or risk being shut down on my recently embarked dragon slaughter endeavor. The BM obliged with a ring of con +5, 3 staves of speed, an additional 10 !speed and a _Holiness. Now, I have a good "One and Done" kit in place, and can focus on Storm and Ice wyrms. I'm burning potions of resist cold for the latter, but I really hate swapping out my con rings to activate double resistance. Though, with Holiness, maybe its time to conserve ...

Still, no great finds. But the quick experience is nice.

On 17.3.2010 23:55 chris wrote:
[CL40:DL60] 07:14
OK ... I pushed to CL40 just so I could choose to boost my Int. I'm still 7% fail on the magic rocket, even with a Wizardstaff and Wizardry (do they stack?). That's too high to get my 4th book. The rocket costs 25sp and does about 200hp. But Hell Wyrms have 5400hp. So I will need 10 !RestoreMana (or lots of Eat Magic) together with a 0% rocket to pull it off. I don't quite have the resources yet ...

But hobbits level quickly. So, I'll hang out here for another level or so, then do the Cloning Pits.

The BM stocked a Disintegrate. To have 4 high caliber magic items by game day 30 is insane. I've had characters town scum 400-500 days to find as much!

Master Mystic and AMHD by the queens ... nuff said. Plus, I got instantly moronified, so I could no longer cast magic rocket (19% fail). That stupid mystic healed too often, summoned too many phase spiders and such and was unaffected by my logrus and chaos attacks. Well, I guess I need to build a lot more power before the Chaos Node quest ...

Well, that's enough play for today. I'll post on a positive note:

[1] GCV at DL60. Lots of baddies, and I couldn't get far into the vault as a stupid Dracolisk (no teleport) was blocking one side, and I forget what else the other. Since I lack Nexus resistance, I destructed the Dracolisk, along with most of the vault. But there was a pair of gloves (Cammithrin ... not Cambeleg) and metal shod boots (Jumping ... not Thror) that I wanted to check out. I missed a cloak when scanning, and it turned out to be the best of all: Jack of Shadows!

[2] Next trip down ... The Palantir. 2 ESP items back to back. Sweet. But I want Laputa now, especially after missing Shiva's boots.

[3] Next trip down ... Beruthiel. OK, it sucks, and I would never wear it. But after waiting so long for telepathy, I find it odd to get 3 items back to back to back :D

So, Legendary [10] stealth and a 4% fail rocket. Next level, I'm going for the book, 1% fail rate be damned!

Nice going--always hard to play an offensive caster with low HP, and no innate detection ability. Is Magic Rocket pretty viable? It never seemed to have good mana economy, but then again I've never really used the chaos realm much...

Btw, do you have a windows archive of 1.7.2 I could get? I can't find it anywhere, and the differences from 1.7.0 are really intriguing!

Wow, that competition came out when I disappeared for a few months, so I missed it. I'm on linux these days anyway, so I couldn't have helped. But, if you ever want to get the latest hengband source and compile yourself, you can do an "svn checkout http://svn.sourceforge.jp/svnroot/hengband/Hengband/trunk". You will then need to compile yourself, though ...

Magic Rocket is pretty good for a high mage, but not so good for a regular mage. Available at CL36 it does almost 200hp damage per round for a cost of 33sp (or 25sp if you use a wizardstaff). The fail rate is high, so it won't become reliable until CL40 or so, maybe earlier if you can max out your int. For a regular mage though, the spell doesn't become available until CL40 and probably won't be usable until CL45, which makes leveling up very difficult.

So, for me, 376sp means 15 casts, or 3000hp damage potential. Coupled with magic items like Dragon's Flame (5 x 210hp), Dragon's Breath (5 x ~200hp), Disintegrate (4 x ~240hp) and Holiness (5 x 150hp), I can dish it out. Bile Wyrms and below are easily tamed! I can probably risk Hell and Venom wyrms now as well.

But the big money comes with the Mana Storm, available at CL40 for a high mage with, I seem to recall, a 14% fail rate provided you have an 18/*** Int. I'm 12% higher on fail rates than I should be since I can't seem to find any stupid stat potions :P

And of course, damage from a distance is really nice. Monsters often waste turns moving towards you. Generally, a dragon might breathe once. Perhaps twice, but often not at all. They don't even reach me before dying!

On 18.3.2010 23:13 chris wrote:
And if you want to do a Chaos HM, I highly recommend a Mindflayer. You will be telepathic as soon as you stumble upon a Granite Wall, which really helps compensate for the lack of detection. +4 base Int adds 20% bonus to spellpoints, and they have SI as well. -2 con kind of sucks, so I can't see playing any personality except patient ...

Pretty smooth quest. Bring plenty of resist heat and magic to eat. !RestoreMana as a last resort, so I didn't need to use any. No healing required either.

I'm getting frustrated by the lack of stat potions. Only 2 found at stat potion depth in about 7 hours of play (Wis and Dex). Of course, big dragons don't drop potions, but I'm still killing smaller dragons whenever I see them. Probably, I will now go for Indra so that I can cast my spells, and then just play with out resistances ...

OK, stat potions started showing up at last, including a couple of Int. I'm down to 0% fail on my mana storm, but my hp are too low for comfort. At the moment, I hunt a bunch of GWoLaw and Balance that got summoned by some more of their now dead brethren. One at a time, I can take 'em, though 2 breaths will kill me ...

Near death to an off screen GWoMany Colours. Its a matter of time, I fear ...

Major break in Colluin. And since Laputa eludes me, I might as well wear the Palantir. Breathing Logrus for 813 is not bad, though its nothing like what Larry Logrus could do.

Tiamat was tough for me. I could attempt her from a distance with a 724hp logrus breath (I had low hp at the time). But she would breathe down my hitpoints and surround me with dragons, so I finally setup anti-summoning, allowing her to stand next to me. Amber has a wonderful activation, and my rod of healing was helpful. A couple !Healing as well. A teleport away to regain spellpoints, and a final obliteration with a weak logrus breath. But she dropped Thorin.

I'm still having trouble covering all resistances. Nether and Disenchantment have been lacking the entire game. Well, maybe Crimson will come with a lucky random resist :)

Nasty nasty blood curses. They all seem to be cursing. Cyberdemons and Cantoras. Abhoth and Cyberdemons and Solars. But no statue yet ... Still, there are 5 remaining Amberites, 2 more wanted (out of 6), and I grow tentative!

No realm beats chaos for powerdiving. Start at DL34, keep levels small. Call the void to destruct the level. Enlightenment to find the double stairs down. Repeat. For quest levels, Call the Void anyway. That *destructs* the entire level (usually, if levels are small), leaving just one monster on the level to kill :) DL34 to DL81 in about 5 minutes of play time!

DL88 quest is not the Unicorn, so who can it be? I really don't want to fight the Destroyer just yet ...

On 20.3.2010 00:24 chris wrote:
[CL50:DL88] 14:32
DL88 quest was Gothmog. He's a pushover, but the level also had a GCV which somehow did not get destructed by my initial calling of the void. Combat dropped Crimson. Also picked up Tulkas, the Jewel, Belthronding, and maybe 20 other artifacts. Killed a bunch of uniques too.

So, with max int, I'll now wear Julian even though it costs me 50sp. Finally, all resistances! I'm still a little slow though ...

Heh ouch, two extremely bad shadowers, star-spawn and metal babble. Sorry to see your character die, Chris--it always hurts when I see the death screen, and my first thought is always "I spent HOW much time on that character???"

I see your point about magic rocket being viable for high mages, esp with decrease mana consumption, but I can't help but contrast them to blue mages, who have one of the funnest spells in the game: Starburst (the monster version), which for 32 sp (with decrease mana consumption) nets you 450 + 10d10 damage with a 0% fail at lvl 50. It is also HIGHLY satisfying blowing light-sensitive monsters away with that spell, such as the Witch-King or Eihort, or your routine Nightwalker, which takes 1 1/3 Starbursts to kill. Their breath weapons are extremely mana economical as well, and are great for blowing away packs of plasma/nether hounds for fast level gain, or for killing mid power uniques.

The few advantages I can see for Chaos High Mages would be 1) Eat Magic (no further explanation needed), 2) Word of Destruction (again, no further explanation needed), and 3) Breathe Logrus, which sounds like the most powerful absolute damage spell in the game, with the exception of the now-completely-useless Death Ray. I should look up the Unicorn of Order--it's been so long since I've attempted to kill herm, that I forget if she resists chaos. If she doesn't, I would so play a Chaos High Mage just to blow her away :)

On 20.3.2010 14:04 chris wrote:
Larry Logrus completely annihilated the Unicorn of Order, what with a 1000+ hp logrus breath. No, she does not resist chaos, and I would say a Chaos HM is the easiest class to kill her with being even more effective then a Death HM (Hellfire does more damage at 1332 but costs 50% more sp and *Destruction* is much more effective for handling her summons then Mass Genocide). Some monsters, like Atlas, also get confused by the logrus, so it can be doubly effective. But, alas, the Serpent resists it ...

I like Blue Mages, but no Eat Magic is freakin' *huge*. In the end game, !RestoreMana should be plentiful so it won't matter much. But otherwise, you will constantly need to teleport away and regen spell points. Although, I did manage to win a Spectre BM once, and that was much easier (Just back off into the walls to regain sp). I too loved the Starburst. I also really really loved the disintegration breath. As the Serpent approached, I would line up horizontally, breath disintegration in his direction (which works like 30 stone to muds in one) opening up a narrow corridor for LoS and the Starburst.
