Half Titans are big. I mean, really big. Giant. It's just that they level so sloooooow ... so you better be patient. This one is, and Larry Logrus is just biding his time until he gains Breathe Logrus. Should do something like 1050hp damage given his nice 107% life rating ... But that's still a long way off. Next level gives a 180hp Rocket, and I'll settle for that ;)

Wow, that took forever, even with scumming greater wyrms.

At CL37, I broke down and did the Cloning Pits. It was a walk in the park with my Legendary[7] stealth. I used eat magic a bit early on to build a safe zone, but after that it was rest and rockets, rockets and rest. Be careful with Logrus in the Cloning Pits. It seems like the right spell to cast on those queen ants when you can't get next to them (rockets just hit the first monster in the way), but it really really isn't. Try it some time and you will see ...

Once I got my rocket down to 0% fail (CL39), I decided to get the 4th book early, rather than waiting for CL40 like I usually do. You gotta love being able to get your last book from a quest reward ... It is so difficult with Death/Demon/Crusade to get that all important last book! The big find in the Node of Chaos was the Palantir, which allowed my to swap in my *Acid helm, and then I realized I'd prefer Indra instead, so I quickly did the Old Castle. Another easy quest ... The Greater Titans are easily handled with Invoke Logrus, as they readily polymorph into something less dangerous (and are confused if they don't).

And at this point, I *still* was only CL39. So, I pushed thru some more dragons. It was Baphomet that finally leveled me up, and I quickly learned the Mana Storm and killed him with it, despite it costing 60+ with no skill.

But now, I master the Storm, and it is 14% failure for 37 sp. All that work to get the storm ... and now I need to take a break ;)

Oh, 2,850,000 xp to CL40. I need CL43 for the Logrus Breath, which is when the fun really starts ... but how long will that take? I probably need 5,000,000 xp ...

You really should try Heng with Preserve mode off. It's a whole different dynamic.

Eliminates a lot of the quick levelling tactics, as to retreat has a significant cost.

Plus it adds quite a bit of risk to the game.

I'll have to remember to give that a try some time ... I looked over some of your classic dumps and see that you almost always play without Preserve mode. I never noticed that before, and my hat goes off to you!

How often are "special" levels actually artifacts? I started using preserve back in the mid to late 1990's when 99.999999% of special levels were stupid jelly pits. But everything else in hengband is so well done that I imagine they must have made some improvements in this area.

I do like "preserve off" in entroband though, since then you know the level has something worth fighting for (Though I hate to lose artifacts!). And yes, skimming the top of the dragon's lair for speed leveling has an unnatural feel to it. But the game is sooooo boring from about CL30 to the Cloning Pits. Something really should be done about it ...

It's been awhile since I've played a *band, so I'm going by some foggy memories here. But with Heng I'd say special fairly frequently meant an artifact. And knowing you *couldn't leave* the level until you found it made for some really epic moments, especially given the degree of nastiness of OOD monsters in some of Heng's vaults. Typically I'd sooner lose the character than miss finding whatever it was that was hiding on that level. Checking the Artifacts Seen screen and seeing I missed something often made me cease caring about the character. Fun stuff overall.

I know I tried switching off Preserve for some variant or another, and just hated how cheap it made everything feel. Oh, GCV, 4D5 unidentified sword, and something too hard for me to safely handle? I'll just WoR and find it another day. ...blah.

Much cooler was: GCV, 1 WoR ? left in your inventory, and you still hadn't revealed the last few rows of cells, while the level was teeming with all sorts of OOD badness that you've managed to teleport away. What do you do? Almost out of cure criticals, no blindness resistance, insta-death breathers lurking in random places on the level? You get your artifact hungry ass back into that GCV until you map the last square!

Like I said... a whole different dynamic. Much more fun and satisfying, in my opinion. But certainly the early leveling stages go quite a bit slower.

P.S. Sorry to clutter up your character dump with this nonsense. I still enjoy reading these snapshots from favorite variants.

Back to the ways of logrus, and the unsurpassed fire power of the chaos high mage. I've just picked up the wondrous logrus breath, and Larry is now quite happy. Sure, sure. Its main utility is to kill uniques who can't be polymorphed, but can sometimes be confused. Lets see:
[1] Mana Storm: 472 dam, 5% fail, 37 sp
[2] Breathe Logrus: 917 dam, 9% fail, 41 sp.
When the breath works, it is incredible! (Heck, that Mana Storm is incredible, being plenty powerful to win the game with).

Wow! This is total power. Tiamat? A joke. I took 8 stars off her before she finally breathed. I hardly broke a sweat, as she only got one breath off before dying. Iketa the Brave? I just backed behind a chasm and pelted him with logrus. He stood there like a fool. What's 917hp of damage among friends? Banor=Rupart? He never had a chance to split. Jack of Shadows? "The power of shadow is infinte." Yeah ... Right. Bah bye!

I really need to curb my enthusiasm, as it is easy to get power drunk with all this offense ... Its not like a great wyrm of chaos couldn't kill me with two breaths. And I still lack sound and shards resistance ...

The Norsa was a bit more of a challenge, as it was prone to summon nasty shard breathing dragons. I got gashed down to 500hp and I was leaking blood to the tune of an additional 100hp/round (I hate shards!) at one point. So, when the Norsa dropped Jack's cloak, I figured it was time for an equipment shuffle to cover shards resistance. This left me with a meager +14 speed, but I was still generally hasted, so not a biggee.

The big turn around came when I found a pit of ancient dragons of all sorts. Bam! Bam! Bam! In about 2 minutes, Werewindle, Tulkas and Brand all showed up, netting me an additional +16 speed, and a very respectable base +30 speed. I now always fight at +40 speed, which is quite good :)

But again, I seem to be missing shards resistance. I won't kill an Amberite without it, so they all receive immediate destruction. I think I would even swap a ring of shards resistance for my ring of speed! Also, if I can find Dwarves then I think I will switch back to Indra. Blindness resistance is somewhat important for a book based spellcaster, and I seem to need to keep my Int at 18/260 or higher to deal with all the moronifications. Very annoying!

Mana Storm: 0% fail, 484 dam, 37 sp
Breathe Logrus: 0% fail, 993 dam, 41 sp

Sweet :)

Moronification is really annoying. Rchaos should protect from that.

I think it's happened 3 times to my Mirror Master, and of course more often as he gets deeper.

Mage-classes with big nukes are fun. For the mirror-master to do big damage requires a lot of setting up, which slows down diving quite a bit. Just beat the Norsa recently myself.
Wish I had your speed fix. :)

Well, the moronifications have stopped ... for now. I had two back to back, within minutes of each other, and that sent me into tantrum mode :) I think a high saving throw helps a bit, but I'm not sure ...

I finally, finally found a ring of shards resistance. Just in time too, as my DL76 quest was for Bahamut. With Preserve Mode on, I just "Call the Void" too close to a wall. I think this is supposed to be a liability ... but its actually the only reason I ever use that spell. It gives a giant destruction effect, destroying half the level (You take like 200hp damage as well). Teleport and do it again. Now, the only monsters on the level are me, and Bahamut. Let's get it on!

Logrus quickly did the trick, and I would think with Bahamut's 18 or so excellent drops, coupled with the 3 additional excellent objects for the quest reward, that I would get something decent. Nope. Piles and piles of crap!

OK, time for DL88, which I just know is the Destroyer. I load up with a bit of healing, pick up my ring of speed +9 (who needs shards resistance vs. the destroyer?), carry that reflecting mirror for a swap, and what the heck, I was going to leave my shards resist at home, but let's bring it along just in case.

Good thing, too (again!) as the quest monster was the Unicorn, who does breathe shards, along with one or two other nasty tricks. Same approach as with Bahamut. Double Void cleared the level for a little one on one fighting. She's a munchkin, and won't leave it that way for long! But 1,004hp of logrus is way to much for her, and I dispatched her without using any healing. She summoned ancient dragons a bit, but I teleported away (pulling the space time wyrms with me), destructed and returned, destructing her summons along the way. The only mistake on my part was letting her get too close. I was carrying some staves of healing for the destroyer (Its always the destroyer at DL88 ... what happened?), and she nearly touched me. I quickly put down my staves after that, and finished her off. I pulled the last 6 stars off her at full hp, and she did nothing but blink a few times, and heal as well.

Very few character classes can handle the unicorn like this ... she is formidable in melee, generally will summon Nodens and Raphael, as well as wyrms of power. Getting her early as a quest probably helped keep the lid on the power of her summons, which was nice.

Again, not much to show for it!

Finally! CL50 took forever in coming, requiring something like 12,850,000xp to achieve. I'm 1039hp, but I'm also 25hp below max given my 18/210 con. 1064hp is soooo much better than 1039 that I am ashamed to even post this guy. Really! It's embarrassing!

I built a Destroyer kit with reflection, healing, speed, and the palantir to swap detect him. He showed up immediately, and was easily dispatched (1 rod and 3 staff charges of healing was all that was required). Really, if you negate his mana bolts (reflection) and his melee (distance), he is quite tame ;)

Sauron was easy as well, though he did manage a mana storm. Cantoras, no sweat. Richard Wong? No damage sustained. In fact, this character seems to be rolling. I still have 87 or so uniques to go, but I think I have what it takes. Probably, I should swap back in my shards resistance, though I think +23 base is a bit too slow for the end game. Maybe if I can artifact a wizardstaff? We'll see.

Oh, I love Feanor! And Vilya too! Yes, these are nice additions. I'm halfway thru a GCV on DL94, but my take so far has exceeded all expectations. Now, just give me Numenor please, so I can resist shards at last!

Yes, I know. Another post from Larry Logrus. Come on, already. But really, this character is truly charmed. Let's overlook, for the moment, the fact that the ?ArtifactCreation yielded what has to be the lamest artifact ever (Antimagic, Light Up, and Slay Demon!).

Let us instead focus on the fact that Larry found yet another GCV. This one at DL98. And this one, of the greater greater variety (One has excellent objects every other square, and an open middle. This one had excellent objects every square). Inside, there was Amber. Also, Nenya. Why don't we just skip Narya all together. I mean, rather then going +1, +2, +3 on the rings of power. Let us go +3, +2, +1 instead! I much prefer things this way! And, well, Amber came with Shards resistance as well.

I don't know what else this character could possibly want. Really, help me out here. What would improve this guy?!

Nah! I've never seen the Serpent drop faster. Probably my easiest win ever. 2 !Healing, 1!RestoreMana, Activations on Lohengrin and Amber. I expected more from him ;)

Once your half-titan Chaos high mage had reliable Breathe Logrus and a huge hit point pool, there was probably no stopping you. After all, you had the most powerful attack spell in the game, at the cheapest spell cost, doing potentially the most damage it could do (given your race).

Nice job for a fun caster win. Have you done a Sorcerer yet? That was a heck of a challenge.

On 16.8.2009 15:07 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
It was a shame, but the Serpent resists Chaos! So, I had to kill him with just 500hp Mana Storms. But killing him with a powerful distance spell is just soooo much more effective than melee. And safer too ...

Sorcerers are fun. I just did Skeletor recently ... They are fragile, and they have fail rates like a mage, which is annoying. But they can do everything! Having a Dimension Door and a Mana Storm is probably more powerful than this guy was ... Sorcerers (and Berserkers too!) are classes where you must play perfectly to win. Actually, the zerker requires a bit of luck to win as well, since it is too easy to die thru no fault of your own. I love the symmetry between these two classes:

[1] Sorcerers cannot fight. And I don't mean like a mage. They just totally cannot fight! Berserkers rule the world with fighting. Nobody fights better.

[2] Sorcerers rule the world of magic. They have wonderful magic skills, and can cast all spells at Master level without learning them. Berserkers can't use magic. They always fail when trying to use a magical device. They can't read scrolls, and won't receive mutations that can activate. They can't cast spells.

[3] Sorcerers HD are calculated as 1/2x. Berserkers are calculated as 2x.

[4] Sorcerers Con bonuses are calculated as 2/3x. Berserkers are calculated as 3/2x.

[5] Sorcerers are hard to start, but easy to win (IMHO). Berserkers are easy to start but very hard to win (again, IMHO).

I've been trying to build a 'He-man' dual to my 'Skeletor', but have failed twice, dying once to Gerard's summoning of Yig (and entourage of 20+ nether breathers), and once to the Plain Gold Ring. My win percentage with berserkers is really low (10%?) though I can usually level them up to 50 no problem. Conversely, my high level sorcerers have seemed invincible (OK, only 2 for 2 so that sample size is too small :), but I always have trouble getting them started. There's that symmetry again ...
