I really don't understand why nobody plays Red Mages ... I mean, look how powerful they are!!! :)

Seriously, they are not one of the stronger classes, but as you can see, they can melee just fine, and have every utility spell under the sun. I just need to get my Intelligence up, but, alas, I still seek my first boost to that stat.

This guy is rolling! I just need to beware of 5% fail spells failing at critical moments (like Resist Environment as a Hell Wyrm hastily approaches). Its nice to have a bit of a mana buffer, and this is thanks largely to a potion of *enlightenment* and a 160k amulet of intelligence. I'm pretty sure the Castle reward is Gogo, however, so perhaps that gold was wasted?

Level up. Stat up. Gear up. This, I will do here, at the top of the Dragon's Lair!

Well, The Old Castle was worth a shot. The top tier reward is off the charts for this class, but I got the crappy pendant instead :(

Female characters have an unfair advantage in Heng/Cheng: They may wear the Cloak of Heavenly Maiden which aggravates for male characters! Levitation and Blindness resist are very nice, though it pains me to swap out my damage ring. Ah well, I'll just need to be patient for that Healing spell I guess.

I guess I'll have to add:

The Filthy Rag of the Couch Potato [1, +15] (-4)
-4 Charisma. Resist Poison and Nether. Free Action.
Activates for Stinking Cloud every turn.
Aggravates if player is female.

We need to have parity between the sexes!!

Rohirrim at last, so I can lose the yucky shield, restore melee accuracy and deadliness, and even swap back in a damage ring. So, we can just disregard that last wimpy character dump, no? :D

Must have belonged to Bahamut!

I finally got around to shuffling my life rating up ... 122%, though it took nearly 100 judgments to get it. One downside is that if you are like me, you probably scummed for very high starting hp bonus, and that gets lost when your life is re-rated. Still, I net about 50hp or so in the deal, and who knows when that will come in handy.

I'm no match for Rao, so Kenshirou is completely out of the question. I'm seriously considering rockets at some point, since a 520 rocket is the equivalent of 900 or so melee damage, and while I'm sure I can achieve the former, the latter is squarely out of the question!

Tired of chronic stat drain, I opt for Anarion ...

Tiamat and Yamata down. The former required no resources, though I just managed to kill her before sp ran out (Healing costs 42). The latter forced me to heal on my first two moves, then finally, graciously, allowed me to attack. While the Yamata is more fragile than Tiamat, it is much more deadly!

I'm so close to starring out my last key stat, but after clearing a couple of multi-hued dragon pits, I was unable to muster a single !Int, so I'll just go ahead an post imperfection. Well, my equipment is still a bit lackluster as well, but the game is still early.

Hmmm ... I got permanent stat drain to both Dex and Con from someplace, and I'm not sure where. No matter, I quickly found the requisite potions to re-max out my stats.

Wahha-Man was a tough draw for me, as I caught him 200k shy of L45 and the coveted Glyph of Warding, so I had to take him on and face the full fury of his crushing blows! He hits just as hard as the Destroyer, but is not nearly so powerful. Still, I killed him without requiring any resources, so I'm not doing too bad.

I just completed DQII for the art which yields a useful cloak, boosting Int and resisting shards. And some stealth at last ... But now I really need an extra attack ring, so I'll start scouting L80 for a good one.

Hmmm ... I was just thinking that _Healing and the uber sorcery Recharging spell might be more efficient then the spell. I'm up to 5 staves, which is 20 activations for the equivalent of 840sp, but stupid charge drainers are everywhere, and it simply gets so tedious to be constantly dropping your goodies ...

Can't seem to take the stairs down, despite my best effort. Every level is infested with uniques/artifacts/vaults. Still no rockets, but the last vault gave Thorin and Thor. Not Thror, which was what I thought (metal shod boots) but Thor. With +4 key stats, 6 resists, and ... anti-magic. Damn. At least it didn't aggravate like every other good artifact.

Scariest moment ever was one something commanded me to return inside a vault (There were 4 amberites and an old sorcerer, all of which had the power, so I don't know who was the guilty party). I tried to activate *destruction* but failed, at which point the Tarrasque and Azathoth took there turns bringing me down to 300hp or so. Yikes! And the vault had been quaked up by some good vs. evil battle, so the cave grids lost their "icky" status. And I must say this is the first time I figured that using Dimension Door to gain entry into a vault is *extremely* useful! Hey, that icky stripping works both ways :)

Thorin costs me +10 damage, but I think it is worth it ... 2 immunities down, 2 to go!

GCV on DL81. I did pretty well actually, despite the fact that my lone _*Destruction* blew up on the first recharge attempt. I managed to fight thru some heavy hitters, like Klingsor, and was even giving Cantoras a go. I'm still waiting for decent equipment, so 300 melee damage was not enough for that guy. I just cast healing 4 turns out of 5, getting a chance to attack on the 5th turn, and not making much of it. Still, I got 4 stars off him before I had to leave, and Olympians started spawning everywhere. I think all of them but Zeus must have shown up, and I won't take them on at the moment, so I finally surrendered and cast Teleport Level.

Still on a rocket hunt, as that seems the obvious way to go with this guy. Dimension Door and rockets should be good fun :D

So, my last pose was for 804 melee damage, or about 480 effective damage. Funny, that's precisely what a rocket will do! So, after another GCV, and a really tough time vs. Kenshirou (toughest monster *slain* so far, except maybe for Wahha ... There are plenty tougher monsters not yet killed!), I think I'll switch things up. Not having to worry about melee damage/accuracy means I can play fast, defensive, and with incredible mana reserves (621sp)! I only need to swap Cambeleg for Magic Mastery, but I won't fight any more anyway, so this is hardly a loss.

I'd really like reflection, though ...

Oh, and its only a matter of time before 5% fail rates kill me. I had my 3rd close call this game vs Azriel when I tried to Dimension Door away from him at 580hp. Failed, and he took me down to 100!

Another GCV, this one with 5 !Resistance and 1 !*Healing* inside. So, that needs a code change, and the game now distinguishes between monsters with DROP_GOOD and vaults with great items. I guess I'll need to scum another GCV to test :D

This one was amazing, and I was triumphant despite burning my magic on the Tarrasque and then an undestructable Shub-Niggurath. Depleted, I was able to melee thru a few high uniques like Pazuzu, and I even killed Bahamut with my next to last disintegrate. Props to the Unicorn of Order for bringing the big dragon down to 0hp for me!!! But most big boys were led outside the vault and destructed. I recharged my twin destruction engine about 10 to 15 times without incident, so the last blowup was a fluke.

Now, I get even more device power!! I just need more rockets :D

I'll go ahead and retract my L50 = 25% done statement. While often true in Hengband (perhaps 50% is better) the new xp requirements make leveling up much more lengthy. 14.5m xp for L50 is steep, but I can tolerate it. Anything more than 20m xp is just too much ...

And Red Mages are incredibly powerful. At least this one is :)

20 hours for L50 from a (mostly) melee character? That's old school!

I found the Emperor Q with reasonable terrain, so I engaged my uber powerful Dimension Door, and proceeded to unleash a shard storm on its sorry butt. It immediately brought forth greater dragons (GWMC, Bile Wyrm and Ethereal Dragon) but that filled all remaining summoning squares, so I continued my shard blasting for an easy kill.

Dimension Door and Banish are among my favorite spells :)

Cool!

Lately I've been finding TMJ pretty daunting in Cheng. Late-game item generation in general could use some tweaks. Increasing rarity of cursed items across the board would help. Deep uniques that drop piles of "good" but not "great" equipment are also culprits, because "good-not-great" items are less likely to be useful than fully random items (which can turn up potions of Healing, etc). I feel that, as far as DROP_GOOD/GREAT item and Vault item generation are concerned, "nameless common" items could be phased out in favor of useful consumables as dungeon level increases.

Like, at level 6, Lagduf could still drop a +5 Two-Handed Sword, but at level 95, Lagduf should be much more likely to drop a Potion of Speed instead.

Some items could be freely allowed to be GREAT, such as Potions of Life.

The high-level rods, such as rods of healing/speed/restoration/perception, could be permissible (but still rare!) as excellent drops.

DROP_GREAT is exceedingly rare: Farmer, Lion Heart, Smeagol, Wormy, Robin Hood, It, Gachapin, GHMMWQ, Jack, Quachil, Santa, Tiamat, Norsa, Hela, Klingsor, Cantoras, Mephistopheles, Abhoth, Loki, Shuma, Oremorj, Kaschei, GWoP, Nodens, Nyarlathotep, Gothmog, Great Cthulhu, Sauron, Unicorn, Oberon, Morgoth, Serpent, Ringy, Babble, Combat, Dio, Zombified Serpent, Kenshirou, Bahamut, Nami, Dionysus, Pinky, Spaghetti, Ult. Magus, Ninja Tonberry, Master Tonberry, Variant Maintainer, Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Athena, Ares, Hermes, Apollo, Artemis, Hephaestus, Hera, Demeter, Aphrodite.

See, next to nobody has it :)

OK, I'll let *Healing*, Life, and Rockets count as great. But not potions of resistance!

On 5.1.2012 23:31 chris wrote:
I have more ideas for item generation, but I hesitate. Give too much *Healing* and Mass Genocide and the game gets easy ...

For TMJ, I lean heavily on the auto destroyer. Most everything gets registered for destruction except the stuff I want. Then, on killing a foe, I just walk over the loot which automatically picks up the stuff I want, and destroys everything else. Only artifacts survive! I make exceptions for boots (speed) and gloves (genji) as well as some dragon armor (PDSM, BDSM, Dragon Wings, etc). But not much else.

I stupidly picked a fight with Nodens and both nearly lost and nearly won. In the end, he gestured at my feet and that was that (no nexus resistance). Too many big bad guys around, as Nodens went nutso summoning Destroyer/Olympians/Raphael/Unicorn/etc. Still, I had him down to 1 star and blasted him with a rocket, which he must have barely survived!

Tired of The Destroyer showing up ad nauseam, I donned my Reflection and decided to risk a recharging spell during the battle. It only took one, which I prudently spent on my stockpile of Disintegrate. That guy is a wuss :)

Still working on thinning out the unique army that is Chengband!

I tangled with Hera and Zeus a bit, but gave up on both. Hera, I could take, but it would be tough. Zeus resists shards, so I didn't bother too much. Then, Oberon and the Serpent who are both much weaker. The annoying thing about the Serpent was Dispel Magic cut off my telepathy and apparently Morgy doesn't light up the way the Serpent does ... Actually, a quick perusal of r_info shows Morgy is shrouded in darkness. So I had one scary moment when the Serpent attacked, and then Morgy took a double move. So, 3 big hits for like 900 or so. Fortunately, Red Magi are fountains of hitpoints!

7 -Rockets are plenty as long as you don't mind recharging during the battle. Heck, I even recharged while in line of sight of the big J. I figured he needed some sort of handicap anyway :)
