Manathrust did not deal enough damage to take out high level monsters. With less than 1000 hp I couldn't survive a long battle. Even after stat gain I was around 400 hp until I covered all of my resistances and could go with a flipped Amulet of Doom. The middle game was very challenging and I got resurrected once by Eru.
Fireflash and Stinking Cloud worked for most evil monsters but not for the top uniques like Ancalagon.
