That 4d7 short sword of slaying that Lion Heart dropped 3 minutes in ended up having a poison brand too, a sad fact I learned when I sold it for much needed gold. But Farmer Maggot had just dropped this Trump weapon which has the very necessary attribute of FA. It also gives resist nexus and poison, so I don't feel too bad.

I was fixin' for some jelly spammin' in the sewer, when I wondered the crocodile and melted all those jellies away. So L17 in and L17 out. That's when I headed to The Castle and my first level was special! But I wouldn't stand a chance and had to settle for pelting Livingstones with magic missiles, and eventually with stone to mud. I killed 800 and that was much better than Undead Masses as I catapulted all the way up to L24!

Time for Angband, as I didn't feel I could handle the orcs. An early drop dead feeling was a vault, and I put the time into clearing it. The result was a gadzillion un-identified potions, scrolls, wands, etc. I read all the scrolls, aimed all the wands, used all the staves and zapped all the rods. I ignored the shrooms and picked up 8 or so of the 15+ unidentifed potion kinds and headed back for town. Somehow, I managed a !Wisdom in my choices :)

Then I spent all my gold to armor up for the orcs, and just barely made it out alive. You really need AC 50 or 60 for that quest unless you have stealth, but I could only afford AC27. So I quaffed 2k worth of CCW in the process, exacerbating by money troubles. But Golfimbul dropped a shield of resistance ...

... And that was fortuitous since the next trip down had some Quartz Veins. FA from maggot and resistance from Golfimbul, and I have Stone to Mud, Light Area, Create Food. What else could you need? Ah, but they stop dropping gold after you kill so many, and I only managed about 210k.

The shops had a couple speed staves, so I did the mimic's. A couple nice drops of Elvenkind and a rand-art helm, so I can lose that shield, but don't gain any more blows. So at the moment, I am melee with a dash of mana bolts, though the fail rate is still prohibitive. It runs off charisma? Now that is unfortunate. I'll need to find a way to survive at stat gain.

Well, not quite. I mean, I pulled it off but it was tough going. Its always a bad sign if one of the Jurts nearly kills you with melee, but that was the situation I was in with <500hp and <100AC. Plus, I was playing musical weapons with Aranruth for Levitation and Hagen for See Invisible. And that last Bokrug got a Greater Basilisk which also nearly killed me ... with melee.

And how many mana bolts did it take to clear the Grendels and Rogrogs? About 20 runs thru my mana! I guess I need regeneration at some point.

But, in the end, when the dust had settled and the blood congealed, I discovered the effort was not in vain. There they were, shiny, pretty, immaculate. Those lovely lovely boots :D

Yeah, that's a bug. For a Crusade weapon, the code was blindly incrementing the pval rather than setting it to 1. So my Diamond Edge, which began life with a pval of 4 due to sharpness got the uber boost. It hurts, but I can't use that in good conscience, so I hacked the load code to "biff" it down to:

a Diamond Edge (Crusade) (7d5) (+25,+29) [+3] (+1 attack)

Sigh ... I'll just have to make due with this garbage. So no need to ?Art my other edge, I guess?

There were enough remaining D's for L47 so I'm a bit saddened, but after killing the first wave I was having a hard time separating for 1v1 battles. Given their enormous propensity to breathe on their first action, fighting more than one at a time would be suicidal. As it was, my Quickwalk, Lohengrin and Amber activations saved the day. 12 rounds to kill one, me at +28 speed, them at +10. Still, I frequently got 3 or 4 breaths for my troubles.

Well, I didn't get the L49 talent I wanted, but this will have to do. Also, my life is only 93% (I had a 114% go by in the process, the only life I've seen over 95% other than my starting 100% life). For abilities, this is nice. I regain Clairvoyance, a must since the Jewel is virtually impossible to find. And while I missed my target L49 talent, I got what I wanted for L47: Building Up. This makes up for my below average life rating! And you know what, Starburst is pretty sweet too, but I was hoping for a pure melee build. I also got Stoneskin, Eat Magic, Healing I and Grow Mold. So this will *have* to do :D

The Serpent was somewhat similar ... The Destroyer joined the battle (unsummoned) early on, and so did Azathoth. I managed to destruct the Destroyer, but Azathoth proved elusive, and tailed along for the entire battle. When Mr. J finally did drop, I couldn't even manage to get the loot since things had gotten a bit out of hand.

Pure melee for the win, and my Startburst never saw action.
