Another subterrainean character. So close, and then, BAM. He was doing great and looking like a strong bet to go the distance when a Nightcrawler and some bad luck both on Mount Doom level 90 doomed him.

After a big battle, he had almost no mana left and the only monster left was this stupid Nightcrawler with just 1 star left. Rather than trying to beat it to death with his mage staff, I had him switch to the Law Dragon scale mail so he could use its breath attack to finish it off. It would cost him his fire immunity, but only for two moves. How much trouble could that cause?

As he switches armor, the Nightcrawler hits him and gives him the Black Breath and simultaneously, his Tome of Translocation, his only source of recall, burns up. AAAARRRGGHH. The breath attack did indeed kill the Nightcrawler, but the damage was done.

He spent the rest of the climb unsuccessfully hunting for rod tips of recall, scrolls of recall, or tomes of translocation.

Found Sauron at the top and killed him, and though he didn't drop the One Ring or anything with recall, he did drop the Rod Tip of Home Summoning. That provided a nifty end run around not being able to go into town. The rod tip brought the town to him.

Sadly, he got into trouble not long after that. After killing a big mass of Pit Fiends and Nycodaemons, he was almost out of mana and got cornered by a GWoMC and the one remaining Nycodaemon. Compounding my desperation after the loss of the Tome was that I was trying to win in under 24 hours (about 6 hours of actual game time). With only an hour left, I started playing very aggressively and that's always trouble.

Oh, subterrainean means that he started as a Lost Soul and has to go all the way through the game staying underground as much as possible. No going into towns at all, except to talk to Galadriel after killing the Necromancer. Dungeon towns would be ok, but unless he runs into one in Mandos he won't be seeing any since he's only going to hit Angband and then Mordor to get to Mt Doom.

Interesting sling he got off Gothmog. I assume its a Randart that wasn't named for some reason. It was quite a surprise at the time, spotting an otherwise unexceptional sling that gave a +4 to speed.

Ok, last try. This guy came together quite nicely, and he's lucked into an exceptional number of CON enchancing items. His actual CON is 10, the rest is from equipment.

Mt. Doom is half-cleared to pry out Sauron, and the hunt for the One Ring continues in Angband. The weird thing is that Futility2 has killed Sauron either 6 or 7 times, and still no ring. The Necromancer is quite dead, and he definitely talked to Galadriel.

Could the One Ring in fact be with Glaurung or Feagwath? Is the location of the One Ring determined at the start of each game, so no matter how many times I bump off Sauron he'll never drop it? Perplexing.

After killing Sauron for the 8th or 9th time and still no ring, I thought maybe someone else had it. After side trips to Cirith Ungol, Erebore, Sacred Land of Mountains, and the Paths of the Dead (thank heavens for Probability Travel or I wouldn't have even tried. The level jumping ability didn't work in SLoM for some reason, but since the stairs were around the edges, it was easy to jump to them so it was almost as fast), it was clear that either Sauron or Ar-Pharazon had it. Since I didn't have Water Breathing, I was really hoping for Sauron, so back to Angband. I also found my first dungeon town down on SLoM 68 and managed to steal a better ring of speed than the one Futility2 was carrying around. Glaurung coughed up Cubragol, which was the last big item Futility2 was looking for. Bye, bye Beor.

Naturally, Sauron gave up the ring on the next try. However, a problem was emerging. Thanks to all the running around between dungeons (and some earlier running in place with a dragon corpse to get in good with Eru), Futility2 was down to 6 scrolls of satisfy hunger and had to trek down to Mordor, climb back up to the peak of Mt Doom, and then run back to Angband. Might have to do some jackal hunting on the way.

On the way down, I realized that as long as Futility2 didn't use recall in Mordor/Mt Doom, he could recall straight from the outside of Mordor to level 99 on Angband once he was done with Mt Doom.

So, probability travel back down through Mordor. Mt Doom blocks it, so a quick hike back up to the summit, and Futility2 was ready to finish clearing the summit.

While you can't teleport on the summit, you CAN swap places with things, using either Flare or the Recall spell (somehow, I had never realized Recall allows you to swap places, just like Flare, only better because the interface is different, eliminating LoS issues). Futility2 was in the room where Sauron usually shows up and waited until a monster was by itself in the top left corner of the room of the Great Fire (all the rest of the monsters were packed into the depression on the left side of the room, trying to get to Futility2), to minizime LoS. A quick destruction spell cleared some room (Annoyingly, Futility2 never got a single wall create spell. On the other hand, I had somehow managed to play dozens of thaumaturges without realizing destruction spells act as mini-mass genocide spells which DO work on special levels. Well, the top of Mt Doom, at least. Its my new favorite spell, along with recall.).

Boom goes the ring, swap places with a monster back near the stairs, and a quick trek back down Mt Doom to Mordor. Probability travel back up through Mordor to the outside, and Futility2 can finall recall back into Angband. Jeez, that was a lot of running around just to save some food.

Back in Angband, Sauron went down quickly, and Morgoth wasn't much harder thanks to the wonder of being able to create void gates.

That was a fun challenge. Futility2 only went into towns twice, once to talk to Galadriel, and once when I accidentally accepted the Magelin quest. He never went into a town store, did a town quest, or got a house, surviving just on what he could carry and the scrolls he started with as a Lost Soul.
