Well, here we go again. A good start. First two stat rolls went to Con and I found out at CL20 that I have a high intrinsic Int (18 -> 18/50!).

My play went Thieve's Q then Sewer to level up to 19. Skip Logrus master and Vault and jump into the Tower. Kill what I can to gather gold (I forgot to scum Farmer) then scum for a Ring of Warning with ESP animals. It took a long time to find one, but it is really important as it allows quick detection of the two monsters you want to find in the Tower: Granite Walls and Quartz Veins.

I did Granite Walls to CL30, and now I am doing Quartz Veins. I need to be careful as Grendel is still alive on this level and could surprise kill me! Its harder to get gold as a spellcaster, though ...

Super scummy. I'd like to stop, but just can't seem to resist! The big takes so far are PDSM, Armageddon Tome and a RoS +7. However, I can't seem to level up. I'd like to attempt the Cloning Pits, but ideally, I'd like to be CL36 so that I could do some damage with Magic Rocket. At the moment, I'd probably have to use Doom Bolt for something like 80 damage per round, and would probably just fail the quest. Maybe I'll go try the deep water to see if I can get some xp that way ...

OK, Lesser Krakens are worth 31,764 xp. However, with the wilderness xp biff, I only net about 6,000 xp on killing one. I've killed 3 so far. Should I level up this way?

[CL33:Node of Chaos] 03:40
Nah! Deep water is too risky with too little reward. Attempting to kill 25-30 Lesser Krakens to gain 1 level hardly seems worth it. So, I went for the Node of Chaos with *ample* supplies. -2 speed from encumbrance, so I still need to scum some strength boosting shooter and/or gloves, I think.

Eat magic is very unreliable at this level. I've blown up 10 or so rods so far ...

[CL36:Old Castle] 05:16
OK, I think I have completed all the quests I am going to. The Warg Quest is undoable since I can't enter the Yeek Cave, and that blocks the remaining quests (Haunted House and Royal Crypt) from the first town. Other remaining quests include Eric's Stronghold and the Spawning Pits, neither of which I feel particularly up to.

So, am I ready to enter DL1? My only regrets are the lack of a good artifact shooter (plusses to str and con) and good artifact gloves (ditto). Maybe I'll scum a just a little bit more ...

And here I was feeling guilty! 1671 game days of scumming? Wow :-).

I have never found the Zul quests to be open on previous chars - have not yet tried with this one, but is this a difference in 1.7 perhaps? Or am I doing something wrong - likely!

You can do the Node of Nature Quest only if you can cast Nature spells, the Node of Chaos Quest only if you can cast Chaos spells, and the Node of Sorcery Quest only if you can cast Sorcery spells. The reward will be the 4th book in the respective realm. I think your nature monk will want to do that quest when ready!

For day counts, 1671 is pretty low. If you check out the impetus for this character here:
http://www.kmc.gr.jp/~habu/local/hengscore-en/showdump.cgi?5245

You will see that the day count is:
Time Day ***** 15:30

And the best I can figure, that is more than 100,000 days of scumming! Best I can tell, that character built 135,050,901 gp by *selling food*. Sort of warms my OCD heart ...

In! This time I left my home stocked. Its just too much work to empty my house and I might accidentally lose something I need.

Encumbrance is an issue. I am -2 speed ...

Go!

Good luck :). You're certainly *way* better stocked than I am to date - not surprising - and now I am wondering whether I should take this scumming more seriously...

...probably not; just don't have the patience, I suspect.

I ran the early quests until Druaga and then Fiona. This last hit me with a Blood Curse. My resistance had run out and I was standing on the floor rather than inside a wall, but she had begun her cowardice, and I didn't want to have to hunt her down again. So, she cursed, but no monsters got summoned. And "Sacred Knights got its first use. Really, for this build, that amulet is essential!

Fire is annoying ... probably, I should have brought =Flames after all, but shuffling rings around is so freakin' annoying. So, I'll just keep destructing all that can destroy my stuff (unless it is a quest monster).

I need to pause and level up to CL40 for the Mana Storm. I already killed a Venom Wyrm with rockets, so this should be doable.

This is going to be hard ... real hard. First, I need to overcome my own stupidity. During my last attempt I had planned to build caches of goodies stored in the dungeon that I could return to for restocking. However, how could I ever get back? There are no up stairs, after all ... Pure stupidity. Now I learn that Alter Reality does not work. Damn, I was counting on that to preserve my depth so that I could level up and acquire resources. So, to recap, no up stairs. No word of recall. No alter reality. You can only go down. If I had to guess, then the Stair Creation spell only ever creates down stairs, and perhaps ?TeleportLevel doesn't work at all? Or if it does, it only drops you *down* ... I haven't tried this last one out, but I bet that would have a been a further surprise in store for my last character versus the Destroyer. Nasty!

So, I must now thoroughly explore every level if ever I am to level up. Resting on a level too long will just deplete my food reserves ... We'll see if this is doable! I'm about to get a big swing in offensive prowess, so perhaps things will look up after that.

Can you not eat corpses in Heng?

On 3.6.2010 17:35 chris wrote:
Never tried ... Seems macabre, feasting on the dead. Actually, food-wise, I'm not too bad. Wands and staves are common and I have Arcane Binding to recharge as well. So, I'll give the rest 3000 turns thing a try to see if it works out ...

On 3.6.2010 17:52 chris wrote:
Nope, you cannot eat corpses unless you are a Balrog. However, I'm working thru a level with a nice vault. By the time I cleared the vault, I had a dozen staves and wands of various crap. So, I've made a nice cache of food safely tucked away in my safe zone and here I shall make a tremendous stand, resting to allow monsters to spawn. I think I was too cautious about my food reserves before and that this will actually work nicely. I'm CL39 at DL60. I'm staying here until CL45 when I will have a 0% Mana Storm!

Resting doesn't work! Man, these developers thought of everything, it seems. Nothing but shallow monsters get generated! I got nothing but Orcs and Light Hounds and such, despite nearly 100,000 turns of resting.

Bad news. I gained Mana Storm, and learned it up to Master with a 14% fail before using it. But 2 out of my first 3 attempts failed, both mutated me, and I picked up the Albino mutation (-4 Con). Sigh ... Looks like I'll be facing the Serpent with 550hp or so. Unless I can get Tulkas, Dwarves and Cambeleg, at which point happiness will resume!

A Bubble Vault. Craziness! Cambeleg, Brand, and Grawswandir have combined to give me awesome speed and reasonable hitpoints (I took out 2 Cyberdemons with only 450hp before this, and man, that is tough!). High level kills of Carcharoth, Mephistopheles, Cyaegha, The Emperor Q, and Atlach-Nacha. Midling kills of Dworkin (no Jewel) and Brand (Werewindle ... I already snagged his crossbow in the vault). Epic battles with aforementioned Cyberdemons and a Spectral Wyrm who brought forth many dragons to play with. A Greater Dragonic Q started that mess, and I'll keep him alive for some abuse!

Failed Mana Storms gave 4 more mutations including Harden to Elements! Nuff said ...

Boy, I entered this level a loooooong time ago. It is hard to believe I was only CL40 at the time with something like 456hp! After my last post at CL42, I switched back to using rockets exclusively in order to avoid any more mutations (like Vulnerability to the Elements!). The notable exception was to kill Tiamat who required Mana Storms to vanquish, but I survived that unscathed (genetically speaking). But now, at last, I gain 0% fail on my Mana Storm, locking in the double resistance mutation which is oh so important. I can swap to Hammerhand (found in that Bubble Vault I cleared a couple hours ago) and put down my stash of !Resistance. Now, I just want Laputa to protect me from the Moron mutation which will show up sooner or later.

Dragons will die a whole lot quicker now to the Storm!

In this build, failing a quest is not an option. If you draw a monster you cannot handle, then you must die! All quest levels are battles to the Death! So, when I drew the Unicorn of Order for my DL88 quest, my heart sank ... Until I remembered who and what I was! A Chaos HM is the ultimate Unicorn slayer. Nobody else does better ... Nobody!

Only one summon by the horned beastie and that was for Bahamut and entourage (I'd like to see a Death HM deal with that!) Simple to destruct, after luring the Unicorn away.

By and large, logrus breath for 700+hp. Not a single Mana Storm. I used a few healing, though, but that is to be expected.

Wimp!

I'm trying desperately to time things so that I am CL50 for the final battle. We'll see how that goes. In the mean time, my speed as become respectable at +44 base (-2 encumbrance) +54 hasted. With my fire power, that should easily be enough.

I'm also trying to get the uber nasties first. Yog-sothoth and Nyarlathotep are down, but many remain, including Loki, Sauron, Azathoth, Shub-Niggurath, Shuma-Gorath, The Destroyer, etc. Probably, I will just have to hope for luck when it comes to the Serpent's summons.

Well, thank goodness I didn't screw that up as I felt like this would be my last chance at an Ironman Downward win. The battle was easy, and I had the resources. I just needed to be very careful since my hp were so low. If the Serpent breathed disintegration, I generally teleported, and definitely if he dispelled magic to boot. Still, my 500hp Mana Storms whittled him down, and I was able to complete my task just as The Destroyer gained line of sight! My response? Teleport Away then Call the Void. No sense continuing once the big J is down ...

I was extremely lucky to buy a suit of PDSM in the Black Market. Even with all the scumming I do, this is only the second time that has happened!

Key Points in this Game:
[1] PDSM
[2] Bubble Vault at DL61
[3] Picking up Harden to Elements Mutation
[4] Finding Greater Dragonic Q at DL61
[5] Surviving Loki's sneak attack off-screen Mana Storm by just 27hp

Without these, I don't think I would have made it!
