This is the latest of my "mythology-based" characters, but he seems to have run into the "disappearing Sauron/recalling from Mount Doom" bug. Unless there is some way around this, it seems this poor guy is stranded. Which is a pity, because he actually made Barehand + Music + Manwe Prayer into a pretty formidable fighting tactic.

Although he ran across the Robe of Great Luck, this character has been pretty unlucky all-round. He bumped into Ancalagon in the Crypt (Ancalagon went on a summoning spree, but annoyingly didn't drop anything useful), ran into a succession of druj princess quests in Angband, and now he falls victim to his horrible bug. Damn.

Through a minor miracle, a work-around for the Mt Doom bug was worked out by VeryFoobar about a week ago, so all may not be lost.

Thanks for the help!

Vainamoinen's now gone on to win (Sauron, as if to make up for lost time, cast Hand of Doom twice in a row during the battle, but with my character's decent saving throw the spell was successfully resisted both times).

I'm now considering taking this character to The Void; I've already got a Cloak of Air handy, but I will need to stock up on some potions first.

Congradulations!

1590 charges in the Wand of Thrain is probably the highest I've ever seen.

Cool, A Manwe-worshipping barehand bard! Nice original build! Heroic Ballad?

One thing I wish I'd know when I was running a Bard: the standard artifact instruments don't require that you wield them to cast songs. So, you can keep Heroic Balad on, and let loose a Horns of Ylmir if you've got Boromir's Horn in your inventory.

Heroic Ballad + Manwe's Blessing + Avatar was the usual tactic against the big opponents (though Horns of Ylmir came in handy during druj princess quests). That set-up gave me a to-hit of 130 (not bad for Barehand), and a to-dam of 80, as well as 13 attacks per round (3 extra from the Ring I'm wearing, plus 2 extra from Avatar). Things are even better now that I've got Morgoth's Crown (at last a decent alternative source of Nether Resistance!); I can now swap in a randart Ring of +2 attacks to give a total of 15 attacks when in full battle mode.

Manwe worship has also given a couple of added perks for this character - Noxious Cloud to take out the low-level annoyances, and Recharge, which meant that I could cart along a Wand of Stone Prison at Mount Doom and not have to worry about the charges getting drained.

Thanks for the information about artifact instruments -though it's a bit of a moot point given that I've never actually found any, apart from the Harp of Thorin in Theme (I just inscribed that harp I'm currently using to fit with the general theme of the character).
