My second-ever character (first died *very* rapidly) so totally lacking in optimal skill point usage and so on; but saved basically by finding Mormegil, whose first kill was a bone golem that gave it a bunch of levels and +4 attacks. That was the main melee weapon from then on, despite the negatives. One of the consequences of messing up skills was that bowfire neverr got as powerful as it might have, and I only ever made the one set of artifact ammo, so while it was OK for most creatures (and esp. dragons), tough uniques basically required hand-to-hand combat (which also minimised summons. One thing bwfire was good for was ringwraiths, avoiding getting mormegil disenchanted (because I wanted especially to be able to keep Divine Aim going, so needed not to have an antimagic field too strong around me).

I guess the other luck was in the no-teleport corruption. I had no idea at the time how useful that would be (and only found out from the forum that it was controllable!).

Anyway, I was happy to win at my second attempt, with a totally nonoptimal character.

While your skill point allocation wasn't optimal, it was probably closer to ideal than you might have realized. IMO, your two main skillpoint problems were - A) Lack of princess quests for FF rewards. Taking lots of optional quests makes the late game much more difficult and much slower but it does also give you many more skillpoints to work with; and B) Ranger skill point modifiers kind of suck compared to other classes, so your skills were never going to be that great anyway.

IMHO, Rangers are the second weakest class after Bard.
