Can I carry over the current (Dumle) character into this new version or do I need to start over?

What is the latest version?

Gasp... Just recently returning to Angband I just ran into my first Greater Vault (the checkerboard). So far, I've found 11 artifacts and a bunch of uniques. Thankfully enough my lvl 30 mage has teleport other which has saved me at crucial moments; Uriel, Gorlim, Lorgan and a pesky Lesser Titan comes to mind, all found way out of depth at dungeon lvl 22 mind you. Still lacking most resists so I have to be cautious in the approach.

Just opened Dumle in a 3.0.5 version (instead of the previous 2.9.0) and all of a sudden my Mordenkainen Escapes turned into a Raal's Tome of Destruction?! Hey, it's not that I'm complaining... Also, I noticed more spells in the standard spell-books! Need to explore these before I abandon the level I described above.

On 18.9.2004 00:18 loefftj@yahoo.com wrote:
You will notice a few changes. The spells are a little different ... better, I think. And a few of the artifacts have changed. There were also some more ego type items added to the list. I am currently playing 3.0.3 until I finish my current game and then I will up to 3.0.5. But the changes between 2.9 and 3.0.x were big.

New Angband version, new char level, still same dungeon level...

Still at the same dlevel... Managed to kill Lorgan and the Lesser Titan with the new spells found in 3.0.5. Also killed a couple of new uniques that the Titan summoned. Artifact count is now up to 13 for this specific level! Still avoiding Uriel and Gorlim though, haven't really tried Uriel (expecting some nasty breath weapons here) and Gorlim's mana and water bolts keeps me running...

Since I'm already overloaded with artifacts, I'll probably abandon this level shortly.

Finally managed to to kill Lorgan before abandoning the Greater Vault at dlevel 22. Kept him dazed and hacked him to pieces... :-) Unfortunately he managed to get a hit or two in to disenchant my Orome before actually dying. :-/

Still adopting the cautios approach, going down level by level and recalling back up to town level. Already found another couple of rods of acid ball as well as some INT potions, bringing the spell-based amount of damage way up. Next up is to hover round dlevel 25 to max stats.

Thranduil + "oMagi + Theoden might work better right now. You would lose a little bit of speed and a little INT. But you would pick up both conf and blind resist, ESP, and keep your hp. I would also dump the ring of Flames for any nice Con or Int ring that you find.

Small update, clvl 33, dlvl 26, still haven't found any stat potions... However, did find a scroll Acquirement, wondering as to how this behaves. Does it use the dlevel as a base to create stuff or could I read it on the town level and get the same quality stuff?

Another small update... Just made clevel 34 and are spending my time on the levels close to 30 trying to pick up some stat potions. Found a better RoS and also BoS, Dumle is now +20 unhasted, kinda cool... Strange thing happened recently though, found Paurhach lying on the floor on 1400 feet without getting a special feeling... Anyone who can explain this?

You have 'preserve artifacts' on.
With 'preserve artifacts' on, you can never get a 'special' feeling. I think it tops off at Superb. If you hadn't of found Paurhach on the level it was generated on, you would have had the possibility of them being generated and finding them later. With 'preserve artifacts' off, you can get the super-awesome 'special' feeling, but artifacts only generate once. So, if you hadn't of found the gauntlets of Paurhach and changed levels, they would have shown up in your artifacts list and no chance of ever getting them.

As for aquirement and *aquirement* scrolls, I save them up in my home and wait for a really deep level to read them all. Usually 4000 feet or deeper. I get a slightly higher success rate in finding artifacts this way... but it could just be coincidence. I once got Soulkeeper this way.

Small update again, clevel 35... Still maxing stats round dlevel 30. Quick question though, found Chaos Dragon Scale Mail to get rDis and rCha, what about the Chaos/Dis breath, will that affect items carried by monsters or are they created on death?

Found enough potions to get 4 blows/turn which helps a lot... :-)

Monster item drops are created on death so the breath won't affect them. However I don't know about items laying on the ground. Easy enough to test though. I would consider dumping Hammerhand / =oFlames for =oCon and Thranduil. Would lose rNexus but would gain rBlind, ESP, and some more mana. I am a big fan of ESP so I might be biased.

Anyway, closing in on max stats now and will then begin a slow dive... Anyone who has any guidelines as to what dlevels not to pass before a certain clevel? But then again, I guess it all has to do with with what kind of resists you have... I guess I really miss resConf, resBlind, resPoi and HoldLife.

/GeDe

As to the BM, they rarely seem to have anything useful whenever I'm at town level. Do the contents in the shops reflect your current max dlevel or is it just random? I need something to spend all my money on...

Will start my descent at max stats or at clevel 40, which ever comes first. If can only find HoldLife and rConf I'd be a really happy camper...

I would dump the =oFlames for the =oCon. You will pick up several more hp. And the ring of flames doesn't give you much besides the temp fire resistance (you already have R&S spellbook) and the rather weak fireball activation. With less than 550 hp you are still in the instadeath range for big nether breath. The extra Con might put you over.

Thanks for the pointers on the =oCon, it really helps when fighting those pesky D's with breath weapons.

Quick question... don't you ever get blinded or confused? I've always kept those covered from an early point in the game so I don't know what really happens without them later on... is it the case that your saving throw always repels them, or is it that you have a cool tactic?

Sure, do... That's why I keep a more than fair supply of Staff of curing. As to strategy, I wouldn't go as far as claiming that I have any special ditto. Besides staying out of open areas with breath monsters around, that is! Hiding behind a bend (man-made or natural) in the corridor helps a lot, taking on the group monsters one by one. It even helps on the bigger monsters, it seems they are less likely to use their breath weapons once involved in a hand-to-hand combat. Add to that, now that I found the amulet of sustenance, I don't really have an issue with the undead monsters drain life/drain stats capabilities. (Miss my "oRengeration though, needs to rest more now.) What still keeps me running though are the nether/confusion breaths.

With the relative wealth of Dumle, I don't really have to keep that many inventory spots open for loot. Instead, I bring whatever I need to stay healthy.

I've been wondering about Tensers transformation though, do I really need it? There are only two spells (Greater recharging and Elemental brand) in there which I'm elligible for and they are really not that helpful, at least not now!

If this is the way things are going to develop for the last 45 levels, I'm not going to get anywhere near to facing Morgoth unless I find some rNet items.

Also, found a weapon of Fury which gives me another 2 attacks, bringing the total to 6 attacks. However, using the Axe of Fury I get the impression it's still not as effective as my trusty old Orome, maybe it has to do with the Orome fire brand or that I loose 4 in speed swapping it out. I'll give the Axe a chance for now and keep the Orome in my inventory in need for the extra speed. (Current max speed 31 hasted)

However, I'm considering dumping them now to free up a spot in my home inventory, as I can usually find enough restore mana potions. I'd really like a free spot to be able to leave my Tensers behind when I go monster hunting...

As to the time-hounds, they usually die directly from a chaos strike or a mana storm, but it consumes a lot of mana and since they're so fast you'd have to be really careful to get the first hit (spell) in...

Also, just did my first eye-druj recently and I keep getting amazed how hard some of the monsters are to kill (hacked it to death). Never having reached these depths before I can't but wonder if Dumle is ever going to make it to the final dlevels...

Would really like to pick up some better equip, recently found Himring to get rNether but haven't yet made the switch as it will mean a loss of 25 in AC and the big chaos/disenchantment breath of the Chaos DSM. Anyone who has any opinions as to how important the AC is compared to the resists?

I don't know about the A.C. numbers... but Himring would give you resist Chaos and Nether and Poison. Belthronding already gives you resist to Disenchantment. So, you would only lose the 25 to A.C. and not the resists, which I think is well worth it 'cause nether breathe can get pretty nasty and more common where you are... also it frees up your cloak slot if you find one with better A.C. bonus if you're worried about A.C.... like a Shadow Cloak or Elven Cloak of Protection or something. I think your A.C. is fine anyway. Before any hard battle you can always cast your Shield Spell and crank up your A.C. by 50, which really puts you in the good A.C. category.

On 21.11.2004 06:28 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
Resists are almost always more important than AC. rNether isn't that important though, as the max dam from nether breath is 550 unresisted and some ~470 resisted, so it doesn't make that much of a difference. The primary reason to get the high resists is to avoid the nasty side effects, and in nether's case the side effect is pretty harmless, just exp loss.

I suggest you wear that +2 CON Dwarven armour, which brings your CON to 18/200 for a nice boost in maxhp.

Try to get rBlind into your gear somehow, you won't always have that extra turn to cure it.

About those pesky time hounds, I don't personally fight them at all unless I can take them out in a single melee round. Then it's good exp to wait behind a corner and kill them one by one.

Remember that as a mage you have complete control of the battle. Banish everything that's troublesome to kill and doesn't give good enough exp/drops.

After maxing clevel I guess it's all down to whatever artifact/equip you can find, thus increasing the importance of the loot?

I'll try to change my way of playing (since Hammerhand is aggravating I ususally do a lot of the cornering strategy allowing the monsters to come to me, one by one...) and start to banish to monster I don't really need/want to meet (druj's, comes to mind, I have yet to find any loot after a kill. 'Z's and 'e's aren't that rewarding either...)

Loads of summonings and couple of Archliches and Dreadlords made Dumle's every day hack-n-slash work a lot more dangerous. Would not even considered cleaning this one out without resNeth and HoldLife. The Dreadlords were really the hardest since they teamed up on me and I couldn't use the walls as protection. Now proceeding slowly while on the lookout for better equip, !oHealings and Uniques. It seems that !oHealing are becoming less common the deaper I get, not even !o*Healing* are to be found anywhere and I guess !oLife are just a freak event altogether...

One more thing, my old friend, Uriel, from way bay at the checkboard vault on dlevel 22 and clevel 30 came back to visit me. This time he was actually in-depth and Dumle was much better prepared. I have now managed to find ~20 !oHealing so I can now resume my quest for the lower levels.

At a first quick glance I found Ancalagon, Feagwath and a Horned reaper in there , looks like fun... A quick look in the monster spoilers tells me Ancalagon is native at dlevel 85 which leads me to assume that Dumle won't leave this level with 20+ !oHealing's, if he'll leave at all.

You can take Feagwath out as well with this char. A little bit of planning and careful play should ensure victory.

If I calculate correctly, your base speed is +26 (minus possible weight reduction). As a mage, you can be permanently hasted, bringing you to > +30...

There's still room for improvement, namely rSound (watch out for those Great Wyrms of Thunder), Telepathy (and Regen) would be nice. And immunities of course.

Since you're in preserve mode, artifacts won't show up in the log unless you do something to identify them, like casting the spell or selling them.

Sauron was a pushover and Morgoth not much tougher. In the final battle Dumle relied on two main weapons, the not so trusty mana-storm and the Umbar and shots of Holy Might combo. All in all, Elessar, Gondor, 6 Healing, 1 *Healing* and 6 Restore Mana was used. No teleport away, teleport level nor Summon Unique was used during the fight. Loads of summonings, high Demons and Dragons primarily which was disposed of using banishment or in the extreme cases, mass banishment.

Maybe the RNG was good to us, Morgoth surely was not what Dumle had expected him to be! :-)

Dumle is my first ever win and will probably be allowed to retire soon, nowadays my spare time to spend on Angband is really scarce so I will probably not try to find the remaining artifacts.
