    An 8d10 +12 weapon doesn't need slays or brands to be ruinously effective.

      Yeah, that is a hell of a weapon--roughly 60 damage just from the weapon alone. It's worth noting that the standard artifact set has no off-weapon brands/attacks either, so it's roughly comparable to everything except Deathwreaker, at least in killing power.

        this randart set i'm playing now is inundating me with pConf, i have like, 8 items with it. I also found an endgame weapon on DL20, and i haven't used anything else since:
        the Beaked Axe of Curion (4d6) (+13,+24) [+21] <+3>

        Random polearm of power 276.

        note the !Life activation every 250 turns.

          I believe the biggest advantage with randarts is min level tends to be favorable compared to std arts for strong items. Not a huge skew but adding 10 levels would be reasonable.

            yes and no;

            no, because you are not likely to find any artifact before DL30. finding a Dethanc in the standart set means you are ok for weapons until midgame, and don't have to worry about not being able to do enough damage to mobs you should otherwise be easily destroying.

            yes, because things like Rings Of Power become a daily occurrence.



            randarts are almost always more powerful than standarts; the standart set is pretty much balanced, there's a couple of very strong weapons, but that's about it. in a randart set, you will find lots of garbage, but then you get stuff like this Ring Of Slaying here:

              Indeed, with 305SP this will be a jiff on this scythe tailor made for Sauron and Tensers (which I have ). Scythe of Nedhrieno (9d4) (+10, +6) 463 vs non rAcid, 202 vs others. Activates for TO; 270-330 turns at +20 speed, 98.1% success rate, sorta useless recharge time but good to save it for really scary things (not really any anymore with legendary stealth and 685HP, tho).

              Ninja edit: just after I posted this (from killing Ji Indur Dawndeath summoned by greater rot Q) I carelessly forgot about the Q (and that I don't have SI) and then blasted (with Buckland and Tensers) a Demi Lich it summoned and it just dropped this:

              The Unholy Trinity Bastard sword of Naras (8d4) (+8, +25) <+1> INT

              *Slays* Dragons, Demons, Undead (powerfully) 723.5 and 203 to others. Provides Immunity to Fire. (I already have acid and cold immunities). Provides rChaos (as does the newly acquired Sauron swap). Greetings, dungeon. May your deaths be swift and unresisted. Now a swap of my current shield of preservation with the one at home means I'll have all resistances covered except for pStun and 3 immunities since my current shield provides rChaos..

                This level with vault has some nice items: two rings with slays, though I’ll only post the better of the two (which was actually in a hydra pit), and a third ring with powerful stats and 500 heal but aggravates.

                The Band �Finweneda’ (+1, +8) <+2, +5, +3, +1> Found lying on the floor in a pit at 4000 feet (level 80)

                It randomly makes you teleport {cursed}
                +2 wisdom
                +2 dexterity
                +5 constitution
                +3 stealth
                +1 light
                Provides immunity to acid, fire.
                Provides resistance to lightning, cold, shards.
                Provides protection from fear.
                Cannot be harmed by lightning.
                Feather Falling. Speeds regeneration. Grants the ability to see invisible things. Prevents paralysis.

                When I go back home I’ll see if I can’t finagle my gear so that I can wear two rings of power and still make 20 speed.

                    I've been swapping it with another ring of power, but it does manage to teleport me at the *most* inopportune times. Just after I got all buffed up to fight sauron, had my wand of annihilation at the ready he comes into view and I teleport to the other side of the level. S fell easily, though, quite a lot easier than I expected. Not so many summons and his health just diminished very quickly with a few flicks of the wand and the acid scythe (600something), like any other unique all game. M, on the other hand is gonna be tough, cause I have no means for hurting him. I'm doing 350 before buffs against M in melee and don't have a great launcher <x6> +16. I'm sure the dungeon will provide on DL100.

                    At least I have 40 !healing (9 still at home) 18 !*healing*, 6 !Life and 36 restore mana. Worst comes to worse it will be a long fight. But I'm very confident I will get the damage to 550+ while screwing around on the level killing what few uniques remain.

                    Say, I've found at least 10 of each advanced book (there was 4 Tensers on one level) but I have yet to see one Kelek's (have object detection spell, too). Does hobbit rogue not get kelek's?

                      you only get Bedlam inside Kelek if you are a rogue, which is an utterly useless spell.

                        @Grotug--surely you found an adequate ego weapon by now, if no artifacts? Even a Lochaber axe of *Slay Evil* would work OK against M.

                          You know, I don't think I was paying much attention to {ego}s. There probably was one I didn't see, but I had two wands of annihilation coming into the fight and picked up a staff of power while fleeing P's mobs towards the end of the fight which contributed a fair bit to his demise along with some bolts. I'd empty the staff and wands on him, then melee him for a bit, then when an opportunity presented itself I'd recharge and empty again before he got in melee range again. I suppose melee accounted for about 60%. I used a lot of !healings (nearly 20?) but I think only one *healing* (I think I left the !Lifes at home and left all the !CCW, too). He only got off one mana storm on me near the end of the fight, but his melee and summons did enough damage to make up for it. I kept moving off of the ; whenever P would move to try to get at me. Not sure if that weakens the rune, but the next turn I'd be back on it, and the next turn it would be destroyed. The only rune that lasted more than like two rounds was the last one of 6, where P and a Horned Reaper couldn't get me and P summoned no more, and died with the rune still standing. Found a better xbow (I think x6 with extra shots) that I had to enchant using a few of my many !Restore Mana.

                          I was afraid to use banish or Mbanish; so many monsters all over the place; figured I'd hurt myself below 600 and then get mana stormed. Plus, I like to kill things inbetween fighting M in the hopes of getting a weapon (which is how I got the upgrade in xbow). I did the entire fight without any destructs or banishments. Just phased a lot and occasionally teleported away. I TO'd Grip and Smeagol but P never summoned them again.

                            i take it you are doing forced descent? do scrolls of teleport level work? you could use them to generate a few additional level to milk for artifacts.

                              Yes, I'm playing forced descent. ?Teleport Level scrolls work; they always take you one floor down, unless you are on DL99 and Sauron is still alive. Once you hit level DL99, you cannot recall and you cannot be sunk through the floor by any of the many means the game has to sink you through the floor. This means rNexus is not necessary for fighting Sauron since he cannot send you down to Morgoth before he is defeated by you, and he cannot send you up a floor, because Forced Descent does not allow, by any means, for the player to ascend floors.

                                tele-self, and wait for morgoth. do not *destroy*.
                                use half your arrows, tele-self, wait for morgoth, use the other half, tele self, gather up used arrows, TO the summons if necessary, repeat.

                                most summons will get lost in the dungeon between your teleport-selfs as they try to path to you, but get stuck in the middle as you keep jumping from one side to the other.

                                that's more or less the only tactic you got without rune, strong melee, ranger arrows, or chaos strike.

                                i love playing rogues, but i think they have the weakest endgame ..
