Another entry in the Jack-of-all-Trades contest. Dunedain Skeleton Demonologist, trying to win with no skills above 25.

Into the low 80s in Angband and he's starting to have trouble. He just tangled with the Mouth of Sauron a couple times and was lucky to have survived both times.

Resistance holes are a problem, as is his low speed. He can wield Gothmog's demonblade, to improve his damage output, but Maehdros is his main source of FA, so it requires him to also swap in Gorlim which isn't something you can do lightly. For big uniques, he'll also swap his drums for Beor and then swap amulets so as to keep rNether, though it costs him telepathy. So, in a nutshell, I guess his kit is still a problem as well.

On 19.1.2005 15:10 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Just barely hanging on, and if not for Turgon, he'd be totally dead. Terror made it down to the bottom of Angband (thanks mostly to some really easy princess quest monsters and a bunch of FF quests, all of which he skipped), and then made it up to the top of Mt Doom.

After recalling from Mt Doom, he couldn't recall back into Angband and begin hunting Sauron for the One Ring, so he trotted over to Angband, went down to level 67, and read a word of recall scroll. The level had a FF quest for GWoL and in a move of spectacular stupidity, I had Terror wander away from the stairs.

It was a very small level and all the worms are packed into two smallish rooms with nowhere to hide. They immediately start beating on Terror and summoning Ancient Dragons. He's next to a wall, though, and uses Nain to dig a little alcove, which means that at least SOME of the GWoL and their summons can't see him. Terror makes his stand, hacking away at the Wyrms. Gothmog's sword really comes in handy as it occasionally teleports a Wyrm away or drains life, both of which help a lot.

So he's trying not to kill them, just knock them down to 1 or 2 stars, so that he'll be surrounded by damaged wyrms that don't do nearly as much damage with their breath. The tactic works ok, but there are too many of them. Finally, his potions are gone, and he's down to about 60% health left. Hmm. Is this it for Terror? While considering his options, I notice that he only needs about 80K exp to make the next level. That would be nice to do before he dies. What level is he now? 44. Hmm, wait a minute... AH HA!

Terror quickly finishes off a couple badly injured Wyrms that are right next to him, and then its a race to see if he can kill that GWoT before his HP runs out. And with 200 hp left, the wyrm goes down, Terror levels, and right on que, *POOF*, the thunderlord appears. Uh, yes, I think I would be EXTREMELY willing to see Turgon right now. I've never been so glad to see that quest.

On 20.1.2005 17:49 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Killed Maeglin who thoughtfully dropped a randart ring with +3 attacks, rNether, AND FA, which lets Terror swap Beor for his drums and upgrade to Gothmog's sword for his primary weapon (Maedhros had been his source of FA, so he also had to use Gorlim whenever he needed to use Gothmog. The extra damage was nice, but it'd really rather save it for the really big battles). So Terror is now a little faster, can cast his spells a little more often, and does a little more damage (mostly from Gothmog>Maedhros. The +3 attacks is only very slightly better than the +21 damage from his other ring).

Terror has, unfortunately, also confirmed that not only is Sauron on top of Mt Doom (much more annoying to fight him there. I think he's at the opening of that long, thin hallway across the northern part of the level), but also everything is awake in that rectangular room that usually has a bunch of hugely nasty monsters, despite Terror's great stealth (I think something friendly appeared in there and started attacking things. Thanks, pal.), so he's going to have to wade through a bunch of tough uniques just to get to Sauron.

Neat escape from the wyrms there, and good luck with Mt. Doom. Just one question, though - why the rod of perception when you have the Helm of Knowledge?

On 20.1.2005 21:34 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Thanks. I was happy with it. Having both the helm and the rod can save a turn sometimes, which can be really valuable. Probably not valuable enough to warrant an inventory slot, but Terror doesn't pick much up these days.

On 20.1.2005 21:39 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
When did the top of Mt Doom stop being persistent? Terror went back to look for Sauron and the whole level was reset, so he slogged part way through until he could detect everything on the level. No Sauron. At least all the uniques were asleep.

In added aggravation, Terror has been bouncing back and forth between 99 and 100 in Angband for a while, and Sauron has yet to show his face. It always used to be that, if you didn't have the ring yet, Sauron showed up pretty much every time you went to 99.

Now, I can't find him anywhere. Is this another change or do I have a problem?

On 20.1.2005 23:17 ryan483 at bluebottle.com wrote:
I think there's a thread on the forum about Sauron not appearing. Apparently, (from what I read) if you recall from Mt. Doom without killing Sauron, he disappears from the map. I think that since he's already generated alive in this case, he won't be in Angband.

On 21.1.2005 13:34 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Looks like Terror is SOL unless Ar-Pharazon has it, and he'll have to find water breathing to get there. Sigh.

On 21.1.2005 16:26 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Sauron was never generated again because of the Mt Doom non-persistence bug, and none of the other potential ring bearers had it, so Terror can no longer win.

I prefer to think that the forces of Morgoth, fearful of Terror's power, chose to withdraw from Middle Earth rather than face him.

Very unsatisfying.
