Rules are basically the same; no picking up or using items on the floor (even corpses), no buying items from the store, etc. etc. Essentially, I have to survive on my wits and skills alone.
The one difference is that this character took a few random quests because he needed Mindcraft from FF... The early game is still pretty much the same (though tougher since I didn't *start* with Mindcraft), but Angband is going to be much, *much* harder.
I finally got the last +modifier to Mindcraft at Mordor 2250, in a quest for Hell Knights. Hell Knights are *hard* when you don't have Mindcraft backing you up. After a couple of near-death experiences, I swallowed my pride and dumped a bunch of points into Mindcraft at .4, which gave me Adrenaline Channeling and Minor Displacement, which I needed to keep up to speed with the Knights and escape from them if necessary. I then assaulted them with Vampirism, which is my most powerful attack.
It went pretty OK until the last one, which summoned a Phantom that mindblasted me TWICE before I could kill it with Pulverize. Sanity drain is a pretty serious drawback for this character, since the shops in town won't heal it and I can't use potions to cure it... but I found a solution. Since Undead Form cures insanity (among other things), I went to Moria and stood next to an Uruk until it killed me, thus forcing me into Undead Form, then used Mind Wave to eradicate all of the other Uruks in the group and return to life. Poof! Full sanity again :). This is perhaps my first *intentional* death ever ;)
This character also had a weird experience in a room filled with Flying Skulls and Snaga. I didn't see the Skulls, which I knew I shouldn't use Mind Wave on (they'll backlash the attack and kill you), so I merrily cast the spell. Wham! Suddenly I'm in Undead Form, confused, with only 3 hit points remaining... but then Mind Wave struck the group of Snagas, destroying them all and returning me to life, still with 3 hit points and a lot of anxiety. Fortunately I was standing on a staircase at the time...
Anyway, this character offers some advantages over my previous attempt. Undead Form is perhaps the biggest, but I've also got the ability to create and destroy walls from Thaumaturgy and the ability to cast Vampirism... both good things. I also have a much higher multiplier in Monster-Lore. Disadvantages include lower hit points and the aforementioned quests, which I know will cause me grief later on.
In Moria now, gaining piety so Melkor will grant me fire immunity. Then I'll go get some companions...
On 30.8.2006 19:10 lorddimwit@hotmail.com wrote: Level 50 now!
Levels go by quickly when you've got 6 GWoP companions giving you 120% XP from every kill :)
Actually I'm down to 4 GWoPs and one of Balance now since three of the Wyrms perished in a titanic (literally titanic; Kronos and Atlas were involved) battle near the bottom of Mt. Doom. But I gained three levels from that little tussle, so I guess it wasn't a waste.
Killed the Necromancer, Feagwath, Shelob, and the Watcher, but still no Ring. I'll look for it from papa dragon, but if he fails to cough it up I'll be headed for Angband. The prospect does not enthuse.
On 31.8.2006 08:02 lorddimwit@hotmail.com wrote: All done...
Mt. Doom took FOREVER; my pack of GWoP companions could kill pretty much everything there, but the monsters were all jampacked in those twisty little corridors... I needed to get my Wyrms within view of them without having them breathe on me and thus wipe me out in an instant. In the end, I wound up inching forward using Wall Creation and Wall Destruction, then teleporting the monsters away one by one using Telekinetic Wave. They usually ended up behind me, where my Wyrms would gleefully pounce on them.
I also found that, for some insane reason, GWoP, unlike most dragons, can't cross water. Huh???
After destroying the Ring, I just walked back to the stairs--even with only single fire resistance (from Character Armor) the lava didn't do much damage, and when I got hurt I could just leech some HP from my companions using Vampirism.
Following this was a long, boring period in Angband looking for Sauron, who went down pretty easily. Morgoth was even easier, but I used what might be considered too easy a tactic (see cmovie).
Wheee....

One question, though : how did you manage to summon your GWOPs? I don't recall vampirism or mindcraft giving summoning habilities, but I may be wrong.
On 6.9.2006 05:04 lorddimwit@hotmail.com wrote: Well, I described the whole process in a comment attached to my last attempt at the itemless character, but the short version is that you can Dominate (using the Mindcraft spell) monsters that summon. If you're a Melkor worshipper and your piety is high enough, you can also find a monster that you know won't kill you quickly (like a Snaga) and let it hit you until your HP gets really low and Melkor summons monsters to your aid. I forget which technique this character used; I think the first one.
In any case, the easiest way to get GWoP comapnions is to get some Lesser Balrogs or Nycadaemons from Mordor using this method, then take them to the first few levels of Mt. Doom, where the monsters they summon are high-leveled. What you're looking for is a Pit Fiend, which can summon Ancient Dragons... once you've got some Ancient Dragons that summon more Ancient Dragons, it's only a matter of time before some GWoPs show up...
A little disingenuous? Perhaps, but you've got to cut some corners with a character like this ;)
This is probably the toughest character I've ever played; you learn to take *nothing* for granted... I was hoping that it would be a good training exercise, but it was more of just a horrible chore...
On 6.9.2006 12:04 remuz@free.fr wrote: Truely impressive. I had though of woshipping melkor to get some high-level demons, but did not think about them summoning again... nicely done!
For the next challenge, what about some egoless summonless character? Now, depending on the choice of class, this could prove an even worse challenge than this char (possessor and mage would be doable, I think, any warrior-like character would be horribly painful).

At this rate the next win will probably be a naked spectre sorcerer yeek who only does melee but still has a maxed sorcery skill O_o
