I wanted to wait until I found a good enough launcher before putting points into a sub-mastery, but I also didn't want to go with sling for no particular reason. Naturally, the first good launcher to fall into my lap ends up being Thain. I thought I'd find a good crossbow or bow before finding the only sling artifact, but that's how it turned out.

The last 8 or so levels of Mirkwood were criminally generous. My biggest needs were melee weapon and shield (was using a low-end defender pike and barely enchanted shield), and over the course of 6 or 8 levels I find Sting, Thorin, Gothmog's shield (for variety), a Ring of Speed +7, and boots of speed +8. Things had been going well up to that point, and after that they went even better.
