While there is a good reason (physically) why there shouldn't be a chest in a chest. I see no reason why an ?Acq scroll shouldn't produce another ?Acq scroll. It's silly, but doesn't seem like a bug to me. (it would be a bug if it occurred more than 1% of the time though.)

There could also be smaller chest inside larger one. Matryoshka doll -chests. Other way around it would require time lord technology, and that doesn't fit in angband universe.

Binding of Isaac has chests that sometimes contain smaller chests. This can be hugely irritating when you have a limited supply of keys and decide to spend one on the chest, only for it to pop out another locked chest...

Sometimes the nesting goes 4+ levels deep, and the last (tiny) chest then spews out a gigantic number of items.

Regarding Angband, perhaps there could be a trap that causes a chest to fall from the ceiling and hit you on the head?

Not Vanilla feel, but for the right variant (horror themed? Is there a more recent one than Cthanband?), having the smallest one cast Summon Cenobites some of the time could be fun.

You'd think it would, you know, resist...

That actually sounds like a bug to me. Checking v4's edit files, !ResistCold does have the RESIST_COLD flag, so it shouldn't be shatterable by cold attacks -- shards would be a different story, of courseu.

Well, this wasn't v4; it was Chengband, which is based on a really old version of Angband, so I'm not surprised

I'm not sure that resist cold potion should be invulnerable to cold damage. It's still just liquid in a bottle, magic happens inside the drinker after consuming it.

I think either option makes sense.

I think this is a case of "rule breaking" by making an exception to that rule. Question is which rule: anything giving resistance is also immune to damage caused by that element, or potions are vulnerable to cold.

[EDIT] I think temporary effects do not need to follow rule one, permanent effect items do (rings of resist lightning ignore lightning, but items making temporary effect like resistance spells in spellbook don't make book itself resistant to elements)
