This is actually quite comical. I have a drop dead feeling on L19 and it turns out to be a pit of Elf Lords! Instadeath, no? Except they are all friendly. Haha. So I isolate, buff up, and attack them. At 555xp a piece, I really can't resist betraying friends and the funny thing is, once I attack one, all nearby Elf Lords side with *me* and destroy their kin! Not very loyal if you ask me. Anyway, during the process, my alignment has gone from Good to Lawful, so apparently I am engaged in very virtuous behavior.

My last rand-art character (still going) inspired a few tweaks. The value of slays have been decreased and weapon pluses have been toned down a bit. We'll see how it goes.

Melee for 42 baby! Yeah!! Actually, I could do melee for 102 with my Theoden replacement, but I really, really, really, really love Balance Dragon Scale Mail, and this defender lets me wear that. 250hp of balance is nothing to be ashamed of, and DSMs recharge very quickly these days. Still, I only have about a 40% chance of activating it, maybe less. And this with a High Elf High Mage with decent Int, albeit a mighty one.

I'm down at stat potion depth, looking for my first, and hoping not to die in the process with my utter lack of detection. In fact, I should be dead now as I stumbled into a room full of DE Warlocks but they were all sleeping and my stealth is a gadzillions times better than my last character. So I just quietly tip toed back out of the room and counted my blessings.

I'm hanging on for dear life down here, hoping to scrounge a stat potion or two. For nearly 2.5 hours, I got nothing, but finally they are starting to drop. With my nice dragon slayer, I know what to fight. Everything else pretty much needs to be avoided.

The stupid Questing Beast is haunting me! For some reason, I detect and miss its presence (off screen and I'm too lazy to move the view around every 3s). I've nearly died twice to that thing ... Yikes!

And Fear is really hard for me to deal with for some reason. Oh, I know, probably my ultra low charisma, but a Craft HM really does need to pick Str/Dex/Con high to start if they hope to survive, and Int needs to be high if they hope to cast spells (What else can they do?) That unfortunately leaves Wis/Chr as dump stats, which really hurts these days.

Power up! I think I am ready for Smaug, though ideally I would have a bit more con. The Barrow Downs (nearly forgotten) proved a source of more stat potions than I've managed in 3+ hours at stat potion depth for some reason, including two of those ultra-rare, next to impossible to find potions of charisma. At some point, I'd like to be able to shoot again but I probably need another 5 or 6 charisma potions first.

On 30.9.2012 16:30 chris wrote:
Done! But it was close. I survived my gadzillion fear rolls as Smaug annihilated me down to just 100hp with his awe inspiring ferocity. Well, I was Uneasy for a bit, but managed to fight through it. Anyway, with me at 100hp and swinging for 400+ he was down to just 1 star and in fear too. But I figured I better quaff a potion of healing just in case he decided to curse.

He had my book, of course. And now my buff macro looks like this:
\emab\embb\emaf\emca\emcb\emcc\emcd\embg

Thats, Regenerate, Elemental Cloak, Heroism, Telepathy, Stone Skin, Resistance, Haste Self with a Cherry on Top: Giant Strength. Just wait until I add Mana Branding, Weaponmastery and Force Branding too :D

I backtracked from L44 to L35 to hunt Ishikawa and he stiffed me again! (Hagen too ...). So I'm stuck with this 28lb dragon slayer. Its awesome for dragons, better than I could wish for. And mana branding works nicely too (but still fails to high, and costs too much to count on). While looking for Ishikawa I got a rematch vs the Questing Beast and also killed Mordred. The latter had a pair of Shiva's Boots for me so I'm not in a hurry for The Cloning Pits anymore. I could probably manage, but I've been waiting for a better all purpose weapon.

Another Lohengrin find ... So I guess I'll try wielding a shield after all. Sometimes replacements come up short (e.g. my Shiva's boots) but sometimes they come up strong (e.g. my Celegorm, which is just sick). Actually, my Frodo replacement was stronger than the Shiva replacement for some reason if you don't mind aggravation (I do so I sold it).

I'm well out of my comfort zone, using stealth to avoid battles while looking for big, juicy dragon prey. Its working so far.

Still looking for a good weapon. I think Glamdring is the best I found so far, so its been rather lame.

Ugh ... one of the random monsters was a freakin' Bloodthirster! Oh ... my ... god! If you haven't fought one recently, you better watch out. Fortunately, my 9d8 axe was enough to slay it though I was a bit surprised it could levitate and chase me across the chasm. I guess I should have known that. It only took 2 !Healing but my 200+ AC had a lot to do with that. Otherwise, the quest was a snap. I only waited til L40 for the extra attack and the fact I already had a Shiva's Boots. But the reward was another pair of Shiva's Boots. I like the first pair better because shards resistance is rather nice.

As usual, extra attacks trumps most anything else, so this might be my end game weapon. I've already found a couple more deadly weapons on a strike per strike basis, but they can't compete with the extra blow.

I'm giving up about 100 damage per round for one reason, and one reason only: Vampirism. This will save the need to heal at all versus most dragons, except the big ones like Wyrms of Chaos/Law/Balance. Also, Kill Dragon is very useful at the moment.

I'm up to 65 replacements and at this point in the game, they are literally flying in my face. Once I hit 100, that should slow down a bit.

AC 206. Stealth Legendary[5]. At this point, I am more powerful than my Ares character, I think, though my damage is only 20 to 30% of his. But I can fight 1v1 and double resist, which effectively triples my hp in many situations. In fact, I put my Ares spawn on hold once GWoMC started showing up regularly even though he had a rand-art that (slowly) activated for double resistance. It was just too frustrating playing the equipment juggling game, and with no stealth, he couldn't rest for a recharge.

On 1.10.2012 04:27 chris wrote:

I really need a touch more hp before taking on GWoC and GWoL. 900hp would be fine, but I almost never berserk so I'm usually at 870 which is in range of a double breath death. But I figure with my speed advantage that I can roll the dice a bit, and it is a quick way to level up. Of course, I'm looking for GWoMC but I've only found one so far.

The uniques down here are downright scary, but Glaaki wasn't too bad. My vampirism didn't work on him but the fool kept summoning hydras, giving me recourse to 200-300hp whirlwind healings. Very nice, and I think swapping Whirlwind Attack to the 3rd book was a good idea. With Passwall in the fourth, it is less overpowering, especially as you can never even count on finding your book before the very end. Well, if it gets too bad, I'll go for the Dark Caves, but I'm trying to recall how hard Null is. I think I could take him now with resources, but I'm not sure.

Rather than the Dark Caves, which are *hugely* annoying, I decided to head to Olympus and dive to L95. With my amulet's enlightenment, I then began my search. First, a blue dragon nest showered me with stat potions, something I've been missing a bit in the Arena. Maybe 8 or 9 potions and an Augmentation too. Also, I chased down another 6 or so stat potions on various levels before my book finally spawned ... inside a vault (Duh!). And standing on top of the book was a pack of 20 Mana Hounds. Hmm ... But I was able to lure, destruct, lure, destruct and then sprint for the book.

Now, should I dive in Olympus and look for rings of power? Or should I finish leveling up in the Arena?

Kaschei and Cantoras are two of the more fearsome foes you will face. Fortunately, I was able to handle both of them, though Cantoras has left my heart racing quite a bit. You really don't want to lose turns against that guy, as he can easily finish you off if your fear gets the best of you. Passwall helped quite a bit, of course, though he still had me Petrified for a while.

I made a Diamond Edge artifact, but it was disappointing (Fire Brand and Kill Dragon). Probably I should have waited for some good dragon armor instead? I dunno, I'm a bit worried about the -50 AC biff from my Rune Sword and was hoping for a replacement.

Still, my Rune Sword continues to grow in power. I almost don't need to cast Mana Branding anymore :)

By the time I buff, I only have 45sp left to drive my force brand (2 strikes).

Also, quick question regarding Drain Charges. Namely, in that it doesn't seem to be draining recently. I've often been drained of Food, my Staff of Healing seems remarkably resilient to Archliches et al. Was this an intentional change at some point?

(BTW, the code for drain charges is still make 10 attempts, rolling 1d23, each time picking a random slot in your inventory. Maybe you are just getting lucky? (22/23)^10 is 64%.)

The key Craft buffs are pretty short: 8+1d8, 10+1d10, 12+1d12. Eating magic takes quite a bit to restore (15 or more actions for 540sp). Plus everytime you retreat into walls and come back out, you spot your opponent a free first move.

I'll even nerf the force brand a bit ...

I was able to kill Raphael even with the fear aura and my pathetic 18/140 charisma. It took a long time, but I finally remained confident long enough to drain those last 4 stars.

Weapon analysis reveals my Pattern Mace of Disruption is my best end game weapon, but is too heavy. Second place goes to my +1 attack Holy Avenger, so that might get the nod. But in the mean time, as long as Mana Branding can find a hole in monster resistance, this slaying trident works best.

Sorry, you just ticked me off above.

I didn't nerf force brand for Craft. I think Craft power was just where I want it, except for that Extra Attacks Heavy Lance which I have already fixed. Rather, I nerfed force for the Rune-Knight and for the Mauler, both of which are much too strong in my book. For example, if you removed your shield and maxed out your strength, I bet you'd be doing 2,400 with Chainsword and 1400 with your Trump HL. The other Rune-Knight winner is doing >3000 damage (adding crits), though there is a +2 ring of attacks in that dump which is no longer possible.

My Mauler with Iron Ball is doing 2700 - 3700 damage. Even with nerfed force, he is doing 2000-3000. Probably, the Mauler needs to lose the force brand altogether. The Rune Knight would be better with just 4 blows max. And I'm not too happy about Ares' helm. Perhaps Olympians should not drop 100%?

The damage numbers I am working with for melee are:
500hp: Borderline for the final battle but doable.
600hp: Your average 5 attacker with a good weapon.
700hp: Monks and single wielding warriors.

Nobody should exceed 1000hp melee damage except for Berserkers, which don't count in my book. Dual wielding may yield higher numbers, but accuracy should bring it down. If you melee for more than 600 damage after accuracy and monster AC damage reduction, you are too strong. Also, those numbers are assuming no shield and two handed wielding, which typically adds as much as 15% to your totals. So if you choose to use a shield, I wouldn't want to see more than 850 or so for your damage output. So you see why 1932 pushes my buttons.

A Craft HM should score in the top tier for melee, as good as monks and warriors. This is consistent with mages being weak early on, and the strongest finishers and is how mages have always played. Before I nerfed Force, I was doing right around 700 and now it is 600. I can live with that change (Also, I would not consider Mana Branding at all in these calcs ... Only what works on the Serpent).

I'm OK with the guidelines, but I'm a bit wary of trying to "overbalance." Clearly, some races are going to do better than others. Tonberries just will have more end-game melee damage, and likewise with Hephaestus. With my Rune Knight, my accuracy was only about 57% vs AC 175. If he was anything other than Hephaestus, his damage would have been about 900 * .57 = 513. And that's with the Helm of Ares.

Chainsword is crazy, but really you can bump up the rarity of it (or even nerf it) if that offends your sensibilities. I'm of the opinion that the end-game is unplayable for Rune-Knight if you reduce attacks to 4 though... you can't expert everyone to find Chainsword or Vorpal Blade for the end-game. (Remember that I killed Ares pre-AC buff.)
