That is a really good point, as the GPL does allow others to profit from your work (e.g. by selling their variant on eBay) - but it doesn't allow anyone to restrict access or usage (so whatever they sell on eBay must also be GPLd and therefore available for free).
If you are concerned about this, check out the Creative Commons "non-commercial" licences. These explicitly prohibit any profit-making activity - but as d_m says, they are not considered truly "free as in freedom" (e.g. by Debian).
When the tileset is finished, just let us know what license you've chosen and we'll package accordingly.
