Holy shit. I'm glad I never got into a tight spot in a vault On the other hand *Destruction* helps clear the trash away so that you can just pick out the artifacts...

Yeah, make sure you have a good grasp on where the borders of a vault are as well. I was in a moat area or some other kind of intermediate place between the dungeon and a vault once and didn't realize that area was also protected from *destruct* and bit the dust to Chaos hounds once. On the upside, themed levels are not protected and you can *destruct* away.

I had the most wonderful dream last night. I found a staff that increased the sides of the damage dice on weapons. I activated it several times and got Calris up to 3d21. It worked like recharging or remove curse... if it failed to enchant properly the item would be destroyed. Every time I went to use it I was shown the percentage chance it would work. The staff was not named, but I think it would've been called the Staff of Wishful Thinking.
I guess my subconscious is also obsessed with honking nasty weapons. I like big damage die and I cannot lie...
      You are on something strange

Actually I'd rather have speed than damage dice. I haven't found any artifact boots yet...

You'll always find enough speed eventually in a game, but a really big damage dice weapon is a rarity. You may or may not know that criticals in O-based combat increase the number of dice of your weapon for that attack - therefore bigger dice makes a huge difference. That's why Forasgil at 1d12 is such a powerful early weapon.

I was trying to compile 1.1 under Debian (chroot in Maemo 5). Configure and make didn't throw any error messages. But I couln't get both the x11 and the SDL modes working.

            In x11, the error is
            Code:
            Couldn't load requested font. (8x16x).
In SDL, the first screen loads, but when I pressed any key to enter the character dialogs the game quit and show this error
            Code:
ALSA lib dlmisc.c:236:(snd1_dlobj_cache_get) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_alsa_dsp.so
./faangband: Couldn't open mixer: No available audio device
./faangband: Failed to load sound config
./faangband: Cannot create the '/root//.angband/FAangband/scores/scores.raw' file!
./faangband: The 'lib' directory is probably missing or broken.
./faangband: Perhaps the archive was not extracted correctly.
./faangband: See the 'README' file for more information.
            ./faangband: Fatal Error.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The font is read either from the x11-settings.prf file in the lib/user directory or (more probably) the ~/.angband/FAangband directory, or the environment variable ANGBAND_X11_FONT_0 - I'm guessing the former

It is starting to look like your private user paths are an issue - I suspect because it doesn't want to write the .angband directory in /root. I don't know enough about chroot in Maemo to give better info, I'm afraid.

How does one use the Rod of Portals? It asks you to choose a location and then when you pick a square...nothing. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

It seems to work fine for me. Are you getting an error message?

I guess what I should ask is how do I use it?

On zapping, you should get to choose a grid to teleport to. It can't be too far away, and must be passable and not contain a monster or be in a vault. It can fail randomly, but on any failure you should get a failure message and be teleported.

I find the recharge time on it is too high for me to actually dedicate a slot to it.

Recharge it by spell, yes it takes two turns, but in final fight it is cool to avoid danger.

That's good thinking. I never recharge rods by spell because of the risks, but hadn't thought about the indestructible artifact rods.

Hit * then o (much like look or targeting) then use the arrow keys to choose a location. Press 5 to select. This is general information, not specific to this item.
