Well, this should be exciting. I just blew the very first Melkor god quest, so now there aren't enough skill points to get Prayer up to even 25, let alone 35.

He's been through quite a few weapons by now, but I'm stil hoping for a nice Randart Axe.

The archer/axemaster combo has worked extremely well.

Somehow Smallblade has made it to Angband 99 while only level 43. Monsters were amazingly able to sleep through his imposing presence. I guess +11 in total stealth bonuses (Trone is +4, his cloak is +4, and +3 boots of stealth) plus being a hobbit meant he didn't have to fight much on the way down.

He did clear out most of the Crypt (only stopping when his pack was full of artifacts. Hobbit luck rocks.), but Smallblade's big tactic versus summoners is to teleport himself away and the Dim Gates and Nameless would have eaten him up. He skipped them.

If he makes it to level 50, he'll have enough points to get prayer to 25 after all, but only if he leaves axemastery at 40. Ugh.

Finally picked up some decent axes by going to a dungeon town axe smith and spending about 300k repeatedly buying out the store. Boring, but at least he's got some options now. Picked up the boots of speed by doing the same thing at a rare footware shop (had to spend 500k there, but most of that was to actually buy the boots).

Sauron's dead and I'm hunting for Morgoth. He's gotta be around here somewhere.

Never tried wearing the ring before, and I think this may be my last character for a while, so Smallblade gave it a shot.

The results are awfully nice, but I didn't realize he'd be taking a big hp loss. Losing 1/3 of his hits made the final battle against Sauron trickier and won't help things against Morgoth. If I knew it was going to be so severe, I might have taken a shot at Mt Doom.

On 27.5.2004 16:36 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
In retrospect Smallblade probably should have saved Gondolin (even though he had already donned the ring, so Gondolin was already destroyed), but at the time I was trying to see how low a level at which Smallblade could win (he started going after Sauron at level 43) and didn't feel like bothering. With the benefit of hindsight, the extra HP would have been handy.

We're at round 3 versus Morgoth now. Smallblade was winning the first one and had reduced Morgoth's melee damage to just about nothing with Curse despite repeated unique summons. Morgoth had summoned Khamul, the Mouth of Sauron, Ungoliant, Pazuzu, Tselakus, Sanghayando, Waldern, and Fundin plus various demons and wraiths but Smallblade kept on chopping, mostly because Fundin and his summons were tanking most of them. Finally, Morgoth was teleported away thanks to the axe's chaotic effects and the path back to me ran right through a graveyard. Morgoth showed up with a couple dozen reavers and lichs of various grades in tow, and it was time to split.

Round 2 had bad terrain for anti-summoning. Morgoth won by summoning Wyrms right at the start, forcing Smallblade teleported away.

Morgoth has opened round 3 by summoning the Cat Lord and Waldern. I'm pretty sure Smallblade can take them, but its probably not worthwhile. He has to use the axe for the life draining, but he needs to use the Anchor to prevent Morgoth from being teleported away (and potentially return with reinforcements). The only way he can use the Anchor is if Morgoth can't summon (otherwise Smallblade might get one-turn killed), and the only way to do that is to fight Morgoth in a vault with unbreakable walls. Time to go find a vault.

Round three proved decisive, thanks to Melkor summoning demons to help me out, and Morgoth starting out by summoning monsters. Having every close by square filled with leveled wolves (and friendly leveled greater demons) is awesome because then you can't be surrounded by summoned uniques. I never killed a wolf because they were too valuable as a buffer, but as my demons slowly killed them, they summoned more demons and dragons. After a while, Smallblade had to keep draining life to heal up from dragon breath rather than Morgoth damage, because the big guy's melee was weakened by curse to the point of ineffectiveness. Having curse at 25 would have made the battle trivial.

Skipping the princess quests sure keeps your exp down.

If you're worshipping Melkor and are a melee-type, it's a *very* good idea to get your Prayer skill as high as possible.

Warriors I've run who worshipped Melkor and got a high Prayer level won so easily it was laughable. Since the speed reduction ability of Curse works on everything, even uniques, it makes the toughest monsters a breeze.

Just food for thought.

Yeah. The plan was to get Prayer to 25 while maxing axe mastery. Unfortunately, I somehow blew the very first god quest and that put Smalblade in a huge hole skill point-wise.

However, Smallblade was really fun to play. In fact, he and Monotone were probably the most fun to take against Morgoth of any characters I've had. Why? Because by the time everyone else got to Morgoth he was a pushover. Thaumaturges and anti-magic archers have a reasonable expectation of killing Morgoth without taking any damage.

Axemasters and melee bards don't have powers that can shut Morgoth down, nor do they have the potential for the massive offense of a sword master or possessor. As a result, they have to play a chess game against Morgoth, with moves and counter-moves. They may actually be the only 'balanced' classes.

Having prayer at 50 would have made Morgoth a pushover and would have actually made it less fun.
