Yet another best character so far:-). Recently I have lost staff of magi cause stupid Fire Vortex breathed its smelly breath and burnt it. Damn, quite a shame. With it, my SP was virtually unlimited. I started using my axe to save some SP since I have 3 blows/turn although I never used melee that much. I don't like to stand close to my enemy so I appreciate Rune of Protection. Pitty I can't use Beaked Axe of Hurin because I need what Axe of Balli Stonehand provides me.

My biggest problem now is that I don't posses any mean of great destruction. If I run into something with elemental resistance it's quite difficult to kill it with my current spells. I haven't found any special spell book except Mordenkainen's Escapes. RNG, please!

I know that with this character I might be quite deeper but I rather advance slowly since I have never been that deep. My stats are almost maxxed though so I thing it's time to dive.

Oh but why on earth are you wearing amulet of searching when you have ESP amulet at home??

If you're going deeper, you'll need poison resistance. Either hope for something which gives it or replace either of those =INT with your =ResPoison.

Cause I have Thranduil = I have ESP. My Amulet of ESP gives me +5 searching, my Amulet of Searching is +6.

With both rings of INT on I have 0% fail for all of my spells except Rune of Protection. When my INT is high enough to assure this without the ring I'll swap it for resPois. Now I rely on resPois spell.

Not long ago, after killing some not worthy foes, I saw a book on the dungeon floor that I've never seen before. Full of hopes I checked it's name..... Guess what I saw.... Wraths of gods! Aaaaarrrrrrgggggggggg! I sold it in the temple for 90000 Au or so, so it's probably quite a find for a Priest but I'm mage, you hear me RNG, MAGE! What about some Raal?????!!!! :-(

Life can be dreadfully ironic as many Angband players know... As usual it started as a dream. Recalled myself to level 37 and had superb feeling. After some exploring I discovered the source - Great Vault. I continued exploring and clearing the level before entering as I usually do and during this I found Staff of Power. Very useful thing cause it inflicts 120 damage to anything within line of sight. Great when you are surrounded or don't wanna bother with trolls in pit.

The vault itself was inhabited by approximately 8 Ancient dragons including one Multi-hued, 2 uniques, Cherub, some nasty wraiths, Berserker and some other creatures I haven't ever met. I advanced slowly, clearing section by section, always teleporting powerful monsters away and killing them alone in the dungeon or avoiding them.

To make it short I cleared all the vault and what I found fully filled one quite big room. I found one of those Paur... Gauntlets, Cloak Thorongil, Long Sword Elvagil AND Armour of Isildur. Besides these four artifacts there were 2 weapons of Westernesse, Holy Avenger and tons of ego armour and weapons, rings, amulets etc... But most important find was Raal's Tome. Finally! Finally I could kill creatures I never was able to because of their resistance, HP or self-healing. Shockwave, Meteor shower... AND that rift. With these spells I managed to kill Ancient Multi-hued Dragon, Quaker, Master of Earth (first unique from the vault), Cherub, Dark elven sorcerer... But it was all too short experience.

Last section of the vault contained Tselakus, the Dreadlord (second unique). I read his description and I knew then he is something really nasty. Pity I didn't know he is little bit more OoD (29 levels) and what kind of spells he can cast although I knew it would be something really powerful. I teleported him immediately, killed others and picked last loot from the vault. I knew that encountering this guy would be near death experience and without Raal's Tome I wouldn't even think of attacking him. In fact I didn't want to yet but he approached as I was killing some ogres and trolls near the room where I kept my loot cause I didn't want anything to carry it arround. He stepped out of the wall so I wanted to teleport him but he was still behind the corner. I was -1 speed because of loot
but with haste spell I was +9 and my AC was 125. If I was to attack Tselakus I would be +10 speed, I would cast Shield so my AC would be 175 and I would cast Resistance to enhance my resBase and resPois. However I did none. Just that +9 speed. In fact it wouldn't probably help at all. I waited one turn to let him come to my line of sight so I could teleport him. He did... And he cast Darkness storm... Instant kill...

Gelring should never return from the Halls of Mandos though he won't be forgotten.

This was my first character that got deeper than level 10 and I think it'll be quite a few months before I return to play again.

I feel your pain, Angband can be vicious.

Don't take it that hard, begin another character and you'll be that deep again within a few days. Next time you'll know not to take on too powerful foes before you're ready for them. You *don't* have to kill everything.

Good luck for the next character!

Thank you for your empathy.

I know that I don't have to kill everything and I think it's quite clear from my last post that I pretty much wasn't hunting Tselakus. The problem is to recognize what monster is too powerful for you when you never was that deep. It's true that after reading his descrition I had really bad feeling about fighting Tselakus. I just wasn't careful enough when he was near.

Angband was consuming loads of my time and starting again after level 40 mage is difficult. BTW, Gelrin had some long holiday, I think it was six months without playing. He was around 200K exp when I started again. Then it took me 3 months to get him where he was when he died this morning. That's speed of my game or maybe it reflects time I can devote to playing.

Even though I think I'll have some break I started thinking about a new a character. Mage definetely but what race? I'm choosing between elf, high-elf or maybe dunadan. Choosing elves is something like personal preference based on sympathy rather then pure calculation. I prefer high-elf but when I was new to Angband I found it quite difficult to survive early levels due to slow exp gain. Then I tried elf and some of those survived much longer, resulting in Gelrin. But maybe I have enough experience now to play high-elf. Dunadan is also my favourite race of Tolkiens world and high constitution attracts me because I lost Gelrin due to low HP. I was near my max of 385 and ended up dead with just -15 :-( We'll see. At least I have time to think about it.
