Who can fight better than a Spectre High Mage? Why, almost everybody, of course. Probably, a Lazy Yeek Tourist is more accurate! So, while Life does have 3 offensive spells (Cause Light|Medium|Critical Wounds), I think they must be a joke or something, as monsters generally resist.

So, it is a challenge to get going, and once you do, the Poison Needle is your only friend. How else could I garner the needed 10.8 Mxp for CL50 in just over 8 hours? Certainly not with normal melee! Killing Mycen and Brand were 80 to 100 round affairs! I even recently found an awesome weapon. It is a rand-art 2d9 trifurcate spear with Slay Dragon (6d9) and Force Brand (21d9). 3 swings for over 400 damage. Pretty sweet, huh? Well, its still 10+ rounds to take a single star off a Sky Drake, and that is with two handed wielding and blessing for increased accuracy.

Getting effective in melee is a huge challenge! It can be done, but requires:
Fingolfin (+10, +10)
Shiva's Boots (+5, +5)
Harness of Hell (+15, +15)
Heroism and Blessing (+22)
A very high quality weapon. At least (+20, _). Also, wield with two hands (+21, +4).

Probably, I'll try to win with Rockets, but in the mean time, I'll continue killing Sky Drakes hoping for good drops.

I'm calling it quits on the Sky Drake slaughter, despite never finding a pair of melee gloves. I had a fun moment when Santa Claus teleported me away. For about an hour, I had been teleporting away Ethereal, Gold and Bronze Dragons, since the poison needle is so unreliable. Well, the level was filled with hundreds of these guys by this point!!! So, I had to burn nearly 20 charges of *destruction* to clear things out.

I did pick up Tulkas, Hammerhand, Thorin, Hurin, Incanus, Werewindle, The Jewel, Bloody Moon and about 20 rings of speed. Also, 12 Mxp was nice. But I think I need to start looking for _Rockets, since I lack a true uber-weapon and the accuracy to use anything effectively in melee. I'm probably 20% accurate versus Sky Drakes, so there is no way I'll be able to top the 400 damage of a rocket.

Well, I was just able to beat Yig with melee. It took many rounds, but the battle was completely effortless on my part, combining the awesome power of infinite healing with the safety and anti-summoning tactics of passwall. Oh, and I guess that 288AC helped keep the damage off :D

So, I guess I can handle the near end uniques just fine (Yig is DL76). I still want rockets for the really tough guys, and I am now ready to begin my search. It will probably take 6 or 7 hours to build a suitable arsenal!

Artifacting PDSM is not usually a good idea ... except that I picked up +3 Str, Int, Dex, Con! That makes me very happy :D

Pretty easy run thru Gothmog and the Tarrasque. Surtur taught me that I suck at finishing monsters off, as he could just keep teleporting me away. By the time I got back to him, he would have regenerated way more than I can damage in a single round. Eventually, I wore down the RNG, and managed the 5 consecutive rounds of melee necessary to finish him off. Of course, a single activation from a _ManaStorm would do as well, so I am now carrying that. And, I scored my first -Rockets as well. So, when Cyaegha was down to 1 star and beginning the teleport other frenzy that seems to characterize all the uniques, I hit him with a _ManaStorm. This was not enough, and he started to run away, backing out of mana storm range. Ah! But that is what a good rocket is useful for! Bah Bye!

Artifact #2 gives:
The Diamond Edge 'Tesla Coil' (8d5) (+27,+27) (+4 to infravision) {IfDg;El|ES/Z~Tele}

Its OK, but not as good as:
The Trifurcate Spear 'Nnengtursun' (2d9) (+15,+14) (+4) {DxChDg;*Co;Ca|AM/DoL}

Still, I'm training my skill now, since I feel lucky about getting a +2 attack, slay evil, force branded diamond edge on my next attempt!

9 more wanted uniques for the scroll, but I bet I can find another one in the dungeon in the mean time. Plus, I'm not really sure how to kill Combat Echizen ...

OK, I decided Tesla Coil was better than I thought. The high melee (+27, +27) helps with accuracy, and a lightning brand on an 8d5 vorpal weapon ain't half bad. I'm giving up immunity to Cold, Fire and Lightning with this kit, but immunities are only slightly better than double resistances ... at least that is what I keep telling myself. My compensation is an incredible 5 attacks! Its enough to take down the likes of Azriel and Pazuzu while I continue to gather -Rockets (4) and -Disintegrate (7).

Still, I'm 42% accurate vs. AC200 with Blessing and Heroism. Something like Fingolfin or Cambeleg would really, really, really, really help about now!

Happy Ringil! Well, damage output is considerably diminished, but I'm continuing to gather Rockets, which I think I will indulge in for the end game. I'm up to 7 wands of rockets, and I'd like 20 or so.

In the mean time, I really hate monsters that Heal Self. A single spell of Heal Self equals about 3 rounds of melee for me, so the result is I spend 2x as many turns battling off that final star than I do the previous 9 stars! Well, I need to start using my rockets more ...

I'm up to 11 -Rockets now. They come in bunches ... what is that, 4 in 10 minutes or so?

For posterity: The way to kill Combat Echizen with a Life HM is -Disintegrate. Really, I don't think there is any other possible way. I tried melee with Ringil (taking off Thorin for extra accuracy) and after 50 rounds of battle, he was unwounded. Even with -Disintegrate, it is tough, as he heals or goes invulnerable quite frequently, but I got him!

So, there are now 6 remaining wanted uniques ...

Great Cthulhu is down! Man, was that a tough battle. When your accuracy is below 50% and you only have 3 attacks, I don't care if your weapon is Ringil or not. You will have a damn tough time versus this guy. Probably 300+ rounds of melee to kill the Great One, and another 1000-2000 rounds spent healing, dealing with summons, and tracking him down after teleports! My big mistake was not to bring my arsenal of Rockets. He's got 10,000hp, and those 400hp rockets would have really outshined my poor melee performance. But, duh, he drains charges. So me fight him toe to toe ... Stupid!

There is no way I am taking the Serpent down with melee!

The Destroyer is down. What a beast!! I only had half the fire power I wanted, but I simply got tired of this guy showing up all the time to bug me. I figured Warding True and melee. Nope, he breathes disintegrate too often for that to be effective. OK, just straight melee then. Well, that's 50+ rounds per star, and I managed 3 stars that way, healing every 2 to 3 rounds, and teleporting him away whenever my mana ran out. At that point, I decided to begin my magical device assault with distance disintegration. Hey, that's much quicker. 37 charges at 250 a pop is 9250 damage. Almost 30% of his hitpoints. Let's try Rockets next ... Even better! 39 charges at 400 a pop is 15600 damage. So I must have managed over 5k in melee, not counting his regeneration. I figure I was only good for less than 100 damage per round that way ... sigh.

Need more Rockets :D

After dispensing with the annoying Dungeon Guardians (Great Cthulhu, Vecna and Null, all of which are charge drainers), I used the Trump Tower to teleport down to DL98 of Angband, and promptly whooped Oberon.

For the final battle, I have only one word: Easy. I was surprised by how well Warding True protected me from summons, and there is nothing quite like the message: "The Serpent Summons Unique Monsters" followed by a silence so profound, you might almost here those DL100 crickets chirping. And its not that all the uniques had been slain already. No, at least 145 were left for the Serpent's amusement. But by and large, the Serpent's answer for my runes was his trusty disintegration breath, always ready at times of need, and I had to handle my fair share of summoned baddies.

But nobody was able to drain my charges, and I rolled thru 60 rockets without incident. That's only 24,000 damage, the Serpent has 30k, and regenerates 5-10k during the course of the battle, so rather than fall back on the slower Disintegrate attack, I delved into my large stash of ?Recharging. Nary a wand was consumed by the ordeal, and I generally got back 5 or more charges on each read. 7 ?Recharging was enough to complete the endeavor, and I was never put in any sort of real danger. Morgoth only made one appearance, and Shuma-Gorath none.

Oh, Oberon dropped Amber, and I guess I should have swapped back to my Ring of Speed +13 rather than my ring of power or Tulkas. Oh, well, better do this guy over :D
