    What about making the scales much larger? Say, at least four times the size of these scales. Then there's room to show some detail; I picture dragonscale armor as rather glossy, myself.

      Making them look something like this, only the set would be a scale mail, not a dragon scale plate armor as seen in the example?

                                The distressed looking ones are the chaos, law, balance dragon scale mails. Once complete, I'll take suggestions to have some of the tiles changed in any way, but I won't guarantee it will happen to a lot of them, at least not complete repaints for a large bunch, I'm thinking more in the ways of details such as you've just suggested here now.
