So far, no bugs ... Knock on wood :)

I just lucked into a 34k Great Escapes in the BM, which, as luck would have it, I could afford. I had to sell my Trump Lance to get it, but at 30lbs I wasn't really able to wield that weapon anyway. So we'll just need to see if FA proves troublesome!

So far, I'm enjoying the detection talents immensely. I can't really pick pockets or set traps just yet ... I guess I need a bit more Int/Exp.

Hmm ... I had a hard time conquering the Yeek Caves at L21, which is downright embarrassing. About a dozen runs thru my meager ~200hp before I could finally get next to Boldor, at which point it was (almost) all over, of course. I did have to shoot him in the back after a single round of melee. But those stupid Master Yeeks that summon out of line of sight are hugely annoying. And the fact that Orfax spawned nearby didn't help matters ... After 100+ yeeks slain I was wondering why Boldor's entourage was so gosh darn big!

I managed to buy FA at the armoury and Resist Acid in the BM, so I guess the Icky Queen is next up. I wonder: Can I set her up with traps? She's is fairly nasty!

I'm hanging on for dear life, hoping for miracle stat potions. Finally, at the 2.5 kkill mark, I managed to burgle an unidentified potion out of a vault. I had to tip toe by a Death Drake to get it, but it was my first stat potion all game: Charisma. Eh?

So when the next level had another vault, with a Puce potion inside, I decided to do more of the same. I round the corner, treading as softly as possible when Shriek! Shriek! Shriek! The result is what you see here as a Phantom Beast came through the wall and meleed me for 211 damage! AC 62 equals insta-death I guess, but fortunately the beast was one square away when that mushroom (who was apparently on sentry duty) sounded the alarm.

On 29.8.2012 16:07 chris wrote:
Actually, it wasn't all the Phantom Beast's doing. I went back to look at messages and saw that a mature blue dragon breathed on me, and a Berserker also wailed on me. It all happened so fast!

I'm hanging out deep in the Giant's Hall. So far, I've managed 2 !Chr and 1!Int, but have also managed to purchase 1 !Str and 1 !Dex. Only paying 52k for a stat potion is very nice :)

I'm waiting for HL or a bit more Con before doing The Barrow Downs. Probably I could manage it OK right now, but there is no rush.

On 30.8.2012 15:09 chris wrote:
[CL31:Barrow Downs] 05:04
Con: Found one, bought one, chose one. So even without Hold Life, I felt it was time for the Downs. Armed with my Great Hammer of Order (24d1) and a bit of restore life, I entered the quest. My stealth was adequate for the first couple barrows, but after that the wights started waking up, and it was much too risky to attempt 20 or so cursers out in the open. Thus I had to forgo my 120hp sneak attacks, but it scarcely made a difference. The only annoyance was that lack of HL meant I gained practically no experience for my efforts. Though I did manage a rather nice glaive ...

Its a little unfortunate to have so much damage so early. Why bother with traps, pilfering and trickery when the direct approach is so gosh darn overwhelmingly effective? Most everything, even mature dragons, dies in a single round, or perhaps two. Not even Genji interests me ...

I'll wait for Chaos resistance and a bit more intelligence before the Cloning Pits.

[CL34:Cloning Pits] 07:35
Good thing I am testing! I started out the Cloning Pits with the Jurts and thought it odd they were all teleporting away after a single round of attacks. Actually, they were dying, but not dropping any loot! So there are Burglary bugs after all :(

Anywho, I pushed a quick emergency patch for 0.0.113. Hopefully I'm the only one who hit this bug.

Otherwise, the quest was straightforward, other than the Queen Ants and their new friends, all of which were woken up by a random Archvile spawn. I did manage drops from all 3 Its and Gachapins, and those are the ones that count: Soulsword, Colluin, Gandalf.

The Glaive is better than Soulsword, but I need the resists ...

Master of both the Lonely Mountain (easy) and the Giant's Hall (hard). Utgard was nasty, and required 2 !Healing to kill despite all my damage output. OK, my accuracy is wanting and probably I should have used heroism and chanting, but those summoned giants/titans began tossing boulders anyway! Ouch!

I really feel like skimming the Dragon's Lair, given my Eye for Danger and Colluin. Why is that so much fun? Perhaps I need to design a new dungeon instead?

On 31.8.2012 03:11 chris wrote:
My idea is for a new "Arena Dungeon". No vaults. Only permanent walls. No wandering monsters. Every room is a circular arena with a single monster in the center. No monster groups or hordes. But every monster is allocated from a level at least MIN(50, DL-5). Thoughts?

Easy enough to code and try out. With my nice stealth, I can fight 1v1 thought I don't dare go any deeper.

After briefly dual wielding, I'm back with the glaive for more melee beat down. Listed damage is 20% less than with dual wielding but probably 60% higher in practice due to improved accuracy.

I'm liking the Arena dungeon! One doesn't have to look too hard to find a worthy foe :)

[CL37:Old Castle] 09:40
I made a couple rather large mistakes and am lucky to have survived!

First, it all began when I ran into Jack of Shadows in the Arena. Now, he will probably be quite common there, I figure, so lacking permanent detection, or darkness resistance, or blindness resistance, and only sporting base speed +4, I figured his +55 speed highness would make a quick meal of meal of me with ~280hp darkness storms. If I don't cover darkness, at least I should cover blindness so I can make a quick escape, no? And Vorpal Blade should own the Old Castle, no? Well ... almost.

Things got hairy when I realized I forgot any source of stone to mud. While digging for cover, Lesser Titan #1 came over and Super Summoned (tm). Of course, I had to flee, caught sight of Yibb-Tstll as a random spawn, and promptly began hallucinating. The level was still nearly filled, and I ended up having to kill the Iron Lich while hallucinating (and taking a nice ~300hp breath as Colluin was still charging). That took a healing, and luckily, I regained my normal vision shortly after (I seem to recall vastly reducing the duration of hallucination in Chengband so it no longer lasts forever but is still *very* life threatening).

So, that's two mistakes (no Stone to Mud and Chaos resistance ... or at least some form of Curing). Mistake #3 was no shards resistance, but while 1 of the Lesser Titans fired a boulder, both Greater Titans declined the honor, being quickly confused. Also, I got my revenge on Yibb, shredding him with a 5 star sneak attack which must have done 1200 or so damage. Sweet :)

Now I still prefer a ring of damage +12 to darkness resistance, so its really my fault if Jack gets me after all.

Damage: 650 -> 470. Ah well, it was bound to happen. Exit RoDam +18, Boromir and 2-handed wielding. Enter RoS +8, Faramir and Celegorm. That just leaves Chaos resistance as a gaping hole, and I seem to recall a pair of rand-art boots with precisely that. But I'll wait for Sacred Knights I guess, unless the hallucination-mutation-horror-confusion becomes more than I can bear.

The Arena is quite difficult at this point. Perhaps it is time to move on?

Most hated monster? Why, the Greater Titan, of course! Man, those guys are nasty!

On 1.9.2012 19:08 chris wrote:
[CL46:DL56] 13:44
Damage: 470 -> 630. I can hit 950 damage in a joke pose, but that requires enduring aggravation, the ancient foul curse, and +3 base speed.

I'd like to artifact something, but the only thing I can think of is my dragon helm, and I sort of need the +3 fighting stats from Hammerhand. I guess I'll just hold out a bit longer to see if a more obvious choice presents itself. Its a shame, too, since I nearly died walking over to Mount Olympus!

On 1.9.2012 22:40 chris wrote:
[CL48:DL67] 14:24
Nooooooo! I lost patience and artifacted my helm after all, getting a nice roll but not what I needed. In particular, I can't give up the Con boost. And immediately after that, I pick up the following shield, a perfect fit with 4 key resists:
a Dragon Shield [8,+20] {LiDkShSoNtNxDi}

*Grumble*

Somehow, I'll need to conquer The Arena but it won't be easy given the mighty guardian ...

I conquered the Dark Cave for my Book of Shadows and that allowed me to conquer The Arena. Except I can't seem to conquer The Arena. Apparently, dungeon guardians have to be unique of they keep re-spawning. And given the incredible nature of this dungeon's reward, that is rather bad ... For now, everybody is on the honor system!

On 2.9.2012 03:11 chris wrote:
[CL50:DL112] 15:45
I fixed the Arena problem by cloning the monster entry and marking the new entry as unique. To test, I had to kill the guardian again, and it spawned next to a random monster of the same kind. Now, if you guessed the Arena guardian than you *know* that was not a pleasant situation, and it took 15 healing to kill one of the guys (30 pokes with the needle to work????). I gave up on the second. And donated my duplicate reward for good measure.

Now, on to Mount Olympus! Hah, like I stand a chance versus the mighty olympic pantheon. Perhaps if the dungeon were littered with ambrosia?

On 2.9.2012 03:21 chris wrote:
Wait, I see. Making a monster a dungeon guarding *forces* one to make the monster unique. But making the monster unique makes the only (practical) way to kill the monster fail to work. Oy! I guess I can fix that with another hack, layering in a bit more spaghetti ... That explains why my second go at The Arena was so fantastically *hard* :-P

[CL50:DL119] 16:10
Wow, a PGR that isn't pelting me with mana storms. I'm not quite sure what to do with it, being my *first* ring of power and all. But I think I will eventually have to use it as its powers are simply too great to resist. Should I go for the J? I could probably do it!

On 2.9.2012 04:19 chris wrote:
[CL50:DL100] 16:22
Yeah, piece of cake! This is the first winner since my recent slurry of changes, and I must say I like the new, big, bad J. Its just that the One Ring and Vorpal Blade were *way* more than he could handle. Seriously, it doesn't get any better than that ... Well, the J dropped some +2 'zerker gloves that I guess would have increased my damage output, but it scarcely mattered.

The only thing I can say is killing the Serpent really works up an appetite :D
