After several failures, and a forced week without Heng I'm back with a new fairy :) The RNG was very greedy in the beginning, but it has gotten better and better over the game. Within the last hour of playing I found enough stuff to change half my equipment around, and now i feel save enough to force the chaos channels book out of a wyrm in the dragon cave. It's the second time I find book four before finding book three...

Stopped after 7 wyrms, too scary those gloves, and far too much scumming. Decided to go back to Castle. Looks like the RNG decided to reward my decission to not scum the book :) First monster after recall was nappa, who can be confused. Not only did he drop my book but also 2 arts (cambeleg and celegorm)

So I did trink polymorph potions as adviced by reaver, and guess what? Living computer :) That's exactly the 4 points to int i was missing, so I'm now at 9% fail manastorm. Hope to get enough items to be able to counteract, if a bad mutation forces me to get rid of the computer one.
Also cleared cloning pits for the first time in my Heng life... Giant fire Ant count: 569

Got the Palantir and closed my last res hole for the moment. Seems like the Dragon Cave has no Boss? At least I cannot remember slaying one, but the Dump says it is cleared.
Question: I was told that i need amber[3] saving throw to not get statued by the blood curse. I am now level44 and have maxed wisdom, but still only chaos rank saveing throw... Wonder if i will ever get amber..

Lost the living Computer, had to happen I guess. Reshuffeled equipment until i found a setup with both max cons and max int, but it comes with a 80 mana encumberance...

Do you folks usually do all the quests? Because those things get harder than the normal game it seems and the reward does not seem worth it...
Got really lucky when I did not die doing crypt quest. Did tactical phase door and landed in round room about 6 fields long, with 4 druj waiting for me... Lucky enough they didn't wake up while i tried to tele out again for 3 turns until i realized it is impossible to tele out there. That's what I call an evil trap. The only exit is a granite wall 3 steps away from me, so I start walking:
3 steps to the wall: First two wake up.
2 steps: I eat first Nether Magic, something gets summoned, other two wake up
1 step: I eat more Nether Magic, Room is now filled with Undead
stone to mud wall: I eat enough Nether to go down to 200, even worse something is summoned onto the only escape spot
Next three turns I am asking myself why I had to do the quest while drinking Healing Potions just strong enough to keep me alive. Then the Undead that blocked the path leaves the spot or gets killed no clue. Next several turns I stone to mud, walk, heal until i am out of sight of the drui. Got lucky, the moster directly next to me was a skelt dragon, blocking the big undeads behind.
Out of the crypt again I promise that this Character will not do another quest...

That was three levels ago, now I'm 49, still no Amber Save but the first three Amberites are down. 2 curses, nothing lethal yet. If I can put the speed ring into my Character i guess I'm ready for the big fights. Looks like i will never pass 900hp... On the other Hand damage output is nice. Uniques that are not chaos resistant eat Logrus breathes for 800+ damage at 44 mana, the others eat Manastorm 500 damage for 37 mana. Most I've seen so far go down really quick

That is a dirty trick ... but you survived. Personally, I only do a quest if it presents a useful reward, or if it stands in the way of a quest that presents a useful reward (like the Tower that comes before the Killing Fields). I never do the Royal Crypt, but if I did, I wouldn't teleport ;-)

As far as the Blood Curse goes, your saving throw is probably high enough that death is unlikely. But there is always a small chance ... And I *hate* working 40 hours on a character only to have him die that way. Your call, though. Me, I'd probably find an Amulet of Antimagic and wait until the Amberite was down to 1 star ... then swap in Antimagic and kill it with a Staff of Manastorm, or something similar.

On 14.8.2005 03:19 Matthias wrote:
So the Antimagic will stop the Curse totally or only some parts of it? Sounds like a good thing to do...

Antimagic will totally prevent you from being turned into a statue ... it does this by making your saving throw really high. Other aspects of the curse (high summons, etc) could still kill you, however, though this is much less likely ... (I once had the curse summon Tiamat and Uriel who both proceded to kill me in a single turn ... double resistance is also a good idea ;-)

Well, Amberite #4 is down, was wielding anti magic this time. He didn't curse :) maybe a good sign...

Logrus Breath reached Master, thats 876 damage for 41 mana if at full health

I lost my coolest Heng char in the cript quest... exactly in the druj room, a Paladin. Kinda... there r some very rewarding quests. Cloning Pits and Castle are a must. So do quests but be selective about it ;)

Destroyer was Quest Monster on 88. omg, I really wonder how to kill that thing if you can't throw 800 damage per turn from a save distance.... Anyway with 30 perm speed this character looks more than ready. I don't think i ever had 30 perm in vanilla, but I'll defenitly continue killing bosses one after another carefully. Tomorrow I will win Hengband for the first time... or will start Jeda Mk5

Did you swap an Amulet of Reflection for your Telepathy v. the Destroyer? Its always a good idea for spellcasters to block those Mana Bolts ...

Re: Quests, I always do the first set, because they're pretty easy and occasionally will give nice treasure for the effort For the middle ones, I agree with the earlier comment: Unless the reward is useful (Killing Fields is always good, you've GOT to do the Cloning Pits and Old Castle, otherwise, only if the reward fills a specific hole) I don't bother. I almost never do the late ones except maybe the Watery Cave because its so easy.

I got free action, a useless activition and... Anti-Magic Shell :( Now I HAVE to redo the equipment... damn. The RNG once again dislikes me greedy people

a scroll of mundanity will remove *ALL* random resists from the armor, so it will not work this time.

Oh well, the lost crown did not prevent me from continuing... After almost 1 hour of trying different equipment setups i finally found one, and it even had another +3 speed. Oberon fell with ease, even so he double moved summon Cyber demons/Manastorm the second turn.

Serpent, now that was a different story, and I have to say it is way more difficult than Morgoth in Vanilla. Used many many Potions... Destructed the all-in-one at least 5 times :) Several really close calls when escaping directly into his summons, but the RNG was with me every time :) :)

yeah, overkill setup, but I think i needed the confidence. First time I find Ringil ever, and i couldn't use it, what a shame. I've started a fighter now... Kinda sure he won't find Ringil

Whoa... that's one peculiar equipment build! Lol, every single high resist covered exactly once!

Re: quests, I almost never do the Archliches quest.. usually by the time you're strong enough to do that quest, it's late enough that you're not going to find any interesting artifacts in there.

I really really like Killing Fields though... the Warriors of the Dawn tend to respawn quite a lot, and they're generally not too difficult to kill as long as you don't get surrounded, so it's a really safe and quick way of levelling up through the mid-levels.

But the Vault always scares me, ever since I lost my first character there due to Boty-Buelding (or however that idiot spells it).

But wow! Congrats on your win! Did you kill the serpent with pure Mana Storms? I'd be interested in reading a more-in-depth post about how you fought the serpent.. despite having won with both Mage and Priest, I've always used melee as primary attack, and still haven't really figured out how to win with magic alone..

On 20.8.2005 00:04 Matthias wrote:
thanks :) :)
The reason I failed the vault was a great crystal drake, and my 250 hp without res shards. I didn't know there are random monsters there, but I really missed sting in the mid-game...
okay in-depth description coming :)
Mk4 did never shot an arrow, and never meleed over the entire game.
So, yes Manastorm it was. The most importang thing about it, is that for a High-Mage using an item that reduces Spellcost, we are talking about a 0% fail manastorm, that does 500 damage and only costs 37 mana. Basicly any Boss that wasn't the Serpent could be killed before it does too many moves, without using a mana potion, and usually without using healing. That's why I had this big amount of saved potions for the serpent at home. I also had a base speed of 32 :) On the down side, it was my first battle with the serpent, as i never beaten Heng, or another Z Variant before.

First I tried killing the Serpent the way I use to kill Morgoth in Vanilla, that is using phase door to hop around it, until it summons bad stuff. After I used 16 of the 20 scrolls had to realize this would not work. Morgoth was still alive, as were three other higher uniques. Basicly I never took away more than 2 stars with my method, and after the escape the Serpent was almost full again.

I then changed the tactic, I used disintegrate to create a big emtpy room between me and the space the serpent would come out of the dungeon. With the Serpent casting 1in3 times I could then attack several times in a row, without having to waste time phasing. With this method myself was still surrounded by a good amount of rock, so I could ignore medium summons even with only 876 hp.

On a sidenote, I had one reaaaly close call close to the Death of the Serpent... Something bad was summoned, but instead of teleporting "mah" i press n instead of m, and so repeated the last move that was drinking a mana potion. For a strange reason the bad stuff around decided to not kill me and the serpent did a walk. The teleport next turn landed me next to Morgoth, but I surveved that too.
So basicly I'd say I used: Many Potions, a good amount of luck, really good equpiment and a 500 damage manastorm
