As you can see, Maeglin himself was already dead -- all I wanted to do was pick up my shots/pebbles and leave! :-( (I was also severely hindered by losing 15 of my pebbles when I hit level 45 in the middle of a Bile Demon swordsman quest in the dungeon of Mordor, and decided to accept the quest, leaving the pebbles behind.)
