That said, since Angband is GPL'd, we'd like the Angband icons to be released to us under the GPL, which means that other authors could also use them under the GPL. Is this OK?

If you'd rather not do this then we'll need to distribute the tiles separately to avoid licensing problems with e.g. Debian. Not a huge deal, but worth knowing about. What do you think?

Thanks, and keep up the great work!
That is a really good point, as the GPL does allow others to profit from your work (e.g. by selling their variant on eBay) - but it doesn't allow anyone to restrict access or usage (so whatever they sell on eBay must also be GPLd and therefore available for free).

If you are concerned about this, check out the Creative Commons "non-commercial" licences. These explicitly prohibit any profit-making activity - but as d_m says, they are not considered truly "free as in freedom" (e.g. by Debian).

When the tileset is finished, just let us know what license you've chosen and we'll package accordingly.

This claim to define freedom - which is arguably by definition undefined - inspires me to do a new version of the McConnell Licence.

      The MLv2 goes something like:
Do whatever you like with this code. I reserve the right to think poorly of you, and to encourage others to think poorly of you, if you act like a jerk.
      Interpret that, Debian.

I have not read the text of any of the license agreements that go with the Angband/Angband variants yet. But if they state that my tileset can be used with versions/games/projects that are made to be sold, then I will have no choice but to say no to those.

Then you definitely don't want the GPL; you'll need an explicitly non-commercial licence, perhaps like this one.

That looks pretty much like something I'll end up with Magnate.

Looks awesome, until now I've been a bit turned off by the lack of graphics, but the pictures itt would definitely get me to give Angband another shot.

                  Awesome
After taking a 2 week break, I'm about to pick up the work to complete the Angband tileset again. In addition to this, I'm also creating graphics for several other games, so it will take a little bit longer to finish than initially planned, but no longer than a few months.

                      No, evolution. MLv1 is deprecated.
