I think they cannot become cursed, they're generated either cursed or not, and don't change from that. A cursed rod has a chance of exploding when used.

Well thats a shame. Being able to uncurse usable items should probably be put into the game.

^ Cursed magical devices is one of...ahem....the balancing surprises, imo
My best try at PosChengband 7.0.0's nightmare-mode on Angband.live:

If I'm offline I'm probably in the middle of maintaining Gentoo or something-Linux or other.

So I have a ring of the dwarves which says
          It is Permanently Cursed.
Does that mean I'm stuck with it for the rest of the game? Any super special uncurse? (*Remove Curse*) scroll did not work. Playing 4.0.1.

I was doing the wield then uncurse with {awful} items for cash as I wasn't at the stage where cash was no longer an issue. Don't think I'll be doing that again...

Scrolls of Mundanity will blast an item back to its base type, removing the curse in the process. (This basically destroys the item.)

You can find a stack of these early as a prize in the Telmora arena fights. They're pretty rare otherwise, it seems.

Wow, this ring is terrible. It PERMANENTLY drains experience. As in the Max Exp is also drained, so Restore Live levels has no effect. Basically a garaunteed slow death. Booo.

I'll go try this arena thing you mentioned. Although be the time I walk there I don't know what level I'll be, already down from 21 to 17.

Edit: Well did the arena up to a stone Giant and lost. So it seems daying in the arena doesn't count. But he won't let me back in. Is there a timeout, or have I done my dash there. No scrolls so far, only drops were potions of speed and a rod of detect traps.

Drain exp usually is slow enough that killing monsters will easily stay ahead. I'm surprised it is bad enough that you notice it anywhere but wilderness travel.

Nope, after the arena I was down to lev 15.
Recalled to Dungeon (orc caves). By the time I died I was Lev 8. Dump here:

This isn't true in poschengband. It's a constantly ticking clock that will drain a ton of xp if you're not staying ahead of it. It's not like XP drain in vanilla. (restore life doesn't fix it, and hold life doesn't help.) I'm not sure but I think the mechanic and the severity changed again in 4.0.x?

You were pretty much screwed. When you lose in the arena you can't go back. I think you learned the hard way not to wield {awful} things before IDing them.

*identify* makes this pretty terrible in the early game, which is why I play a version where it doesn't exist. However, the vast majority of {awful} things are never going to be worth wielding.

Nothing changed in 4.0.x. I spent 18 months deliberately achieving nothing.

Depends. If it's perma-cursed (like that one was) yes. If not, I use Nazgul rings quite regularly & just remove them for town & wilderness. You'd want to be above clvl 15 to start with though, otherwise you can't kill hard enough targets fast enough.

Thanks for the tips above. My own fault...

                            New question.
I have a Staff of Detect traps, and it appears to be auto casting when I reach the edge of the detect traps boundary. In 3.4.x this did not happen (although then I always had rods, not staves to detect traps).
Is this normal? Is there an option to turn it off? I like the warning because I usually do traps, doors, and monsters each time.

I meant poscheng 4.0.x. Unlike some slovenly maintainers, chris actually achieves things with his major releases.

Yeah, I meant if you can't take it off.
