Tired of playing with the same set of abilities and skills time after time? Well happily, the cure exists in Chengband, and it's a class with a very fitting name, the Wild Talent.

Not only do you receive one wild talent every odd level, but they can be scrambled by potions of new life, or by chaos (if you're not resistant). I got scrambled once from what I saw as a mediocre set of abilities to an even worse set of abilities (at level 27 or so)--lost Detect Doors/Traps, Detect Evil and Stone Skin, and gained Telepathy in the trade. Not a game-ending trade, but it made me scrounge for some rods of trap detection and door/stair location.

Aside from Telepathy, the next nice ability came along in the form of Healing I. Highest damage wild talent definitely is Breathe Fire (like a Greater Balrog) but it's quite expensive, and spell revenge can be no fun. Perfect, however, for packs of mid-level hounds or dark elven warlocks.

As I tend to always gravitate towards melee, I've kitted myself out with some midgame gear (although Julian and Fingolfin can be considered endgame), and left a few resistance holes (shard, blind, fear) in favor of being able to wield Crisdurian with a ring of extra attacks. I hardly use the weapon, but I'd have to say it's doing pretty good at the depths of the Dragon Caves. Caine and Tiamat are the highest profile personages to fall before the gargantuan blade, so it's really holding its own for now.

Raou was quite the pain in the Angband random quests, as I only had Soulsword against him, which does no extra damage, him being of good alignment. Got heavily stunned once by his powerful monk-strikes, but actually managed to cast Healing I out of it, along with the numerous times he lightly stunned me. Oh yes, I must give a TREMENDOUS NOD to Quick Walk. It's a nasty Ninja-class ability that makes movement blitzkrieg fast, with the penalty being lack of regeneration--it enabled me to melee tough uniques, and retreat a couple of steps to heal up if need be, and re-engage with initiative, more often than not.

Now that I'm level 41 as an Amberite, grind phase has definitely set in. Grind for gear, and the considerable experience any Amberite takes to get to 50. I do so love them though, as their stats are absolutely phenomenal, and they have Pattern Mindwalk, which is a combined Rod of Restoration and Rod of Curing...as a racial ability :)

Here's hoping I don't fall to the mighty Careless Player Syndrome. Unforgiving in any version of Angband, but especially in Hengband/Chengband.

Transitioned to the Mines, and then took out some more uniques in Angband. Failed Uriel, as my limited resources ran out continually *destructing* and teleporting from the gigantic hordes of angels he kept summoning. Grrrrr.... when we meet agin, Uriel is going to get a royal spanking.

Loki was the most recent quest unique to get taken out, still using the faithful Crisdurian. Against the fickle god, lack of blindness resistance proved to be quite troublesome, as my only means of curing healing were my 3 pots of healing, 2 pots of *healing*, 1 pot of life (which I found just before engaging him) and Pattern Mindwalk (which is generally impractical in combat situations). On top of all his nasty, nasty spells, he hits to blind--enemies which melee to blind seem to drop a huge load of counters on the blind meter. So, I made maybe 3 different anti-summoning corridors, and after using all of my potions except for the pot of life, I finally did him in.

As melee has been nerfed in Chengband as compared to Hengband, it took approximately 5 rounds of melee with Crisdurian to take off one star off his life. That's a lot of rounds to go toe-to-toe with such a fearsome opponent. I actually ended up fighting him blind for maybe 20 or so rounds to conserve my blindness-negating potions. On top of his blindness attack, he has another attack which drains some mana per hit, so I was only able to cast Healing I about 6 or 7 times before my mana was empty.

I have to thank the nicely customizable autosquelcher in Chengband--thanks to my listing of Leather Jackets as an item to be desired, I picked up everyone's favorite armor, the Leather Jacket of Shiva's Avatar.

I've also stocked up on two potions of new life...it's really tempting sometimes to reshuffle the abilities, but it's also quite risky, and I've sorta gotten used to the current set that I have, although very few abilities get used, namely Telepathy, Healing I and Quick Walk. Breathe fire gets the occasional workout, and Healing II might get used when its fail rate is lower.

I'm not quite sure where to head now, but I'll probably spend a bit more time in the Mines stocking up on healing stuff and hopefully getting a better weapon, such as...say...the other unique Executioner Sword :D (pretty please?).

Hmm, I guess I can mention a couple of other abilities that get frequently used--Alchemy converts items on the spot into gold (at lowest Charisma rates, I think), which is nice for all those dungeon books that start piling up. Of course, I made a bad, bad boo-boo when I accidentally converted Fundin Bluecloak's corpse (into 0 gold), and he just happened to be one of the wanted uniques :( So no scroll of artifact creation from that angle.

The other ability that is very nice to have, albeit quite expensive at 40 sp a cast, is Breathe Disintegration. Not only does it create a cone-shaped tunnel through stone to wherever you target it (max range is LOS), it also vaporizes anything that isn't an artifact. Great for sorting through the loot piles from good- and great-drop monsters.

Can't you cast spells while blinded? (I actually can't remember, but you should be able to). Congrats on the Jacket :D

Yep, spells worked while blinded. Definitely a lifesaver against Loki.

Clvl 50 @ 14:47

Hit level 50 by virtue of running between dlvl 83-87 of Angband, and killing a bunch of high level uniques, chaos hounds, great wyrms of all sorts, monsters just getting in the way, and grabbing the occasional potion of experience.

The level 49 ability (which wasn't usable until level 50) was Magic Rocket II, which hits for a whopping 500 damage per cast. The fail rate is 8%, which seems to be the minimum fail rate. Just for kicks, I donned Beruthiel, which in Chengband is definitely not the worthless piece of garbage it is in all the other bands. It increases spellpower by 8% per pval, but for every 8% boost, all your physical stats (str, dex, con) are -1. So...while Beruthiel grants an insane +192% spellpower, it reduces str, dex and con by -25. Ouch. Check the screenshot for that sweet, sweet damage though...1461! O_o However, Magic Rocket II seems to use one of the physical stats to determine its fail rate, so that fail rate of 59% definitely makes using it in combo with Beruthiel completely impractical. Oh well, I can always dream.

2nd unique executioner sword sadly wasn't Slayer, but instead was this worthless piece of junk randart "Adenine." Beware the randarts using chemical names, I guess. All the ones I've ever found using an amino acid, nucleic acid or other chemical name all seemed to suck. Whatever.

I've been dealing with a surprising dearth of potions of resistance, both through use, and simply not finding them. This has led to some risky unique and dragon killing, but with 0% fail 300 and 500 HP heals and playing smart, I was able to get away with it (so far).

Finally, Shuma-Gorath dropped the completely wicked randart Zweihander that I'm lugging in my inventory--a force weapon that slays human and is also a fire brand. This leads to some sweet damage with the multiplicative effect of the force brand, but of course, its usage is quite mana hungry, as force weapons's extra damage is fueled by mana. No more mana, no extra force brand damage. I don't know the exact reference, but I suspect it's from Final Fantasy 5, where you could find the Rune Axe, Rune Bell and Rune Sword, which always dealt critical strikes at the cost of mana per hit. The more famous versions came afterwards in Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the US) with the Rune Sword, Ragnarok and Illumina.

Speaking of which, if you ever start adding stuff again, Chris, I think you should put Illumina in as another uber-rare artifact, like Muramasa ;)
