After a bit of break, I was planning on continuing a series of "island of lost toys" characters who seemed interesting. Just because of the particular usage or because they were so rare (a warper who doesn't use magic for combat ( except for actual warper spells), a demonologist who didn't cast spells or use Morgoth's stuff, a Manwe priest, a Symbiant who didn't summon, etc.) and beating Melkor, or at least Morgoth, with all of them.

The Demonologist croaked in the Void, the Warper actually won the whole banana, and then I came up with another class: the Druid Yeek who doesn't summon. After some recent chatter about how Yavanna isn't actually totally useless to worship, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Treehugger is that character (well, its taken quite a few tries to get one this far, so he's the version successful enough to comment upon). The rules are that he's not allowed to summon or use symbiants, but anything else is fair game. Surprisingly, Yavanna's spells might actually make for a decent melee character, so the tenative plan is for a Mindcraft/Barehand combo, supplemented with Yavanna spells and tree creation. Druid's don't get barehand to start, so he's got 35 quests in hopes of getting it. So far, not a single incarnation of Treehugger has received Barehand as a fumblefingers reward option, so this strategy may have to change.

(clevel: 29, dlevel: 22) Currently cruising through Mirkwood. Hasn't gotten barehand as a FF option yet, so mindcraft is still doing the heavy lifting. It should get him through Mirkwood and into Mordor, but he'll really want Barehand after that.

While FF hasn't been obliging, the Princess has been amazing. Treehugger's reward on BD5 was Narthanc, which was appreciated, and, even better, the reward for killing some Killer Fire Beetles on Mirkwood 19 was Feanor(!!!), the first time I've found it with a non-Lost Soul.

(clevel:34, dlevel:30) Treehugger has completed Mirkwood, killed the Sandworm queen and is glumly scumming the Sandworm hole, looking for statgain points. STR:10, DEX:27. They started at 10 and 9, so its funny how things develop, though admittedly, a good chunk of that DEX is from equipment.

I'm debating using Thalkettoth, Colannon, and the Amulet of Serpents or instead going with the randart dragon scalemail, the cloak of protection, and some other amulet. +6 speed and +3 DEX vs reflection, flight, rChaos, and whatever the new amulet provides. Hmm. At this depth, I'll probably go with the speed.

(clevel:41, dlevel:38) Found a couple of good vaults in the sandworm hole and some stat potions, so I allowed Treehugger to leave the hole. Yuck. I hate that place.

Things have gone swimmingly since then. 4 relic quests are done, many of the town quests are done (Gondolin Trolls was surprisingly easy with Mindwave and he gained 4 levels doing it), he's picked up some nice weapon options (and a bunch of boomerags with various *slays*, so he swaps them around depending on what he needs), and he's now into Mordor.

Unfortunately for Treehugger, he still doesn't hit very hard, especially against undead, demons, etc. and he totally bogged down on a quest for Elder Araneas. He needs to start transitioning his offense from Mindcraft to melee, but Barehand still hasn't turned up as a FF reward. I still think it will hurt him in the long-run, but I bit the bullet and switched to using Weaponmastery. He's heading into the Lothlorien Spider Quest. We'll see how it turns out.

(clevel:50, dlevel:70) Finished Mordor (skipping the last few FF quests), went after Trone and killed him and some brown Thunderlords with less trouble than expected, so I decided to give Maeglin a shot.

The battle's not over yet, but Treehugger's shot at even surviving, to say nothing of completing, the quest just took a huge turn for the worse. Everything was going fine, Balrogs were genocided away, Maeglin had been manuvered into melee range without summoning, and he was down to maybe 6 stars with Treehugger sustaining no significant damage.

Then, *ZAP*, Maeglin decides to fire off his biggest gun - summon uniques, and, well, I think he was happy with the result. In escalating order, he got: a Forest Wight, Beorn (hurray for small favors), Medusa the Gorgon, Akhorahil the Blind, a Nightcrawler, the Mouth of Sauron, and the Tarrasque.

I'm sure there's some way to finish the quest still, but the risk is probably too high. Oh, and Treehugger cast Treeroots, so he can't move, though can still use void gates.

(clevel:50, dlevel:110) Treehugger managed to survive the Maeglin quest by using Major Displacement to teleport everything else away (genocided the Nightcrawler), but the roots kept him in place. He then created void gates to chase Maeglin down. Was kind of like playing a Deathmold.

Finally pinned Maeglin down, confused him with mindwave, and beat him to death with Narthanc while dodging the Tarrasque and the Mouth. Killed Akhorahil with mindwave. Thought it would backlash, but never did.

After that, cruised through Angband where the only hard side quests happened early. He got Osyluths and GWoB early on, but the late ones were easy. Time Hounds (though Marda, Khamul, Dwar, and Adunaphel also showed up on that level), the Lernaean Hydra, Mumaks. Greater Balrogs one time, but it was a FF quest and Treehugger skipped it.

Made it to 99 in excellent time and decided to do the Thunderlord quest, mostly to level Narthanc. It had +5 CHR and tunneling, and I was drooling at the thought of getting +5 extra attacks, especially since Treehugger still didn't hit very hard.

Using Stone Prison and void gates, the thunderlords were easy, and Narthanc leveled a couple times, getting drain life, which is arguably better than +5 attacks.

Back to Angband, he found Sauron, but remarkably, Treehugger still hadn't found either the Anchor (very handy for killing Sauron) OR Flare (very handy for getting rid of the One Ring). Probably my first character to make it that far without finding both of them. Without the Anchor, the battle against Sauron was agonzing.

Treehugger was surprisingly able to tank everything Sauron threw at him, and Sauron never summoned. Sadly, Sauron would start teleporting away with about 3 stars left, and Treehugger (with all powerup spells running - Waterbite, Treeroots, Adrenal Channels, and Armor) had to chase him. Since Treehugger was only doing 850/round, assuming all attack hit, including everything, it took a LONG time to knock those last 3 stars off, since Sauron was constantly teleporting away and regenerating. Finally, Sauron did die, but he didn't drop the One Ring.

Treehugger went down a level and back up, found Sauron again. Much tougher battle the second time as, while Sauron summoned greater undead a couple times, and was suppored by a huge pack of Impact hounds. Treehugger managed to get him eventually, and got the One Ring.

Not thinking, Treehugger goes down the stairs, and there's Sauron. Its decision time.

Sigh. Void gates don't work on top of Mt Doom anymore, and I don't really think Treehugger can fight his way through.

Hmm. What happens if a Priest of another god puts on the One Ring? Lets find out. Yavanna drops him, but otherwise nothing. Treehugger is basically a mindcrafter now. Probably should have tried to fight through Mt Doom.

Treehugger fights Sauron with the various plusses and minuses of wearing the One Ring (mostly minuses thanks to the reduced HP) and can't cast his Yavanna spells anymore. Just Adrenal Channels and Armor, now. Its by far the toughest fight, forcing Treehugger to chug his Healing potions as Sauron goes "storm" crazy, casting mana and darkness storms every other move. Wearing the One Ring knocked off his rDark, and darkness storms actually do a lot of damage if you don't resist them (especially if you've only got 700-ish HP).

Finally, Sauron dies, and Treehugger starts looking for Morgoth.

This will be tricky. Morgoth hits MUCH harder than Sauron and Treehugger has just 3 healing potions left, though Sauron thoughtfully dropped a rodtip of healing, which Treehugger attaches to the mithril rod of the istari he's been carrying around.

Takes a while to find Morgoth. Treehugger finds him first on 107, but after knocking Morgoth down to 9 stars, he summoned Gothmog and a big escort, so Treehugger had to flee. There's an Altar of Melkor there, and without thinking about it, I have Treehugger start worshipping Melkor.

On his way down, Treehugger uses mindwave to clear a troll pit, getting him up to 6k piety.

Finally, on 110 Treehugger finds Melkor, and the battle is totally anti-climactic. Morgoth summons Ancalagon and an escort, but Treehugger genocides them away, positions himself so he can Ancalagon but not Morgoth and casts major displacement, teleporting them both away.

Using void gates, Treehugger gets back to Morgoth much, much faster than Ancalagon can, and having Prayer at 50 means that once Treehugger survives a few rounds, the multiple slowing effects stacking on Morgoth basically mean that battle is over.

Treehugger wins, but I'm mad at myself for converting to Melkor beacuse it felt like cheating. Treehugger probably would have died trying to destroy the One Ring. However, as it was, I never got to see how well a Druid stacks up against Morgoth in melee and that was sort of the point of the character. Oh well. I'm still happy he killed Morgoth.
