Big Boy Bob is hungry!

Ever since Leafsrock posted a Sorcery High Mage, its been a bit of a curiosity for me. I managed to win one (a High Elf), and the end game power was surprising. Of course, you'll need a big stack of wands of rockets to do it, but you can recharge your stack, and rockets and dimension door combo nicely.

This time, I decided to try the Half Giant. Neither as smart nor as stealthy as the High Elf, they do fight better, and have more hitpoints (Even Fearless Half Giant vs. Mighty High Elf ... though the margin is slim!) Also, intrinsic shards resistance is nice, sustain strength is nice, and I like the stone to mud racial ability.

So, I did a fair amount of early game town scumming ... enough to land a wand of disintegrate (almost immediate!) and then 2 wands of drain life (right after the first wand ... wow!), but then hit a multi-hundred day dry spell. Finally, a staff of mana storm turned up to complete the "One and Done" kit, and I had been buying wands of lightning and cold balls all the while, so I had 10 of each. This was plenty to kill any of the Storm/Ice/Hell/Bile Wyrms, so I scummed them, using rings as swaps for double resist. The RNG had the last laugh though. As if to thwart all my scumming efforts, it gave me a quick Slayer from that Great Hell Magic Mushroom Were-Quythlug guy. I sat on this for a while, as I was effective without melee, but decided the staying power of melee with a good vampiric weapon would be required for the Cloning Pits. It was. And the pits were easy (Though my wand of disintegrate helped to tame a wayward Gachapin). More evil laughter from the RNG as the first It clone dropped Ringil, and a Gachapin clone dropped Werewindle. "Bwah! Hah! Hah! You must melee, fool!"

I stuck with Slayer (which I still wield) and Isildur, which kept my spell points under 100 due to encumbrance for quite some time. But finally, I've managed to lighten the remainder of my equipment stack sufficiently to permit ample spellcasting.

And one more nod to Slayer. It really helped in the Node of Sorcery quest, making it not only doable, but downright easy! Just an expected !resistance for each of the 5 Great Wyrms of Many Colours, and 1 !healing for the last one, who was quite insistent on breathing every single turn.

So, I really want Thorin. I'll take Fingolfin, too. Either would allow me to swap in Ringil for that extra speed. And as I morph out of my melee posture, the +10 speed bonus from the shining sword looms large.

On my recent quick dive in Angband I came across a second staff of mana storm laying on the ground on DL29! Now, I really must do the Volcano for a third. This will give me 6000 damage potential, though it requires me to stand right next to my foe. GoI can assist in that respect, however :)

The RNG simultaneously caresses and mocks me. First, Dworkin is my CL50 Q, and he obliges with the Jewel, but not after some really annoying games of hide and seek. Combo with multiple moves to flash into LoS, summon a swarm of nasties, and then teleport away. Geez, I'm only numerically twice as fast as he is! In the end, it took all 15 of my mana storms to tame him, and I'll take that Jewel. I don't need the enlightenment, but I do need the +3 speed, +3 intelligence, and resist confusion and chaos.

Next, its DL56 for a really tough Yamata-no-Orochi. I can just handle him with GoI, except that the RNG blessed me with my first moronification of the game, biffing a 19% fail rate spell into a 31% fail rate, and then failing my first 3 attempts at casting it. 4th time is a charm, though, and heck, its not like I need my mana for anything else. This guy also took all 15 of my mana storms, and a single disintegrate as well. And yet more mockery from the RNG, as there is Aglarang laying in the ashes! I also got the Y's signature Kusanagi Katana, which I don't think I will need unless I am starved for Disenchantement resistance later on.

Third, is that the Glaive of Pain just fell into my lap. Now, when I play melee characters, I just get Narthanc, Dethanc and then "Shut up and make do already!" This guy gets Slayer then Ringil then Werewindle then Aglarang then the Glaive. And its still very early ...

The magic continues ... I killed Tiamat even though I wasn't carrying any potions of resistance. You gotta love that globe! She dropped Dor-lomin and Lohengrin, among other things. These guys are so rare. I was using them both, but frequent moron mutations forced me into a high Int kit, with Indra for an extra +5 as well as sustain. But now, a vault of DL75 gave Amber, and Amber came with resist Disenchantment! Thats +12 speed since I was using a ring for the resistance, and now I can use a ring of speed. Nice ... 18/200 Int is fine. Its just that 18/160 after the moron is intolerable.

So, now begins the long wait. This character needs rockets to be effective. Rockets start showing at DL75. So, I recall, enlighten, recall, enlighten, etc. until I find some. I'll gather other essentials along the way ...

Mmmm ... Tasty rocket goodness. That's 4 wands of rockets and 2 wands of disintegrate in just over an hour. I want 10 of each, please! And probably at least 20 wands of rockets for the end game.

The resource acquisition is coming along nicely. Since I started, I've gotten 10 wands of rockets, 1 wand of Disintegrate, and maybe 10 staves of healing. I also picked up resist elements from a !Polymorph, but the RNG quickly quelled my enthusiasm by instantaneously moronifying me ... something like only 12 seconds to exact vengeance. Bastard! Well, I swapped in Gogo, so now my stealth is only Heroic. But ready double resistance is too important to play without, and I was getting turned into a moron every 5 minutes or so of play anyway. Trudging to Zul would just double the play time for this character, adding tens of thousands of extraneous keystrokes ;)

So, I kill uniques as I see them. I have quite a bit of firepower at the moment, and easily killed Gothmog with my rockets. Also snagged Azriel, but forget to check for the ability to cast psychospears in addition to dispel magic. Azriel can do the former, but not the latter. Funny, I went Invulnerable and then he immediately copied me. So I cast dimension door and we played cat and mouse until his spell wore off. The I re-engaged, invulnerable of course, and learned a stiff lesson about the deadliness of psychospears. Well, I had to heal twice ... so perhaps not such a stiff lesson after all? I got Benedict on the same level (GCV #2) and that is the extent of my firepower at the moment. I could have sworn Benedict teleported me away before dying, and I risked a recharge on my stack of rockets (got back 4 charges), but alas, it was just his blood curse. I nice way to say goodbye, I guess.

Having plentiful rockets is too much fun. I'll just focus and gather some more! I really need a bunch of disintegrate anyway. The thing about rockets is they hit the first monster in the way, so killing summoners from a distance can become annoying. There is always dimension door (Against the Serpent, dimension door so the Serpent goes out of destruction range, but his monsters do not. Then destruct the summons, and set up a line of sight corridor again ... Tedious, but it works). But, disintegrate also can do the trick, though it is considerably weaker than rockets (250hp vs. 400hp).

Big Boy Bob is getting Bigger. And Badder! Yes, 15 wands of rockets now. There is no stopping me :)

Actually, there are plenty of uniques left, so I should not be so cocky. Plus, my plentiful firepower is still insufficient for handling all the GCVs that this character seems to be blessed with. When I run out of fire power, then I just destruct, recharging my staves as necessary (I've recharged more than 20x on some levels without blowing up at all!)

My goal is enough rockets for the 30k monsters without recharging. At 1.6k per wand, thats maybe 20 wands. I'm almost there :)

My Destroyer posture. With GoI, I hardly need reflection, but its better to be safe. The Destroyer managed to sneak about 500hp of damage thru my invulnerability, so I did need one charge from a rod of healing, but mostly, it was "Shoot and Scoot", with the shooting being a 400hp rocket and the scooting being a very high precision dimension door. Sweet!

I think I've gathered enough ... Time to dive to DL99.

I just found a "bubble vault" at DL98, which can be extremely profitable. Details are in the attached screenshot, but here is the aftermath.

With my firepower, I can still only take on 2 high caliber uniques ... maybe 3. Oh, and recharging costs like 80,000gp, so it gets expensive, but that is what Alchemy is for, no?

I feel slow now, but I really wanted to wear Jack of Shadows for the stealth and permanent telepathy ... I was getting hammered by the Eldritch Horror every time my telepathy wore off and I had to recast. No, I'm already a moron, but I did not have sustain int, so that stat rapidly heads towards 0 ... this time in the face of a piddly Nightgaunt. Sheez. But Vilya sustains intelligence, among other things, so that is probably a problem of the past :)

Brand and Feanor are still wanted. Come on, RNG! How many GCV and Bubble Vaults does it take?

80 uniques to go ...

I made a go at the serpent, but he quickly summoned Vecna who got a free attack on me and drained all my charges of Disintegrate. After that, I decided that I better cleanup all the dungeon masters first. Plus there is still Azathoth and Shuma-Goroth.

But the game is winding down ... GCV#6 gave another ring of power. These things grow on trees! That just leaves the one ring to find ...

That was easier ... I left Azathoth and Shuma alive ... and Morgy of course. Funny, at one point the Serpent summoned all three, so I dimensioned back a bit, destructed, set up line of sight, and the Serpent summoned all three *again* on his first move. Jerk! But he did not have too much of that, and I had nearly infinite resources. I needed to recharge my giant stack of rockets twice towards the end, once getting back 8, and then getting back 12 charges. Very effective ...
