Inspired by Timo's Artifactless Bookless Hobbit Mage character, I'm trying something similar in ToME...

Yeek Hermit Sorceror with no fumblefingers and no skill points spending. Haven't decided yet about artifacts--maybe, if I pick up the right corruption.

Wish me luck!

Made it to level 2, after a few dozen tries. My rule for creation scumming was this: keep re-creating until I successfully steal one good weapon or armor. I then headed to the general shop wanting to buy a brass lantern, but the only one there was an ego one. Oh no! Not enough money! Well, I bought a few more torches and then decided to try to steal it. It worked, but somehow I feel I spent too much luck in my early rounds.

Things I've learned playing this type of character:

Pick on unmovable stuff.
Always check opponent monster level.
Never run--nasty tendency of running up right next to a spotted mushroom patch and dying before I get to react.

I'll post a bit later if this guy makes any progress.

(Died and started over) X 20.

Decided I'm gonna go with a different strategy now--cheese to solve the Farmer Maggot quest, and then go kill things with my souped up sling.

Re-posting as soon as I make level 3.

Sweet... I was never so happy to have rolled a 3 for my hit die upon reaching level 2. Level 3 was only a 1 though, but still; now I have the survivability of a normal clvl1 character!

Life's getting good now! HP finally in the double digits, after rolling 3's twice and 1's twice. Saw the RoSlaying at BM and couldn't resist... got lucky. Also saw an Elven Cloak at General Shop, but got busted. Ah, sigh. Now I'm gonna have to walk all the way to Gondolin when I need more fuel.

If you die again, try scumming the maggot quest for mushrooms, especially of Restore STR/CON. They pop up often enough and bring in over 100 apiece. Also, why not go kill nagas with your Amulet of the Serpents? And have you sworn off your 4d2 manathrust, phase door, detect monsters, and light area from the beginning book as well? Even with the fail rate, it's better than nothing.

Farmed worms for a little bit, but almost got killed when I almost didn't realize a giant slug for what it was (as opposed to clear worm mass on ground). Damn mutants...

Ya, that's what I figured out too, except I solved the quest already, so no more mushrooms for me. I think I'm finally past the horrible first stage though.

As for Manathrust and Phase Door, yeah I swore those off. The idea is to use no class abilities at all (similarly, this would have been much easier if I played a Rohanknight or a Thunderlord). The idea is this *will* be the hardest thing in to do in ToME, if I can actually do it :)

On 2.12.2003 02:35 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Oh, and actually you don't start with light area... that requires fire skill, and phase door requires conveyance. So all I really lost as the 4d2 manathrust, which is fine since I have the 2d4 iron shots at double firing rate.

Eh... hm, you're right; halving my HP would be more impressive... but then skeptics might get it into their heads that I'm actually using spellbooks but ditching them before I dump.

(Actually, I'm just too scared... :)

Thoughts on endgame equipment:

Elemental Dark Sword of Greater Life
Heavy Crossbow of Seigecraft
2 Rings of Accuracy (+23)
Amulet of Doom (+9)
Dwarven Amulet of the Magi
Polished PDSM of Immunity
Elven Cloak of Air
Crown of Telepathy
Gloves of Slaying/Might
Boots of Speed (+8)

Of course, for Polished PDSM of Immunity and Elemental Long Sword of Greater Life, I'll probably need a Staff of Wish.

I'll dump again soon.

Big news of the day: I saw *yet another* awesome RoSlaying at the BM. I decided I already tempted the fates enough, so I decided to actually try to buy it. Problem was, I had about 1K gold at the time, and it costed 9K. Solution? Town-scum for village idiots and drunks to kill (without using many game turns so the RoSlaying doesn't disappear). One Battle-Scarred Veteran didn't carry and money, but carried 18 Rounded Pebbles. I had one SoIdentify left, so I figured, why not? I might be able to use these with my Sling.

They turned out to be...

18 Rounded Pebbles of Slay Demon (1d2) (+3, +2). I quickly sold these to the weapon smith and made myself a quick 11K, which which I bought the ring.

Now I can actually hit things worth a slight damn!

Restarting, except I'm going to turn on the random quests for Princess rewards. Without those, diving just doesn't seem to have much meaning.

Ye gods, and I thought I was a masochist. I can sympathize with the point-n-curse death; I've died to those more often than I like to think about, and with more HP that you probably had at the time. Good luck.

Ok, after losing a very promising Loremaster possessor/barehanded build, I decided it was time to return to Impossible. ^^

The Barrow Downs level 1 princess was quite tough... it was Vort the Kobold Queen, and I used up both of the scrolls of teleport I had with me at the time, before finally killing her. I got a Blessed Whip that sold for 20k, and with that money I bought myself a nice RoDamage from the Black Market.

Got bored searching for stairs in the Void, and decided to play this a bit more. Must have died a good 20 or 30 times before I got this character.

He had really good initial luck (whichi s really important for a Hermit Yeek Sorceror). The initial startup item I grabbed from the Bree Black Market was a Ring of Accuracy (+16). Unfortunately with only 4 STR to start, I couldn't afford to go the Maggot Sling + Iron Shots route, so I went with a Short Bow and Arrows instead. Levelled up a little bit in BD 1, before tackling the quests. Nothing too noteworthy--the first few were rather easy, even with very low HP, thanks to speed bonus from Running. Then... reward from BD Lvl 3 was... the Long Bow (+10, +18) I'm currently wielding!

Still though, I was a bit stuck at BD Lvl 6, quest to kill Orfax, mostly due to the dangerous low HP (I think it was less than 30, at level 12 O_o), and his fairly fast speed.

So, I decided to take a detour then, and ran to the Orc Cave, and stair-scummed with ?oMagicMapping to get down a few levels, to see if I'd find any shops. Also, I was thinking that Deathwatch might be doable despite the low HP, because of the Bow (well, I'd probably have to give up Camm at that level, but just Maedros and Thakelloth would be great).

To my absolute delight, I discovered not one but TWO sets of dungeon shops, in Orc Cave 17 and 18! And better yet, BOTH OF THEM HAD POTION SHOPS! There was also a Jewelry Shop, so first I headed there and bought a Ring of Dex (+3), and another Ring of Dex (+4). There was also a "oResistance on sale, and I successfully nabbed it. I spent the 30k or so I had remaining buying 1 !oStrength and 1 !oConstitution. The Strength boosted by 2 to 6, which was a godsend, because the the burden suddenly went down by a lot (went from +1 speed to +3, I think..). Con didn't give me any bonus HP though :/

I waited around for the stores to recharge, and then tried to get away with stealing as many stat potions as I could. Caught on the first try on 17, but got 2 (one Str and one Dex) on the other before getting busted.

With that, I went and cleared (well, not really) Deathwatch and grabbed the three artifacts. That put my speed up to +10, (plus I also acquired a number of !oSpeed) which was then enough for me to kill Orfax, and clear out of the rest of BD.

Next stop: Old Forest, for possibly even more dungeon shops. Found one in Old Forest 24 with a Footwear Shop, so I waited around until a pair of boots of speed were in stock, and then nabbed those (which I'm still wearing). And guess what!? *Another* Potion shop! That was good news, since now I didn't need to wait for those two in Orc Caves to reset. At this point, I went for pure !oDexterity, to set up the stealing mill. Didn't try to steal, since money was starting to flow pretty easily around then.

Standard play for a bit (except being super-careful, since HP was still a huge issue). Found the junkart in Mirkwood that activates for Gain Corruption, which gave me the great idea of trying to get Balrog form. A good number of corruptions later, I finally got it (Thank goodness I didn't pick up Mephitic Breath! Though Aggravation is pretty bad.. ah well). Unfortunately, I forgot two things... first, you can't activate it until Lvl 35. And second, unlike in Hengband, Balrog form DOESN"T ACTUALLY CHANGE YOUR HITDIE!! ARGH!!!! So that was pretty useless.

After clearing Mirkwood, I headed to Rhun to see if there were possibly any more shops, and found another 3 set of shops! They possessed Scroll Shop, Yet Another Potion Shop, a Dragon Mail Shop, and a Speed Ring shop!

So, I scummed around a bit until I got my DEX up high enough (with a Morphic Oil, since DEX was permanently drained due to some corrputions), and went and grabbed those two ring.

Thus, in conclusion, killing Morgoth with this skillpointless character may not be so impossible anymore!! It's mostly thanks to the HUGE luck finding SIX sets of dungeon shops early though ^^
