New Class: The Wild Talent. Essentially, they gain racial, class and mutant powers randomly as they level up. They also gain mutations. Its completely unbalanced at the moment, but I'm just play testing the first draft.

Abilities so far:
a) Magic Missile (Dark Elf)
b) Scare Monster (Yeek)
c) Phase Door (Gnome)
d) Smell Metal (Mutant)
e) Blaster (Android)

Mutation: Fiery Aura

Yay! I picked up Boots of Thievery +1 in the Orc Quest. That's exactly what they are there for :)

More powers:

f) Emit Radiation (Mutant)
g) Summon Tree (Ent)
h) Breathe Fire/Nether (Balrog)
i) Throw Boulder (Cyclops)
j) Swap Position (Mutant)

Another Mutation: Motion (FA and +1 Stealth).

Damage is a bit pricey for the cost, and this is after I bumped up some damages, and bumped down some costs. But I think it is OK for the time being. I've been picking Con to get my Demon Breath fail rate down, since that appears to be my best offense at the moment.

The various available powers probably need to be fleshed out more. I don't see any reason to limit abilities to just what player classes, races, and mutants can do, so I will probably add some more powers for 0.0.21. In the meantime, I guess 0.0.20 is ready to upload.

Holy Crud, was Hagen a bear. He really should have killed me, and I'm not sure why he came up short, but 5hp was the lowest he could bring me to. I burned my 20 !CCW and, in the end, my lone !Speed as well. But my main weakness was cleverly exploited by that nasty dwarf: Fire Resistance. He had it. I didn't. So, my flame arrows were only good for provoking Fire Bolt responses :) In the end, I had to take him down with melee, opening myself up to disenchantment. Also, he's no softy in that regard. But a chance for his lovely spear at this stage of the game could not be passed up, and was quite worth dying for.

So, I was thinking the innate Wonder spell was too powerful, but I might have just had a crazy run. Plus, the Chaos HM gets it a CL15 for 9sp, so I don't think I am too out of line with this. But occasionally, it does a dispel monster which is really nice at this stage. Versus Hagen, I couldn't risk it. He hastes and heals himself enough as is, and doesn't need my help in that regard.

Upgrading also switched my detect treasure power with detect monsters. I assure you, I did not do this on purpose! But, I wanted that particular slot to be a good utility slot, and detect treasure got moved to a weak utility slot.

The Wild Talent fights like an Imitator. But Imitators fight nearly as good as a warrior, so even though my powers are probably insufficient for a pure caster approach, my melee is not. And now that I scored Hagen, I gain a 4th attack and a lot more damage. Oh, and another +3 speed. So I think the quest death march can continue ...

On 30.11.2010 15:49 chris wrote:
OK, 0.0.22 now lists Wild Talents in the character dump. They are listed in the order acquired (except that Wonder is always listed first).

[CL23:DL22] 01:48
Hmmm ... I thought my melee was good, but The Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner tought me otherwise. He reflects everything I have to offer, except my breath, but he resists fire, so I was left hoping for nether. In the end, it was melee for a couple rounds, teleport and regen hp. I took about 1200 damage this way ...

CL23 gives Clear Mind, which is sweet. With Phase Door, I can now use my spells a bit more.

Well you wont be farming dragon caves with this one :).

Farming Dragon Caves is no longer possible/prudent in Chengband ... That got changed a while back. In fact, so many changes seem to hurt my playstyle: Spectre, Tower, Town Scumming, High Level Dungeon Skimming, New Monster AI ... I'm not sure I can win anymore :D

[CL25:DL24] 02:20
Pretty decent power so far. I spanked Grendel with my innate Wonder attack, though that took a while. I accidentally let him touch me once, and I received nearly 100hp of quick melee damage. But he has no distance abilities, and was easily handled. Clear Mind rocks!

Still working CL24, when I met Sangahyando. At CL25 level up, I was a little disappointed to get the Klackon's Spit Acid ability ... except that it is cheap, easy to cast, and not widely resisted. So I took down Sangahyando with distance acid, and a round or two of melee, and he dropped a Crown of the Magic! Nice :) Oh, and Grendel had dropped Thalkettoth with Disenchantment, so I'm liking my equipment so far.

I should wait a bit before doing more quests, but I really want to push for stat gain. I really need to get my Wisdom going!

On 30.11.2010 16:41 dzhang wrote:
Clear Mind is extremely powerful when combined with a decent ratio healing spell/power. You mentioned you were going to make such a power?

Wait, why can't you farm Dragon Lair anymore? (I remember farming it with my Duelist...)

On 30.11.2010 16:59 chris wrote:
Stair Skimming? Oh, don't try that :) But casual exploration of the top of the lair is still possible. I don't recall you ever being a skimmer though. The way it works is that you stair climb until telepathy picks up a Storm Wyrm (or similar), then you fight. Repeat.

Yes, there are good offensive powers coming ... even *great* ones! Also truly nice abilities are possible. Even things you might not expect!

Damn! I swapped out Shards/Disenchantment for the Poison resistance of the Bee Master, which also gives ESP humans and animals. But the DL30 questor was none other then Body-Building, the Emperor. He's fast, has 1200hp, breathes shards for 200 (plus deep cuts) and Punches to Knock you out! And blind too ... Oh, he does teleport to, so the blind/stun/knockout combo would probably do me in. He's a pretty tough draw, about 10x worse than Rogrog who I just bested, though with slight difficulty since he resists my acid attack. So even if I had shards resistance, I don't think that would have been smart. Maybe if I had haste as well?

Anyway, time to park it at DL30 for a bit. I've already scored potions of Int and Dex, but I'm thirsty for more!

On 30.11.2010 19:05 Antiguard@gawab.com wrote:
I wonder if you would do more damage with a bow than any of those wimpy wild magic attacks? With imitator skillz you should get pretty nice skill altho no increased shooting rate i suppose.

Its not that bad to run around dragon cave even without stair skimming. Just teleport everything away that you dont like. If that dont work teleport yourself or panic mode to recall and re-enter?

On 30.11.2010 19:30 chris wrote:
Nah ... even with my good bow of velocity, my shooting topped out at 44. I could have enchanted more for damage in the 60's, but that's not as good as my offense and would rapidly drain my gold. Arrows only hit one thing, my breath can hit dozens of monsters at full strength. My acid is more deadly, and is a ball effect. Plus, arrows miss, get destroyed, etc. I could put on spell power and do as much 110 with my breath, but I prefer to have a strong melee option as well. This character is currently very powerful for this level. I'm doing 30-40% more damage than a mage could hope to do, and a mage could not melee at all while I fight about as good as a rogue.

[CL31:DL31] 03:56
Phooey! I got the worst possible choice for CL31. But with Eat Magic, I'm not eager to scramble my talents any time soon, if ever. Experience courtesy of your friendly neighborhood granite wall.

On 30.11.2010 20:17 dzhang wrote:
Whoa... the Klackon's Spit Acid ability is actually a ball? And actually useful!?

Dave <= feels ashamed, since Klackon is one of his favorite races...

On 30.11.2010 20:28 chris wrote:
Its always been a radius 2 ball at CL25. But I doubled the damage output for Cheng ... so no, probably it was not useful before. I'm trying to make racial powers at least somewhat useful since most of them aren't worth a second look. For example, doing 20hp for 15sp with 40% fail kind of crap.

Klackon Spit Acid is a CL9 power, but I placed it in the CL25 Wild Talent slot since the extra damage and scarcity of resistors makes it more valuable.

On 30.11.2010 23:52 chris wrote:

Well, I was a little frustrated by how my CL31 and CL33 level ups went. I tried to shuffle my powers with a !Polymorph, but only succeeded in messing up my mutations. So, I sacrificed my initial stats of:
18/120 Str
18/70 Int
18/70 Wis
18/120 Dex
18/130 Con
18/90 Chr

By drinking New Life, I re-rolled all my powers and picked up the Beam Cannon! Now, in order to forestall the inevitable cries about how weak this is lets compare what a CL31 Mage can do:

Life: Cause Medium Wounds for 17. Damage 14d8. Average about 60, but monsters resist nearly 60% of the time. Real damage about 24.

Sorcery: 0hp

Nature: Fire Bolt for 6sp. Damage 11d8. Average damage: 50. But resistance to fire is very common.

Chaos: Fire Ball for 16sp and 86hp. Chaos is the offensive realm par excellence, and it ain't even close. There's also an unresistable doom bolt that beams, but so does the cannon.

Death: Cloud Kill for 15sp and 85hp. Not bad, but its poison, and can't be targeted. It centers on you, so you must be in melee range.

Trump: Zip. Well, there is Trump Kamikaze, but that sucks.

Arcane: Zap for 1sp.

Craft: Zip.

Daemon: Fire Ball for 16sp and 85hp. Same as Chaos, but backup demon spells are pretty bad.

Crusade: The only real contender. Holy Orb for 14sp and 3d6 + 38. No damage to Good Monsters, 1/3 to neutral, double to evil. I'd prefer this spell any day of the week, of course even though it is less damage and often resisted.

And, Beam Cannon: 124hp of unresistable damage, in beam form, for 30sp.

Its a long slog up thru experience. I got CL31 in under 4 hours, but CL35 is likely to take another 5. However, things picked up a bit once I moved camp to the Anti-Melee Cave. Oh, its hairy. Whenever I detect Fallen Angels, Great Crystal Drakes, or Iron Liches, I need to flee! And fortunately, I can see Jack of Shadows coming telepathically. No way I could kill that guy just yet. I really really need to get lucky next level up. If not, it will be a long wait to CL41.

Grayswandir came quickly, as did a Ring of Speed (-7) and Boots of Annoyance (-6). Both are just as rare as positive speed boosts, so I felt cheated. But eventually, a Monastic Lich dropped a Ring of Speed (+4). So, with Hagen and improved Trickery, I'm sporting +10 base speed, which is pretty good.

Best kill so far: Judge Mortis. That guy can be quite nasty!

Cool ... I wasn't too sure about the liberties I'm taking with powers, but I'm shooting for something fun and different to play. I think your idea of a random spellcaster is a very good one. It is frustrating at times, since you might not get the power you want (provided you know what is possible), but that is where the shuffling comes in. And that can be frustrating as well, since there are so many slots, and to get what you want in one will cost you something good in others.

While playtesting this guy, I've been resisting the urge to revamp the ability table whenever I felt frustrated. I've also resisted the urge to make every ability in each slot of equal power and equal effect. This class should never play the same!

Anyway, its still a work in progress, and I am open to ideas and comments ...

Kokuo was a breeze, but I forgot I lost my Blink like a Gnome power, and could have used some short range teleport.

OK, I'll just completely spoil this class by continually shuffling powers. But after that Jack experience, I was back to DL41 of the Anti-Magic Cave and still challenged. I decided that Monk Posture was not what I wanted after all. No, I wanted Resist Elements!

So, off to the Vapor Quest to scum. At this point, my Saving Throw is too high for Nexus to stand a chance of working, so I had to endure about umpty-gadzillion Chaos Breaths. I picked up about 20 mutations, but only got my powers scrambled twice. I then discovered a bug whereby if you experience is drained when your powers scramble, you permanently lose that slot! A quick bit of code surgery to repair so that quaffing !RestoreLife would double check, and I picked up Resist Elements at last.

Some other goodies as well, including Holy Lance (double damage vs. evil) and a great big fire breath! Oh, and Eat Magic made a surprise come back appearance, and this time I can actually use it!

Normally, monsters get hp/3 for breaths but that would top out at about 300hp for a CL50 player. I tried hp/2 instead, but that looks a little strong for this point in the game. I'll try hp*2/5 instead. It should be a bit stronger then the other abilities in the slot, which are 170hp storms and such, only because everybody and their mother resists fire.

Gone are the days of the 2 hour Cloning Pits :( Well, I felt like I finally had enough to pull it off, and while challenging, it was not too bad. Ticked off Bokrugs started the fun by stunning me with bolts, and knocking my Wis down with vicious stun effects. The Its woke up immediately, so it was 6 on 1, and the stupid Dungeon Cleaners had me pinned in from the top. So, Eat Magic, Haste, and a bit of work to establish a foot hold.

If you can take melee, its better to snuggle up close to fight, even with distance attacks. So, I lured the Dagons up into the forest. They still summoned out of line of sight, but I managed OK. And the Holy Lance works just fine if your opponent is standing on a tree, so that is how I took them out.

The Queens died to big fire, of course, and the gadzillion fire ants? Hmmm ... scanning my talents, I see a Mana Bolt would do nicely. It would be a pain to melee them all, but the bolts did the job fairly quickly with macros, removal of disturbance options, and a separating chasm or two.

Only Frodo this time. But I also scored Thranduil, Bard and Faramir. By some freak accident, I can lose my resistance providing crown of the magi and still cover resist base. Telepathy is crucial, and poison resistance practically non-existent.

Nidhogg put the fear of god into me. Damn, he's brutal face to face, and with the new spell revenge, I was really scared to meet that guy. But I'm glad I did.

First, the level had Nappa nearby, and he woke up, got ticked off by my spells, and responded with nasty mana bolts. I was quickly down to just 100hp! Teleport, trudge back, try again. This time I stayed close, and managed OK.

Next, the level had a pit of Mature White Dragons. I couldn't pass them up, but didn't get much of interest other than a few potions.

Finally, I meticulously cleared the level. Nidhogg on the bottom, and just an AMHD to trudge thru before the battle of death. Except the AMHD nearly killed me ... I must have left a resistance hole open that he cleverly exploited, or something while my eyes were focused on the advancing dragon of death. Don't get distracted, not even for a minute!

So, Nidhogg at last. I figured spell revenge was better than melee, since I've taken 400+ from that guy in a single round before. He's ferocious! But his nether can do nearly as much, so distance was not safe either. In the end, I did the blast and teleport strategy, using my regeneration to avoid using healing potions. I'm glad I took him out, since he dropped some nice dragon wings that solve my levitation issues (Hello, Dragon's Lair!) as well as providing multiple key resists. Oh, and Soulsword too, but I think I'll stay with Grayswandir. And don't you know the one and only time I got Disenchantment breathed on me, it took a pval off Grayswandir! That was quite a while ago, and I'm still pissed off about it :D

Habu was an abort. I thought I might have a chance, but the battle went like this. I hasted up to +20 speed, put up double resistance, tunneled into walls for anti-summoning, and waited for him to get next to me to avoid provoking mana storms. First such attempt: Habu double moves, once to get next to me, once to mana storm. I teleport, forgetting he would follow, but his double move exhausted him, so I got a free turn to teleport him away. Second attempt: Habu gets next to me, I hit him with my best spell, which is 240hp of holy lance. He laughs, takes another double move, attacking and then ... you guessed it ... mana storm. All told, 550hp damage. Teleport Other and recall ... And all of that was pure Heng evilness, as spell revenge never got activated. I took 900hp damage all for the opportunity to get 1 spell cast against him for 240 damage. He has 10x my hp, so those are bad ratios. Extrapolating, I would take 24,000 hp damage to kill him! Of course, he doesn't usually spam double moves and mana storms that often ...

OK, let's do the Old Castle. It wasn't too bad, except the recent AC changes left me open to 500+ hp of melee damage from the Titans not once, but twice! OK, my AC was poor at 110, but still, that's harsh. 638hp down to 54hp in one round of melee? Ouch. I had forgotten to pick up ?MonsterConfusion, so it was tough. OK, I guess we are fighting in the open. And I managed to take both titans out with distance tactics, plenty of healing and teleport. The Iron Lich and I got into a spell trade off, but I won that battle. Although the stunning was annoying.

Hmmm ... I guess I better do a little work in the Dragon's Lair after all. This went smoothly, thanks to my _Healing. Eventually I spied Brand, the Mad Visionary, he was hung up behind a chasm as usual. So, we traded a thirty or so spells back and forth, me blasting for 240, him either doing darkness storms, fireballs, or healing himself. In the end, I prevailed, but he cursed on his way out. No summons. No statue. Just a lot of noise with curses, stat drain, stone to mud, raw mana, etc. And I gained a nice crossbow in the bargain, so I am quite pleased.

CL41 gives Psycho-Spear, but it runs off of Wisdom. I decided my AC was just too low, as were my hp, so I'm doing everything I can to buff, and that means biffing my Wis. The result: 46% fail, but Holy Lance is nearly as good anyway as long as I am fighting evil critters, so I'll just stick with that.

I'm probably going to tone down the Spell Revenge a bit. Its pretty brutal with Dragons and such. But I want to finish this guy at first, at least until he dies :D

So, I fat fingered Eat Magic and rather than attempting to drain rods of cold balls (k), I accidentally drained my staff of healing (m). Of course, it failed and blew up. That puts an end to distance dragon slaying, since each dragon requires 1 to 4 healing to kill, even with double resistance.

So, time to shuffle again :)

!Polymorph gave me nothing I like, and neither did my first !NewLife. My life rating was total crap before, which is why I decided to shuffle at this point. My second !NewLife gave a good mix. Android Rockets which run off Strength for good offense, and I got back Resist Elements. I lose Eat Magic, but gain Lightning Eagle and Ninja Quickwalk. This, I can live with. Only 4 attacks sucks, but the eagle rocks! 4 new mutations gives 2 attacks and resiliency, but I lost my extra legs.

Time resistance is pretty nice, and I boldly spanked a pack of time hounds just to show off. Still, I'm not sure this robe is better than Isildur for me, since it forces me to shuffle equipment unfavorably, and I already had the other resists.

Who says Random Wraithform isn't useful? Well, so far, every Amberite has cursed, and the streak continues. First, there is Julian, my questor. I took him out with my Android Rockets from a distance. The slight tweak to retaliation was unnoticeable on that guy, and while you might think his retaliatory attacks were weak, I assure you, they are not! He's got painful 150hp water bolts. OK, not exactly top tier, but not something I want to take 20 or 30 of either! He cursed, of course, and drew forth Bleys, Rinaldo, and Ar-Pharazon. I teleported, destructed Bleys along with a Nightcrawler, and took out the weak Ar-Pharazon. I was resting up for Rinaldo when Wraith kicked in, so I took him down easily. He cursed, of course, and got a Cyberdemon who took a free turn with a rocket. Teleportation effects had me out in the open, but the 50% damage reduction reduced that rocket down to a mere 250hp. With all the other guys around (about 50+ summons), that could easily have proved close to fatal without the wraithform.

I think I'm done killing Amberites. Its just far too risky ...

Spell revenge is still totally brutal, even after the adjustment. It makes the game very challenging for a pure spellcaster. You'll need to adjust your tactics a bit, and if you are going to fight from a distance, then be prepared to teleport/heal very quickly.

"Spell Revenge" is perhaps a misnomer. The idea is that if you blast a monster from a distance, then it will prefer to respond with spells rather than moving towards you. But, if it is already next to you, then it will behave normally. So, you might try to just fight close to your opponents, but that is hard too as many monsters are brutal with melee. Reflection is also more valuable now ...

CL47 came fairly quickly thanks to Slayer, and I've learned to use Lightning Eagle virtually every battle, despite Slayers decent intrinsic slays. I gained a decent Healing spell that runs off of wisdom, so I'm left scrambling to raise wisdom any way I can. I think the fail is now manageable, so I'll live with biffed offense for a bit. Probably, I need to start using Rockets more, and melee less anyway.

Even Create Trees is extremely useful! Still, I really wanted an end game caliber offensive attack, and the 350hp Android Rocket was not enough.

So I re-rolled. All in all, I'm happy with the outcome. I lose my resiliency and double resistance, my quickwalk and tree creation. But I keep Healing II, gain Starburst a la Raphael, Sterilize and Destruction, Eat Magic and Stone to Mud. It will take me a while to readjust to these new talents, but I think this is it for the end game! Anyway, Loki was a big challenge. With his charge draining, I could not carry my _Speed, so I was quickly reduced to fighting at normal speed. He kept summoning Amberites and Cyberdemons, and also spamming GoI, so I kept teleporting and luring. Eventually he fell with nary a double mana storm to his credit.

Combat, I couldn't even touch, so I gave up. He is immune to all my spells, so I tried Musou posture for the counter attack, but whiffed 20 for 20, and decided I lacked the patience.

Eat Magic is really nice, but not being a Mage/High-Mage/Sorcerer, I get something like double the chance of blowing things up. Still, I think I have enough rods to hold out to the end game, and things will get easier if I ever score the Jewel of Judgment.
