Here's another go at the Mauler. I must say my last go felt grotesquely overpowered, and a little Wizard-mode exploration leads me to believe that one can win with just a vanilla heavy lance and a 2x Slay Sentient. So 2x it is ... Plus, I think all the weaponmastery changes really benefit this class in a big way.

I confess to cheesing the early game, picking a race/personality combo designed to give 3 attacks as quickly as possible. (This was after my Yeek learned that 3 attacks wouldn't come to L25, or possibly L30). That, and some wilderness spamming ... Its less than honorable but not too bad. L18 and 3 attacks in 3 minutes or so.

The Orc Caves are a nice starting dungeon, and I was powerful enough to just dive down and kill Azog. His ring was nice, so I decided that the DQI ring would match nicely, but, alas, I got a pathetic AC boost on that one. So I'll need to manage with just AC 107. I am grotesquely overpowered again, but I think that will change once I dive deeper and face the dangers that lack of FA offers. That and the fact that I have about a 0% chance of improving my melee any more as I've maxed out attacks, and heavy ego weapons are highly unlikely.

First life -4 to key stats, 91% life. Second life: -5 to key stats, 90% life. Here is life #3 though I don't have any knowledge of it yet, other than Dex is 18/70. I hate games were I quaff !NewLife as I find them... :(

So, off to Anti-magic caves where I scored poison resistance at last (and playing L40 without it is suicidal IMO). Also, I found a sleeping Gachapin and figured why not? He chaosed me on his first move, but I kept pounding on the square I thought he was on. When my vision returned, I found some nice boots: Shiva's!

Whoa! I nearly died trying to artifact my mace ... twice. First, in setting a recall point in R'lyeh I was on the run from Biketal, teleported away, and a Cyberdemon tagged me with a rocket. Next turn my recall kicked in to save the day, so I settled with L83. Of course, DQII itself was not too bad. Then, I recall down to read the scroll and got a nice roll, but nearly died again! Chased by Spectral Wyrms I teleported and got sent hallucinating. Teleport, cure and more Spectral Wyrms! Teleport and run from Gandalf. Teleport and run from more Spectral Wyrms and Biketal. Teleport and I'm back to the hallucination pit were I get taken down to 300hp to boot. Teleport and flee! 2 Graveyards, a Demon Pit and Biketal were after me, and I barely made it back alive. Stealth? Stealth??

A long wait to cover resists finally paid off. I failed completely on an early GCV but managed to clear the second one quite recently. Atlas and The Destroyer were smack in the middle, and Atlas beat up everything in sight (except the Destroyer), annihilating a nice Mace of Disruption I had my eye on. After that vault, I still lacked shards resists so persevered at the top of the lair and finally scored a pair of lucky cloaks in a Titanic vault. I'll go with Tuor since it has acid immunity. I also got the Palantir so I can give up Thranduil at last, though losing my nice phial necessitates Hammerhand to make up for the stat loss. Still, AC is nice at this point.

Now, I need some decent rings of speed.

Speed and resists are good, except for blindness resistance which is actually rather troubling (no escape). I'm only using Hammerhand for AC so perhaps I would be better off with Thranduil and my phial? I'll have to remember to swap next time I'm in town.

Charge drainers are far too common at this point, but I can't really commit the potion resources to kill everything. As an example, Mephistopheles took 6 healing to kill, mostly because he got 3 Hands of Doom to work despite my heroic saving throws. That's a lot of healing for a single monster when there are many more just as bad ... or worse (eg Loki and the Tarrasque). Perhaps my newly acquired Death Force will speed things up?

Actually, its not that bad and some builds will do better than others. I declined to wait for uber gear or to hunt down all the key uniques. Instead, I figured 45 !Healing, 31 !*Healing*, 8 !Life and 30?Destruction would rule the day. Also, 72 !Speed. In the end, resources were tight, speed came up a bit short, and the Serpent nearly did me in quite a few times. He's good for over 1000 in a single round (double move of course) and he nearly won when he pummeled me down to 250 and summoned Hephaestus and Habu (among many others). I *had* to teleport, and the pair only took me down to 100. I then *had* to destruct, which fortunately worked. Actually, I probably should have healed but I have a lot of trust in the efficacy of those scrolls, and not so much trust that *healing* would have saved me.

Geez, I felt like a rag doll getting tossed about by massive earthquake criticals. Also, my speed counters depleted rapidly and I wasn't very effective without the death force with just 3 attacks, so I often had to teleport away even if the serpent hadn't uber summoned yet.

When I scored the winning blow, I was surrounded by Cyberdemons and there was so much danged about, I dared not risk a teleport. Time to retire!!
