I encountered an oddity while searching for a secret door (very likely not unique to FA). In short, I descended into a new level into a room with no doors. As I searched for a door, a (closed) door suddenly appeared out of my line of sight (I was standing on the chute when the door to the left appeared). One turn later, a blue yeek walked through the door. I'm assuming that the blue yeek 'found' the secret door, and that is why it appeared on the map, though it seems odd that it would appear out of line of sight, and odd again that it took the yeek only one turn to both open the door and walk into the doorway.
EDIT: and then a few turns later I heard a door burst open, which also appeared on my map, out of line of sight.

just wanted to chime in and say that i'm loving FA..it's been my rogue like of choice for the last few months. always thought it looked cool, but found the wilderness a little confusing and the fact that different races started on different character levels offputting. dungeon mode solves that perfectly the somewhat higher difficulty level (compared to V) is appreciated, and the implementation and sophistication of features is really impressive overall.
a couple small issues/thoughts:
the new jewelry system is very cool, but definitely needs a bit more balancing, particularly in terms of activations (as someone mentioned earlier in the thread). in addition, activations don't seem to factor into the price of jewely, so you can purchase some items with quite powerful activations very early on. so it can be like purchasing a rod of perception or acid balls for 100 gold at cl10. the curse system is pretty darn brilliant, however (and i hope V takes some cues from your work).
i could be wrong, but it seems that different classes and races all level at the same rate. maybe this makes more sense in wilderness mode, when different races' starting CLs and environments dictate difficulty and play style, but it seems a little odd in dungeon mode when a hobbit warrior levels just as quickly as a high elf ranger.
the other thing which puzzles me a bit about FA in general is the racial stat bonuses - namely the INT/WIS dwarf/elf switch. this is cool in some ways, and sometimes makes more sense (rangers using wisdom as their spellcasting stat), but in general, makes several of the most classic character builds less viable - namely the elf/hobbit rogue and the dwarf paladin. a stealthless rogue and a frail paladin are significantly less appealing. i assume this is a deliberate move (and would be curious to hear the rationale behind it, beyond faithfulness to the source material), but the end result i find is that there is lack of +INT races, making for very few good races for a rogue build, or even mage build, really. if dark elves had an intelligence bonus instead of a wisdom bonus (they are described as intelligent in their racial description), that might help even things out.

Yes, there will certainly be more balancing needed. And you're right, activations aren't in the price - I hadn't thought of that. They are accounted for in generation.

This is inherited from O, and I agree with it. Some races/classes are easier than others - that's fine.

The main reason is thematic - and thematically, elf paladin and dwarf rogue fit much better, IMHO. Agreed there are not so many +INT races, although you have missed petty-dwarves and high elves. Rogues don't really need INT so much - stealth, device skill and even infravision are probably more important. On the whole, I think the balance is certainly different from the traditional one, but I'm not unhappy with it.
