OK, so I'm trying an Axemaster to see what everyone's yammering about.

First 25 levels went pretty smoothly. Melkor's been generous with the quests so far (3 completed), but they've been showing up in extremely illogical locations on the world map. Almost got killed after accidentally blundering onto a deep water square while searching for one of them.

Good weapons for this character are few and far between, but otherwise playing him like a normal warrior.

Above level 31 now... whee.

Melkor gave me those last two quests, which made me happy since now my Prayer level is at 25. Curse at level 25 is grrreat.

Good luck from the Princess quests in Mirkwood yielded both Thorin and Cambeleg, but I'm still stuck with a kinda lousy axe. Still doing well though. Thinking maybe Moria/Rhun next.

I guess nobody really doubt you'll make it and thus a win hardly would prove it's an easy task.
But *if* you don't make it, that will be quite another story
However, good luck!
Rubinstein is watching you...

Lots of stuff:
A quest for 11 Dracolichs in Mordor almost did me in, but also yielded a mighty fine randart axe that I gladly pitched Limbslicer for. Later on I found a nice randart Cleaver too... how's that for luck?
Then I got a quest for a bunch of skull druj in Mordor. Can't go back there for a while.
Found both a Rod Tip of Healing and an Adamantite Rod of the Istari on an *insane* level in Paths of the Dead... add to that my new junkart of Mass Genocide and I'm ready to mow down anything in my path.
Could use some more speed though...

Mhh you're too good dimwit, I'll have to hack the next version to make the game 10x harder for your chars ;)

Hey, what did I see? Seven (7!) intrinsics from character, shame on you! Everyone can win such a wimp. ;-) My dwarven axemaster just got 2...
No serious, where do they come from: Zombie, Orc or both the combination?
And where is the drawback for all those intrinsics?

o lord you're fast in what you do...

Back to orcs - I see that you do pretty well, tho that's still pretty far from win... but we all count on you!

Ugh...
Sorry to disappoint my loyal fans ;), but this character perished in the Crypt. It was mostly caused by the RNG getting back at me for all that early-game luck. I had a really tough time during the level; everything summoning greater undead--I must've killed about 5 Nazgul; the Light War Axe of Ice and at least one other randart disintegrated while fighting them. Then I head off to go get the Cloak of Luthien...
While fighting Vampires in that awful corridor I got my brain smashed about three times (in one round!) and I figure okay, screw this level, I'm out of here... Use the void jumpgate and pow, I'm face to face with an udead beholder, which promptly gazes at me and turns me into a vegetable.
Oh lucky me...

Anyway, I might try the Axemaster again, but the class is kind of drab; like a Warrior without any good combinations (like the Grond-Haftedmaster combo). Although the character wasn't strapped for weapons in the late game thanks to randarts, it was pretty wierd having the Princess offer me a Battle Axe and think 'hey, a Battle Axe... that's of no use to me; I'm an Axemaster!'
I guess you're slated to become the first Axemaster winner on oook, Rubin... don't make a mess of it!

Shocking! I really thought you'll made it. I'm also shocked about your incredibly fast play. Seems I'm quite the opposite: Hailin is at least 5(!) weeks old now (in real time).
If you would start a new one now, I'm sure you could easily win the race.
But don't count too much on me. Calling myself a n00b surely is no understatement: My second best char (before Hailin) was a clvl 38 Rohan Knight Swordmaster. Even did not know about picking up a 'challenge class' with Hailin.
One word on battle axes: Currently we are (so far unsuccessfully) trying to convince Neil to bring back battle axes to axemastery. Repeating your last comment in the forum probably would help somewhat...

Well, I don't win all the time; nobody does. I *do* play stupefyingly quickly though; a beginner would be stunned by how I tear through the dungeon.

This is why I like preserve mode. :)

As for the axe thing, I guess I agree with you. It's ridiculous to consider axes as polearms just because their description (written by?) says they are.

Yes, ok, but I'm afraid the word of a broken english speaking n00b doesn't count as much as that of an exellent veteran. Get what I mean?
Of course I could quote your statement in the forum but I've already made too much words about it, mostly ignored. I'm just tired speaking against the wall...
And no, I don't know who wrote the original descriptions.
I only know that it was Neil, who changed the functionality of the axes fitting to the wrong descriptions. Some of the axes, the Lochaber for example, are possibly correct in the polearm class. But in no way the Battle Axes!
Did you read the thread
"Axe skill, polearm skill, and the far reaching attack"?
That's where all the nonsens began.
Currently it's discussed in the Strategie Forum in "Winning Strategie". But here it's so horribly OT meanwhile, that I recommend starting a new thread in the ToME/Ideas Forum or continue in the old one ("Axe skill, polearm skill...").
