Barrow Downs is almost clear, and I have already found some nice equipment, most notably a cloak which gave free action.

Having endured so many mentally devastating deaths lately, I'm trying to take it even more slowly and cautiously than my previous games. I wish.

I was afraid I was descending too fast. I was also afraid, that princess/FF -quests would sooner or later turn into trouble. So, an adventurer came out of the shadows, and told me that a group of Nycadaemon stole his weapon. *sigh*. With healing equipment Nycadaemons would not have been trouble, but bring in the water hounds, and I'm surprised I'm still alive. Now I don't know where to go aside from a few low-level dungeons hoping to gain some experience and possibly better equipment. Oh well - I guess I'll return to Mordor (or Moria) and wander around level 35.

I tried again the Nycadaemon-level, and it almost got me killed again. Sanity down to 5, something breathed nether which almost killed me... I was surprised to get out of the tight spot again.

In my next games I will be sure to turn off the "always small levels"-option. I hate it when awfully powerful monsters are packed tightly in the same place, where it won't be hard to destroy @.

Interesting. I just noticed I am a female character with a masculine name :) (I'm not sure how should I translate 'Ukkeli', but usually it refers to a man).

Durin's Bane was killed with considerable ease. Now, would I survive a battle against Greater Balrogs... Although I'm seriously thinking of NOT to go to the city, as it has made the return from there harder in the past (I would have to use stairs to get back to the other side of Moria).

I figured out a solution to the Nycadaemon-level. Skip it. The next quest level was a princess quest, a band of Nycadaemons were harassing our esteemed lady... Fortunately, there were only 6 of them, and were quite easy to dispose of. Two levels later mr. Fumble Fingers lost his sword to Time Hounds (easily killed, although now I'm in need of restore life levels and they aren't selling any in Minas Anor), and on the next level, Mordor lvl 50, there is a princess quest for demiliches, which I haven't completed yet.

I'm slowly beginning to kick some ass, although my tactics have recently relied heavily on mountain climbing to fight nasties one at a time and avoiding ringwraiths and others I wouldn't want to face.

A quick glance to Dol Guldur revealed that I won't be rushing there anytime soon. I *could* survive it well, but I wouldn't want to take unnecessary risks. Mountain climbing wouldn't help me there.

So, I decided to retreat to the Lonely Mountain for Wyrm Holocaust hoping to find more elemental immunities and possibly a better sword.

Currently I'm little out of ideas as to what to do next. I could go to Angband, but I'm a little afraid of it. I could venture to the bottom of the Paths of the Dead to kill the dungeon guardian in order to get... what? Probably nothing usable. Who knows. Or I could go to Dol Guldur again to investigate the torturing sounds. Or back to Erebor lvl 72 hoping to find better equipment. I would like to find an artifact pick, so I could dig *and* climb the mountains at the same time.

Finally cleared all the random quest levels in Mordor, even the feared Nycadaemon level. Princess had absolutely nothing usable to offer.

I like the round parts. Not so keen on the vertical deal though - may I ask why you decided to develop the character in that particular way?

I'm not sure what you mean? "Round parts", "vertical"?

As to character development, I have not decided on any particular way of developing it. Zombie Rohanknight Swordmaster was chosen so that I would stand some chance to actually winning the game for the first time. And, as a boring swordmaster, it was clear from the beginning that I should invest in swordmastery and the generic combat skills and magic-device, since my character was not planned to be casting spells.

I am bored with this character. However, I found Narsil, and then got Anduril, so I could stop using Nimthanc. I'm still not quite satisfied with my weapon, but I guess Anduril's quite okay especially if I acquire more extra hits by rings or other means.

Once again I am roaming around in Angband. I figured that it does not matter if I die - after all, it's just a game, and I'll end up dead anyway if I get too bored. Angband brings some excitement with high level monsters and special levels (I already screwed up level 70, crypt, where I had to recall back to town because of skull drujs blasted my sanity a bit too much, and I don't have cure insanity-potions at hand - I wish I had a junkart with cure insanity... and a rod of healing, please).

I'm nearing my goal, namely lvl 99. So far I have skipped special levels, Crypt and Dim Gates; I already told about my visit to the crypt, and in Dim Gates I figured that such a horde of Quylthulgs would certainly be too much for my character. No need to hunt for potentially useless artifacts, when all I need is the One Ring.

On 8.1.2006 18:09 lord.boredom@gmail.com wrote:
In my next game, I will not be taking any additional quests. It seems that Master Quylthulgs are extremely eager to capture princesses - Alright, lvl 96 is the second M Q -questlevel, but I'm already fed up with them. I had a couple of nice princess quests with unique monsters (read: easily completed), but master quylthulgs really are not nice. I wish there were only 5 of them, but there's 10, so my tactics of boosting speed to +90 and then killing one and teleporting to safety might not work unless they all teleport out of the princess cave.

Indeed, extra quests are treacherous. In the early game they help you a lot, but late on they are a true pain. My swordmaster winner had a much easier time beating Morgoth than the late quests. And Qs are not the worst imho. Big packs of drujs located in one small room are the true harbingers of pain and suffering for a melee char. You planning the wear the One Ring?

On 9.1.2006 07:37 lord.boredom@gmail.com wrote:
Indeed, Quylthulgs are not so bad after all; I cleared the other princess quest with not-too-much pain applying the same tactics as before. Now, on level 98, I'm in for a princess quest for Great Wyrm of Laws, which have proven to be a challenge because of level ~98 wyrms, which I seem to miss with my sword - I believe I need to discard my body armour and switch to something not-so restricting even if I lose the 20% health bonus.

As I suspected: As soon as I switched the armor I killed GWoLs easily. Now I'm on level 99 searching for Sauron - so far without any results. My fear is, that he was generated on Mt. Doom lvl 99 when I visited it some time ago. I'll keep looking, and if Sauron is not in Angband, I'll go to Mt. Doom. I realized, that there are no more additional quests left, so the rest of Angband should not contain particularly nasty levels in addition to high-level monstrosities.

As to your question, artagas, I am planning to destroy the One Ring, but if it happens that Sauron is on Mt. Doom lvl 99, and cannot appear anywhere else anymore (I'm using V2.3.2, I remember someone mentioning of this bug in the earlier versions, but I don't know about this version), so if I get the ring there, I'll wear it and claim my first victory in ToME.

So, after several desperate plunges into Angband, I finally took a look at Mt. Doom. There he was--- there he is, Sauron the Sorcerer. The question is, will he be respawned if I kill him there? I don't have the Ring yet.

Sauron is dead!

First time I ran into him after Dol Guldur took place on level 99 of Mount Doom. He did some serious damage, I needed all my junkarts of healing, and I had to consume most of my potions. Sadly I had forgotten to wear the anchor, so he teleported to safety before the kill.

Next time I met him, after a long way through the final level of Orodruin, he fell much easier. I didn't need much healing (and I had the anchor, so he really "died"). He didn't drop the ring, so the next confrontation was on level 99 of Angband, where he would have fallen easily had he not summoned some nasties (I could not create anti-summoning corridor, for when I entered the level, he was standing next to me). Still, the battle was quite a breeze.

That time, he dropped the Ring, so I returned to the Great Fire to destroy it. Then back to Angband. After a moment of stairclimbing, I found him again. This time I had the time to prepare approriate anti-summoning means. When we were facing each other, he could only do some 700 points of damage before I had him killed. Easier than great wyrms of chaos, power and such.

Oh my god, I did it.

I did it.

For the first time ever (since I do not count the one time I beat Morgoth in Easyband-variant).

The Battle against Morgoth was actually quite hard, and even now I have to clean up his summonings, and I don't know if I'll survive them. But whether I die or not, I am *WINNER*.
