OK, there's Destiny. Too bad I won't ever be playing a Broadspear Weaponmaster ever again ;)

Also, I had a super nice +3 stealth defender with poison and sound resistance that I barely talked myself into selling. I got 30k for it, and used the proceeds to buy a +16 damage ring which is huge. But the defender was heavy enough to cause me to lose an attack, and that was the deciding factor. But now, I guess the point is moot? Sell all weapons for the rest of the game? I can live with that ...

Uh oh! I killed Farmer Maggot and the game crashed! Please do not download 0.0.104 and if you are one of the 5 people in the world who already did so, you will need to upgrade if you plan to kill Farmer Maggot or Lion Heart. If they drop an excellent weapon, 104 will divide by 0!

Sorry about that ...

Early Chaos DSM satiates my disenchantment paranoia, but leaves me lacking resist base. To compensate, I dove into the Barrow Downs super early (about the 1h mark), skipping both the Logrus Master and the Vault, of course. Both were probably doable, but offer nothing by way of reward.

The upside of my Farmer crash was the game restored with me in the DE Lords quest, having completed it. My first Phial replacement was lame, only giving +1 strength (and light, chaos and conf resist, but I have those), so I got another roll. This one is better, since it has Cold and Sound, but ain't so great either.

It summons. It summons. It blinks away. You are blinded. It summons. It summons.

In the end, "it" was that stupid Greater Hell Magic Mushroom Were Quylthulg and the blinding was due to a pack of darkness hounds. But I perservered, teleporting as soon as I could see, and took down that Magic Annoyance ... to get one of the few weapons I'll consider in lieu of Destiny: The Glaive of Pain. Certainly, this weapon is superior but my Blood Seeking seals the deal, granting a broad 2x slay. That's 710 damage at the moment, and I suspect the weight of the glaive knocked be back to only 2 attacks base or I'd be good for about 830 damage per round. Of course, with my scant hp I don't have many rounds left in me ...

Wow! And you thought rings of attacks were a dim remnant of a glorious past. In fact, my last winning warrior never found a single one, as far as I remember. But here is a +2 ring at a ridiculously early depth!

Now, if my luck could just translate into the realm of stat potions. 4 Int, 3 Wis, 3 Chr and 1 Con so far in the dungeon. But I've managed to buy a Con and Dex in the BM. I really need some more strength so I can use that tasty glaive!

Improvement! A tussle with New Life finally gave above average Str/Con with so so life rating. For a lucky guy, this is important as the -2 stat biffs are pretty huge. And a 'd' nest was good for Corwin, Julian and 4 or 5 stat potions which was enough for me to take on the Cloning Pits where, for the second time in a row, I get the one, true, ultimate reward. The RNG must be feeling guilty about stiffing me on the boots 30 times in a row ...

Damage output is only a mere 967 + 270 = 1237. All I need now is the Feast!

I'm using a shield! I'm using a shield! Well, I really need to cover poison and nether resistance if I am to descend any deeper in the Anti-melee caves. Judge Mortis is L41 and breathes like crazy, so one needs to be prepared.

I'm tempted by The Old Castle but perhaps I should level up a bit for more hp first?

Admittedly, those last few dumps were joke poses, with me spamming cuts in the town. But this is the real deal! First, Beld, then Ulik, then Shudde, then The Stormbringer ... All brought about similar situations to this, with me wondering that I would not survive another round, but dishing out 1000+ for the death blow, followed by some quick cauterization to stop my bleeding.

Now that is definitely enough quests for the moment.

Oh, dear. Bubble Vault on L50 of anti-magic caves. I burned a ?Destruction to rid Hermes, and this proved to be quite the profitable move. When the dust settled, I scored some amazing equipment. I had to pass on an 8d4 katana as Bahamut was squatting on it. Also, some Cesti were well guarded by a Cyberdemon and I lack shards resist, so those rockets do full 800hp (More than I have) and cause Deep Gashes, meaning sometimes you take 900hp all at once (More than I have). Biketal was guarding an Elven Cloak (I want Jack!) and a GWoMC was guarding some dragon gear. But I made away with most everything else.

9 attacks for 1462+270=1732 damage! I really should wait until L37 before posing since I get 2 more attacks. Or perhaps L40 when I net the Feast for an extra +35 damage per strike. But I simply can't resist :D

Well, I have the Feast now, and I could post an uber damage show-off dump with crazy damage. But I decided I will wait for L49 when I can get 3 more attacks.

At the moment, Blood-Knights seem pretty over-powered, though I suspect that is due to my early +2 attacks and glaive of pain (at what, 2.5 hours in?). But OP in a fun way, and I'm sure I'll mess up, or some Big Bad Breather (tm) will get an untimely jump on me before my buffs gain the upper hand.

Achilles ain't no Terror, but the ultra-rare, ultra-elite, ultra-important resistance of Shards is must at this point. In fact, Angband quests below L50 are not advisable without it, as that is about the time Amberites start showing up.

On 23.7.2012 02:24 chris wrote:

Ah, crap. -400 damage thanks to the loser Bloodrip ;)

Actually, I made it so a Blood-Knight might actually be able to use ... or want to use ... this sword. It was feeding waaaay too often. And vampirism is a nice survival attribute for this class, though the healing sort of keeps a lid on the Blood-Knights otherwise grotesque growth in melee prowess.

Another crazy DQII artifact has me reaching for my nerf bat, but I'll resist. My shield had ShNxDi but picked up StDxCnSl;AcElFiCoPoFe, which is pretty nuts, except that AcElFiCoPo can come in a single lucky lump sum at the end (something like 1 in 72). You get charged extra powers for this, but if it happens on your last power then you don't lose anything.

I can definitely see that I probably won't survive to the end with this guy. My most recent close call was with the Mana Storming Mouth of Sauron. He dispelled magic and stormed me down to 150hp. And its not like I have a healing option, so I attacked again (He was at 2 stars and I was dishing out 1500+ damage thanks to my amazing gauntlets) but he survived! Fortunately, he chose to run away, so I had time to zap my 2 *hugely* unreliable 250hp rods of healing and recast my buff spells, putting the Feast on again, of course. After 30 or so rounds, he recovered his courage, came back at me and I annihilated him.

The other iffy proposition is the dreaded Amberite Blood Curse. I'll make sure I have double resistance up, but its simply a matter of time before one of those gets me. Corwin had me down to 250hp, and I finished him off, feasting myself down to 150 or so. He cursed (Don't they all?) but didn't summon for some reason, so I live to tell my tale.

I really need more hp, but can't bring myself to grind for the xp to level up. Another 140hp would really mean something!

Cantoras gets my vote for the top ten list! That guy is deadly with plentiful triple moves! Fortunately, I was carring 4 !*Healing* at the time but only need to use 2 ... Pazuzu, Draugluin and Kronos are all wimps by comparison.

I have my Blood Pool now, but a 100hp healing potion ain't gonna save my butt in a pinch. Let's see:

* !Blood = 100
* !Healing = 150
* -Healing = 250 but virtually impossible to use.
* !*Healing* = 500 (Now you're talking)
* !Life = 1000 (The real deal)

I'm guessing I need 10-15 !Life and a good stockpile of 40 or so !*Healing* to have a chance. Fortunately, I have this Jewel courtesy of Dworkin (The only way I ever seem to get it, btw) so I can, if so inclined, grind for resources. Given the way future quests are likely to go, that's a pretty good idea ...

Macros of \eE1\eE1\eR9999\r and \eAa\eI/a while standing on the doorway to the General Store allowed me to shuffle every 3s or so.

I couldn't quite manage enough speed for my comfort, so I had to trade in my attack ring for more speed. As expected, this netted me a huge loss in power, and in fact, I couldn't get 5 blows until I was in risk of one shot death. So rather than prolong my gathering, I decided I was powerful enough for the Serpent after all, especially once I swapped out the weak little Bloodrip for what has to be one of my favorite all time weapons, even if it does aggravate.

I started Hungry but ended full, probably because I had to drink 2x the normal amount of potions, and more since I somehow thought it would be smart to use my 30 100hp potions of blood first. Silly ...

And really revenge aura on master tonberry 70d30 ... brilliant. Same goes for stormbringer. That shit needs to get biffed as you would say. Are ninjatonberries still automatic hit always with their eat item attack and revenge aura so even AC will not help at all? Every player who melees them and hits is instadead.

Day 163 is from 130+ days of shuffling Bloody Moon :) Geez, I must have shuffled a thousand times or more hoping for just Blindness resist and vampirism. Also, I usually spend 8 or 9 game days stocking up on bolts for the Sewer quest since I am a munchkin ... But town scumming is no longer possible so day counts don't reveal too much.

Revenge Aura is indeed nasty ... Leave Master Tonberry alone. But monsters will only retaliate for as many blows as they have. Since Tonberries only get 1 blow, they will only retaliate once, even if you dual wield. (And I don't think ninja tonberries automatically hit). However, it does set you up for "double moves" where you attack, get retaliated on, and then it attacks. So it feels like a double move even if it ain't, unless it is, and then it feels like a triple! The ones that I have the most trouble with are Kenshirou and Atlas. Stormbringer isn't too bad if you shoot him. And like I said, leave tonberries alone!

On 25.7.2012 02:36 antiguard@gawab.com wrote:
Bah monsters that cant be killed is just bad design. Kensi and atlas are much more reasonable since their damage is not insane. Stormy at dl46 and ~500+ damage for retaliates + own attacks @ 20 speed + bleed / turn will 1 shot most chars around that level.

Donno about ninjas at least comment says AC does not reduce attack damage at all. Back in 0.033 on my warrior when i fought them they NEVER missed.

On 25.7.2012 03:13 chris wrote:
I do share your sentiment. In fact, I don't like the Olympians at all. But I never fight Nodens or The Unicorn either and some characters really can't kill Nodens, as he spams 550+ healing every round when wounded, and 550+ damage is greater then many (most?) characters can hope to match. I've learned to just ignore certain monsters and not try to kill every one I meet.

Ninja Tonberries only hit for 30d15, and are quite tame by comparison (Tonberry = 50d30, Master = 70d30, Ninja = 30d15). A retaliation might be good for 240hp and and attack for another 240hp ... They shouldn't kill you. And they drop great so actually, I sorta like those guys :)

Man the xp grind is horrid now especially with my badass combos. However someone should rework the xp costs according to class power and not some ancient D&D experience scale. Many of the weakest classes have huge costs and most powerful ones are low. Berserker/mauler/warrior/samurai should cost most and many weak caster classes least.

On 25.7.2012 19:13 chris wrote:
I'm thinking of taking warriors down a notch as they present some melee balance issues. Most classes are 5 attacks max but warriors get 7? I think they would be fine with just 6 given that they are also more likely to be able to dual wield successfully so their 7 blows ends up being 14. Its hard to balance that when other classes only get 5.

Maulers seemed OP but I'll wait for some more play on those guys.

'Zerkers aren't a serious class in my book ... we could double their attacks and I wouldn't mind ;)

Samurai are too strong, but their elemental attacks don't work vs. the Serpent so maybe they are OK?

Blood Knights are a bit hard to win with as lack of healing forces you to teleport when in danger. You are basically a 4 attack class with limited 5 attack capabilities, but you don't want to push your luck when 7 attacks show up. This guy was incredibly OP early on thanks to a +2 attack ring, and that just cements my prejudice against those rings in terms of game balance.
