Since I lack all originality, and can do nothing but copy the interesting stuff that Dave does, here is my scythe attempt.

Of course, can I be guaranteed of finding one? I think with Clairvoyance I can ...

So, High Elf since I peeked at which races are not affected. High Mage to limit attacks to a mere 3. Life for the 0% 2000hp healing spell :) I just need to keep my alignment from going evil and not get too unlucky. I should have 900+ hp in the end game, and hopefully that will be enough.

Early digging to enchant a shooter. Blind identify (no pseudo id and no id for this class) to luck into a defender in the orc q. Now, I need some luck on the DL6 and 12 quests. This class is hard to get going ... I perhaps have enough stealth for Sting?

50 game days waiting for ~Z. When at last it came, it was on an amulet of the magi for 140,000gp :P So I risked the Vapor Q without poison resistance, fearing a somewhat likely racial scramble. Only one toxic breath, though, and it had no such effect!

-Detection and 9 stair scums later I find the %. OK, time to get nasty :)

Now, where is that freakin' Death Scythe?? Actually, I'm hardly in a position to melee. Rather, I'm better off using some lucky early wands to kill dragon's. I can just barely off a hell wyrm, and that requires me to cast Cause Critical Wounds (14d15 dam) successfully a few times.

I'm in too early for a mage ... Stupid Jack of Shadows is inside as well. Damn, he's fast. If not for an early Silver Chariot off an It clone, I'd probably be dead to his darkness storms.

Well, I'll give him a go. Rockets should be enough if I can damage him first and if he doesn't go bonkers healing himself.

I picked up Thorin and Fingolfin as well :)

Jack of Shadows: +40 speed. Geez. Even with Darkness resistance and 500hp, he nearly killed me with darkness storms. I wounded him down to 5 stars with Dragon Frost and then finished him off with 4 rockets before he could heal. He's got a nice cloak though ...

I nearly doubled my damage output thanks to the quest ... Can I kill dragons with melee now? Let's go find out!

Boy, lack of blindness resistance was killing me. Every wyrm would blind me, cutting me off from my delicious 0% fail healing spell. Finally, I just did the Old Castle for Indra, which helps boost my Int as well as giving nice *El. Stupid me, I almost didn't realize that this +4 Con rand art armor is now a perfect fit and adds a much needed 120hp. 532 is just too low to brave any deeper in the dragon's lair, even with all resistances and lots of healing. 652 is better, and I can probably get away with it. But first, let me do the Angband quests to 56 or so ...

I was getting bored with Silver Chariot, even though it is clearly the better way to go. With this kit, I give up 180sp, but do a bit more damage vs. dragons. I should scum the moon a bit more for both XD and vorpal ... still, if I were smart, I would go back to my previous kit for the extra +2 con and 180sp.

Damnit, I wanted my 4th book. Its risky, but the best way to get it is to head to R'lyeh with lots of destruction. Luckily, Nyogtha quickly gave me the Jewel, and I was able to quickly locate a copy of Blessings of the Grail in a large vault thanks to the enlightenment effect. 4 _*Destruction* was just barely enough, it seems, as I only had 1 charge to spare! Stupid outer space gods ...

Now, back to the lair, I think. Or perhaps Angband proper. I don't like R'lyeh as I am due for a moronification, and I'm still plenty weak. Low hp and no sustain con makes me sad ...

Back in the lair training my skill with the scythe. So far, I've had 2 return blows in a single round a couple of times, for like 300+ damage. I'm keeping myself topped off with healing, and its going OK.

So, how long before I cut myself in half?

On 3.1.2010 22:52 chris wrote:
OK, 750hp in a single round on 2 return blows. One was plain, the other was a superb vorpal. It didn't say that I eviscerated myself ... but Geez! Still alive, though :)

I love Ultimate Resistance. I'm still scared to death of the Destroyer, but at least now I can put up some decent AC (280) and reflection. All I need is bad timing as single strikes back to me over 400hp seem to somewhat common.

Ring of Con +4 at this stage of the game? Pshaw! Where is Tulkas at least? And the scythe's 35lbs costs me a whopping 210sp in encumbrance, so Eat Magic is essential!

[CL50:DL95] 14:32
Well, I gave up on my first attempt at the Destroyer. I was in a severely unlucky streak with the scythe (he has a 200AC as well) and just could not even get a star off him. I'll try again in a bit. Probably, I'll give up on the Warding True as its cost is better spent healing and my high AC and reflection should limit his destructiveness. He breathes disintegration way to often anyway ...

Otherwise, I am amazed to have wielded the scythe for so long. 500-600hp of strike back happen every so often, but with only 3 attacks, I might be safe a bit longer. My strategy is to cast healing whenever my hp are below 800 ...

Combat was really tough ... I'm not sure what my accuracy vs. AC 300 is, but its not good. Plus, he was apt to chuck in a rocket after my scythe betrayed me. But I finally got him ...

And the Destroyer, well, I was taking 3x more damage from the scythe then from him. I would heal every other turn or so, and when low on mana, I could stand next to him and eat magic 9 or so times to regain sp ... only needing to heal once. Then back to slaughtering the both of us with the scythe. Craziness.

Finally, a large vault came with 2 un-identifed rings in it. They took a long time to get to because there were so many monsters in the way, including the largest pack of trolls I have ever seen! At least 100 in the mob ... and I need to be so careful as I fight. I don't think it would be fair for me to swap weapons for mobs ...

Anyway, I also fought thru several uniques including Loki who just loved the 5x slay on the 10d10 death scythe ... I also woke up to the fact that lack of blindness resistance vs. a blinder that also can dispel magic is potentially deadly ... I didn't even have *destruction* as Loki also drains charges. But I was able to quaff !healing (that's why I am carrying them) and recast the ultimate resistance. I have Buckland if need be ...

Well, long story short, the rings were Nenya and Tulkas. I think I will wear them both :)

68% accuracy vs. AC175. Wahoo!

Base speed of +23 is too slow for the end game ... Oberon gave me lots of early troubles and was guaranteed to dispel my ultimate resistance. But I do have infinite healing thanks to Eat Magic, and I just took my time. He rewarded my patience with the royal crown of amber (extra +3 speed) that somehow also came with Disenchantment resistance. Cool. Blindness resistance on the crown means I can go back to Fingolfin as well. Still, I don't like +26 base speed with the death scythe. I have 30-40 more uniques to kill, so I'll just wait a bit for a better ring of speed. The best I've seen so far is +9 ... and they are pretty darn common down at this depth :P

Huh. I remember slicing right through Combat Echizen with Reaper, because he has such low HP and the Death Scythe has a 3x slay on him. Plus, he wastes moves on GoI. Must be because Warriors have much higher accuracy against AC 300

On 6.1.2010 01:23 chris wrote:
Yeah, he was hard to hit for me. Maybe 20% accuracy? It probably took 30+ rounds of melee for me to kill him. (I'm just guessing, of course). That's maybe 90 attacks and I needed to land 10 or so to kill him, not counting his healing. Well, the Serpent should be easier to hit :)

[CL50:DL100] 17:40
Winning post ... I could not distinguish any extra hazard in the final battle, as getting wounded down to 300hp every other turn is normal for me, death scythe or not.

Still, I did make a go at the Serpent with Tulkas rather than the +9 speed ring and decided it was too risky, especially with the extra encumbrance from all my potions. Also, I put down my rods to favor !RestoreMana over Eat Magic. And while 25+ !RestoreMana might have been enough, it is better to be able to top off spell points as the Serpent approaches, saving all available mana for healing.

So, second go was a charm, and not really too difficult after all. Of course, I am completely lucky not to have cut myself in two with the scythe ...

After Thoughts:
I don't see how to win with the scythe without 0% fail life magic. I would have required 10,000+ !healing and 5,000 !*healing* otherwise :) Seriously, I cannot begin to fathom the amount of healing required for this guy. The worst was whiffing on some wimpy monster like a fire hound and having your hp drop by 500 or so. I seem to recall seeing a 'zerker win with a scythe, and they have tons of hp, but the only time I ever tried it I quickly died ...

I'm glad this guy made it because I don't have the heart to try it again. It was darn fun though, and I was at least 3 times as deadly in melee as a life high mage would otherwise be ...

Aside from those 2 early back to back close calls of about 800hp, I only had one other really bad round. I had maybe 3-4 500+ hp close calls, but when you have 900+hp and ready healing, those aren't so bad ... Unless your oppenent tags you with a mana storm. But mostly, the monsters must have been too busy laughing at me to take advantage. God knows Fiona had the best shot, as I took myself from full hp down to 40 or so on a single *GREAT* deep return cut, and all she had to do was launch a fire bolt to finish me off ... But she just chuckled instead, allowing me to heal right back up :) (I was on a glyph too, so maybe she thought about attacking ... who knows?)
