Deepest character yet.. manathrust and essence of speed seem overly powerful. I'm going to clear the Illusionary Castle, then tackle the mines of moria, khazad dun, and the pits of angband..

I agree with you. Although to be honest, I am not complaining lol:) It is even better when you get Probability travel becuase that way you can go down all the levels, kill the high person and then shoot straight back up again. My Char is Etioseth and Onerag.... *Smiles* All Onerag needs is a Staff of Restore mana and I am sorted. Nice char though.

Does anyone know how to get the holy trinity? I want the The Mage Staff of Eternity????

Don't we all. But I wouldn't worry about that until after you've beaten Morgoth.

Read: you *can't* get any of the ultimates until after beating Morgoth.

You seem to be managing quite well... But I would get more HP if I were you, or some big breather is going to pound you into oblivion. Maybe switch Thrandruil for Hammerhand?

On 19.8.2003 01:36 wrote:
Probability Travel sounds a lot like the Thunderlord Weyr 'teleport to level' ability (based on your description). I used that to clear out Rhun and the Goblin Caves, as I was far overpowered for them at that time.

I hit 38 fairly quickly this morning (zapping high-level water beasties) and swapped out Thranduil for Hammerhand. At the time of dump, the loss of Int gave me 1% spell failure - not acceptable :-)

I've done a lot more exploring around the overworld map now, and there are a bunch of dungeons that I've apparently missed. How do people do these? It seems as if there's an overabundance of places to explore, in terms of being grossly overpowered/underpowered relative to the monsters within.

As far as HP .. I've got 330ish now with Hammerhand. I'm going to hold off on bumping sorcery for some time now..

On 19.8.2003 01:55 lorddimwit@hotmail.com wrote:
Not all dungeons are necessary for the completion of the game. Some of them I almost never visit (the Sandworm Lair, for example, has little treasure and less danger), and Numenor (have you found this one?) is just never ever worth it. Ditto for Cirith Ungol.

Many times, you just use the Thunderlords to teleport to the bottom of these dungeons and kill their guardians, otherwise you pretty much ignore them.

Strictly speaking, the only dungeons necessary for completing the game are Angband, Dol Guldur, and (possibly) Mount Doom.

Advice: keep an eye out for random artifacts that raise your HP by a certain percentage, and continually raise that CON. HP is as much (or more of) a concern as MP for sorcerers.

On 19.8.2003 01:58 lorddimwit@hotmail.com wrote:
That randart Chain Mail you've got in your house might be a big help... if you can bear to part with the Rag of the Wight. And you might consider swapping your ring of Spell for the Ring of Uvatha the Horseman (that's +5 to CON there).

On 19.8.2003 02:09 gte763u+angband@mail.gatech.edu wrote:
Yes, the randart chain mail is pretty tempting. When you wear a total armor weight above a certain value (such that you become encumbered), does anything happen besides your max spell point dropping?

There's also metal brigandine armor 'belros' (randart?) which gives acid/cold/elec immunity. How useful is that in the late game?

How does armor work in ToME? I know in vanilla (2.9.x) having over 150 armor was nearly impossible.. and I have right at 200 armor with stone skin :/ Is it worth trying to reach a certain value of armor?

Rag of the Wight will be a lot easier to part with once my intelligence reaches 40 without it..

More angband-y goodness. Prowling around the paths of the dead and then the tower of dul guldur yielded a couple of very easy levels. The thunderlord ambush turned out very poorly for them, and netted me an interesting suit of thunderlord rider armor, as well as a few miscellaneous artifacts and many suits of DSM. And levels 41 and 42 :-)

I'm starting to catalog and organize loot now. I have 10 skill points yet to burn - I'd like to dump them into sorcery, but I'm afraid of the hit point loss that would engender.

I can reach over 750 hp with the warhammer of life and the suit of +40% hp armor, albeit at steep cost in mana. Maybe once I get disruption shield, it won't be as critical.

Resistances are looking pretty good. Sound, nether, chaos, and disenchant yet to be obtained.. and there are a few artifacts stashed away that may be helpful there.

On 22.8.2003 04:20 lorddimwit@hotmail.com wrote:
Are you putting skill points into the Mana school? If so, why? I don't think it has any result if your Sorcery skill is that high.

I say your next target should be the Sacred Land of Mountains. Get the Thunderlord Coat of Trone and ditch that Rag of the Wight you're wearing. This should see you through until you can find the shield of Thorin and stop worrying about HP. (Judicious use of Elemental Shield in the Sacred Land of Mountains is mandatory. You know this spell, don't you?).

Keep your HP high and you should be fine. Also keep an eye out for any items that'll give you the ability to breathe underwater (only Helms of Water Breathing and Cloaks of Air, I think). You could probably pulp Ar-Pharazon at your level and claim 'Toris Mejistos' as your own. That would solve your mana woes.

On 23.8.2003 00:33 wrote:
No, the Mana school is still at 1.00. The mage staff he is using gives +60% mana.

What is the Sacred Land of Mountains? I haven't found that area yet. I've found the Thunderlord coat of Marda, which seems kind of interesting. No Trone yet.

I /knew/ elemental shield until some monster torched my spellbook of magical energy. I had thought it was fire immune like the other collected books :-/

The Phial of Undeath allows for underwater breathing, although I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to put that on.. 'Toris Mejistos' sounds interesting.

On 25.8.2003 23:38 lorddimwit@hotmail.com wrote:
Sacred Land of Mountains is far, far to the east of Lothlorien. Full of dragons mostly, guarded by Trone. It's not too tough, but remember Elemental Shield *all* the time when fighting...

btw, there's an old mage in Lothlorien who'll fireproof three of your books for you, and the Magical Energy book is a prime candidate... don't want to be left without Manathrust.

On 25.8.2003 23:48 gte763u+angband@mail.gatech.edu wrote:
I've done the wizard spire quest in lothlorien. What's irritating is that the quest still shows up in the quest listing, with 0 books still available to fireproof :/

I have a bad story about a trip down to the maze where I managed to ^D my fireproof book of beginner cantrips {!d!k} (being the only source of both damage and food) .. very well thought I would lose the character then.
