Ditchdigger's favorite things to do are throw shovels at fleeing monsters and eat elvish waybread right off the floor.

First serious attempt at using only shovels to damage enemies. Need better stuff and more stuff and some other stuff that I'm working on.

Heh, with 16 potions of heroism you too can be someone's hero! Awesome!

1600' is proving to be a brick wall of sorts. Mim is my deepest unique killed, who incidently melted and disenchanted all my stuff and dropped ethereal openings. Thanks. Shallowers I've left alive are his son Khim who manages to pop up when I'm out of speed or healing as does Azog. Teleported away Beorn, and ran like hell when I came across Lokkak. I would like Cambeleg, free action boots so I can damage ring again, thalkethothothth? for confu resist and either thranduil for telepathy or holhenneth or holcethoth whichever gives that super nifty detection activation. I suppose I'll be cleaning out orcs and trolls looking for the rare awesome drop for a while. I'll have to break out the smores for my campfest.

You meant Cambeleg, those give freeaction and combat bonuses as well as 2 cons. Camithrin are those *gloves of free action*, giving res light. The Holheneth gives res confu, blindness and detection activation.

Anyway awesome idea for a character, I really wonder how far that one will get...

Aww, babies first Troll pit. It wasn't totally futile, an Olog dropped the Phial. I was getting so tired of lugging oil too. My first chaos drake dropped the ring of resist poison. Need haste. And damage. Haste and damage. And artifacts.

About that "haste" part - while shovels are the only offense, do you allow wielding Cbragol just for a nice speed bonus? ;-)

Yes. Cubragol will become a necessity with what I have in mind for a reasonable final kit.

I sometimes wield missle weapons I want to sell for extra inventory space because I'm a pack mule. The only special rule I'm following with Ditchdigger is that he can only damage enemies with shovels. I never bother altering monsters with slow or sleep so that's a non-issue. I accidently annoyed something by using a staff of light one time but other than that it's been smooth sailing. It was difficult selling Sting, Firestar and a cutlass of extra attacks though.

Bagged my first Ancient Dragon! A green. Thorongil is cool and so is that 4th whap a round. Whap whap whap whap!! I can hang pretty good at 1750'. Deepest unique killed is Uldor but Azog and Khim are hiding and eluding me. I don't think I'd need speed or healing to kill them now what with my pharmacy of phase door and minor healing. I wish the store would stop being stingy with ccw.

Offed Kavlax, the Queen Ant, Azog and Khim. Ulfang narrowly escaped death several times with his nasty patriach/ranger chieftain/berserker summons. I need some FAangband shopkeeps so I can place an order, or at least the chance for a whole heap of speed and healing to show up in the market.

Thalkettoth is... different. But awesome! Yah I get 5 attacks a round now and am slightly hasted. Now as soon as I pick up a slice of bread I'm only +2 instead of -1. Came across an awesome Dwarven Shovel of Digging 1d3 +13 +17. Branded with acid, +9 to tunneling and strength and induced earthquakes. Ditchdigger was awed by the possible wig, but decided he was too attached to his starting shovel, which managed to get +11 damage with 30 or so scrolls. I was curious to see if I could trigger earthquakes by throwing it against Troll heads but 5 hits triggered no earthquakes and then it dissapeared.

Noooo!!!! A shovel in FA or O would be extremely painful. With like, 4,000,000 healing potions it would be possible to win, I suppose... but no fun!

Good luck with your druid, I've been keeping an eye on the druids that have been posting lately. I plowed about 30 or 40 into their graves so I have no useful things to say about druids.

Things are looking good for Ditchdigger at the moment. Would like nether resist and better damage output in my easy to plug in slots. Fingolfin, Dal-i-thalion and Elessar would be welcome finds. Current damage output is crummy but at least speed is rockin out.

Had an epic fight with Tselakus the Dreadlord which I won. He summoned up some of the Ringwraiths I had missed so it was nice to knock those out too.

Is it just by chance that your inventory in this dump contains no CCWs, or do you just not use them? I've always found them very useful in conjunction with phase door effects, since they can help economize healing potions.

Lol an entroband dual-wielding shovel basher! Haha, I love it. I think it would be easier to win angband with a shovel than entroband with whatever you wanted... I've yet to pay my heng and entroband dues so I don't know much about them except that they are beyond my current brain capacity.

Killing off uniques at 4000'. Just wiped the floor with the 3 angels, Ungoliant, Khamul, Glaurung, and the Cat Lord. Great Wyrms of Chaos are my current favorite dragons to kill.

When you fight those deep uniques (esp. Ungoliant), is there any particular strategy besides bash'n'heal? It seems like the big spider has so many hit points, it must have taken a long time and a lot of healing to take her out of max-damage-breath-weapon range.

Lol at those shrooms in your home =)

The old wail and bail won the day with Ungoliant. Bash and phase door then rest. I was able to get a wall between me and Ungoliant where she couldn't get at me or I would put a cave spider between me and her in an anti-summon corridor and rest up. I activated Soulkeeper one time after about 20 failed attempts, used about 14 hero potions, 6 ccw and either one *healing* potion or one healing potion... I can't remember which. The big factor was that she wasn't regenerating as fast as me. It took a lot of game turns probably but it didn't seem to take a lot of real time. Then again I was tripping on Nyquil... heh!

The shrooms... heh. :) It's a hang-up for sure. I like eating them when a character has done something cool, or I'm bored, or if I want to show off my awesome graphics card to friends. They usually end up left on the ground for a town drunk when I need the home space but I'm having a hard time parting with them this go-around. :)

I was teleporting away like a madman to get that last star off Maeglin. I was able to track down Lungorthin and kill him, making him the deepest unique killed. Currently at 4500' and I need to put the brakes on and start collecting potions again.

Nice new kit. I bet you were glad to be rid of Barahir. I can't think of any improvements short of finding Feanor or some Rings of Power. (Gondor for the activation could be nice I suppose although I don't know how the resists would work out). And can that really be the best Ring of Damage you've found?

Ah well. Looks like stuff is really coming together for Ditchdigger! ^_^

Yeah I know... +12 is kinda crummy... I was hoping for at least +16 when I got to here.

Well what he defenitly wants now is he Elfstone for another +7 damage. With a +16 ring that would take him to 384 damage... Mages don't do more than that :)
I don't think Narja/Nenya would beat a good +dam ring in this case where all damage is coming from the plusses. Vilya, now that would be a nice ring to find

But... wow you're really low on potions :(

Found Nenya... Telepathy rox!
Best of all I came across 2 potions of healing and a potion of Life!

I'm reminded of the family-man/superhero The Shoveller from Mystery Men.

Cool character you got there.

Thanks for the kind words! I haven't seen family guy or know about the shoveler but it sounds cool. I thunk up this crazy idea some years back as sort of like a life goal... heh.

Inching closer, killed Feagwath and Huan with an activation from Soulkeeper and a few ccw each. Wail and bail is still the order of the day. Another life potion!

Collecting stuff for the final battles. I wish I could skip the Sauron fight. Permanent speed a little low but I have lots of temp speed for every fight anyway and the damage boost from Vilya is worth it. If only I could find Elessar... grumble! I've found every amulet possible but Elessar!

Well Elessar wasn't there in 2.9.3 so using it would be sort of like cheating anyway ;-)

Elessar! w00t! Ditchdigger has been busy. 93/95 uniques slain. Only Qzlzlzlpup, the unique Lahtonen must've named, and Omarax remain...unless I've missed a unique somewhere. Out of all the deep uniques only the Tarrasque proved to be a real nasty fight. Time to get back to scavenging.

haha the only unique I have anything to do with is The Complainer ;-) I love Qlzqqlzuup though ;-)

Killed Omarax and Quizlzlppzpzp and buffed up for a very anti-climactic fight against Sauron. He whittled me down to 850 twice. He even summoned up one whole vampire lord, wow. I'm itching to fight Morgy now, but I'm going to try and find four more major healing potions. Between my two activations and horde of regular healing potions, I think eight major healing ought to be enough.

Good luck Ditchdigger! Kick Morgoth's pasty white ass and let us know how it goes!

Nice, looks like you managed to get "that human Element" out of your way. Good luck with Morgy though he will need it more than you :)

Live by the shovel, die by the shovel. I got impatient and went off with only the 4 major healing potions, 11 minor, 1 rod of healing and the 2 activates. Man, the battle was so intense! It's been a long time since angband made my heart race! I guess Morgoth got really ticked that I was using the general store shovel, I mean, I would be. I got him down to 2 stars when I ran out of healing. I started teleporting away and just resting up what little I could before he would bash down all the walls and we'd fight again for maybe a few more rounds. I should've recalled home when I realized I had come up short healing wise, but I just couldn't! I was hoping I could kind of keep him at 2 stars until Soulkeeper and Elessar would recharge and took a risk attacking with about 500 h.p. or so. Crap! Maybe someday a mighty warrior will pick up my shovel that dealt Morgoth 300 whaps to the toes, shins and kneecaps and finish the job.

Aww shucks. Thanks! I've never had so many people comment about one of my characters before. I feel bad that I didn't win... Ditchdigger deserved better! And man... all those hallucination mushrooms won't get eaten now. :( Next time I think I'll take the extra hour and find the four potions... heh.

Ah damn so the human element did indeed prevent you from winning... Don't frown as there is light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe the world will see DitchdiggerII sometimes.

I defenitly second what djabanete said, hero of everything warrior!

Damn. I was rooting for you too - and not just because I wanted to challenge you to see how far you could go with flasks of oil as your only weapon.
Nonetheless, getting this far is mightily impressive. You've successfuly proved that it's possible to kill Morgoth with a shovel, you just need the patience of a rock to gather enough healing.

Just try to do the same in 2.9.3... ;-)

Perhaps you ought to play multiplayer games, so that someone could keep those mushrooms safe. Terrible seeing the good stuff wasted like that.
