I may be misreading what you are saying, but please be aware that unlike Vanilla, there is no town at the gates of Angband...

It is not that you are underpowered to move forward (that short sword of melting is a very nice early find), but unless you are playing some sort of challenge game, you want to pay a visit to Mim in Amon Rudh first.

I sometimes make a few runs back and forth across Thargellion 11 when I first get to Belegost in the hope of a few Wilderness vaults - that can often produce some nice equipment or at least generate some more cash.

Personally, I usually traverse Amon Rudh during the nighttime hours, and work the wilderness during the day. It will increase the number of recalls you use, but it's effective. The wilderness at night is a killer unless you're overpowered.

During the day it's a killer :-) Thargelion during the day is rough. I'll stick to sleeping in my home and locking the door during the night for a few more levels!

I moved back south a bit, to Ossiriand Town. Glad I did ... in two 'boring' areas I came across a Ring of Combat (+8) and a Ring of Basic Resistance (frost). That'll help!

I was wondering what happens if you step off a cliff while wearing a ring of feather falling? I'm guessing that you should be okay, but I'm not willing to die to test this out.

I don't think that FF protects you from cliffs. That said, walking off a cliff won't kill you, or at least it never killed me. There is only one way off the mountain (besides TL, WoR).

FF halves your damage (which is not enormous - at least when it's just one cliff ). Also, there is sometimes a down staircase off Mountain Tops.

I was wondering what were the main differences as compared to V, I ask because I notice that the damage system works differently. I feel like you get less damage per + to dam than you would in V. What else is different other than the obvious stuff like the outdoors stuff or the resist precentages?

                    Thanks again.

In V, you get damage dice x (slay or brand) + to_d - so often the +to_d swamps damage dice considerations.
In FA (and also O, Z, S and some other variants) every point in the to_d counts as 5% of your damage dice (essentially) - so damage dice are much more important and +to_d less so.

The other big difference is in monster AI. FA (along with O, S, NPP at least) have what is known as 4GAI, which essentially means that monsters are smarter at spellcasting and pathfinding.

I did notice that summoners were more likely to summon: ( Which makes it realy hard to attack things like the ickyness. Hell even Priest tend to summon like crazy. I guess FA really is the game to play when V starts to feel a bit stale.

So long as you have decent AC, the Ickiness is an easy kill. It runs out of mana fast, and you can deal with the summons later.

In any case, ickies are EMPTY_MIND, so there's no AI. It summons a lot because it only has a single spell.

Hmm, I guess I'm too used to V where AC isn't that important in the beginning of the game. Also evading seems to help, so I've been going for lighter armor.

BTW I notice that the longer I play the less I can pick pockets for...is it just me? I've noticed this happening as I level up and it isn't just one on level. I'll be able to pick pockets on each level, its just that the drops suck even if I stick to dwarves...

Terrain is good for more than just looking at. Use it to your advantage.
