Well, you asked for advice:

Level 22 and still at barrow downs level 6? You're moving fairly slowly then, (or you've had some really tough quests which have sent you up levels quickly), but that's no bad thing.

Max out swordmastery, you'll find it improves your fighting power quite a bit. Cast demon blade before tough battles (maybe you're already doing this). If you don't have enough mana, put a couple of points in Magic but don't overdo it (you'll get loads more mana when you finally manage to improve your intelligence).

You aren't carrying enough emergency equipment! Carry some potions of Cure Critical Wounds at all times, they'll save you from all sorts of deaths. You have a teleport junkart but even so I'd carry some scrolls of teleport for when it doesn't work.

Sell those mushrooms to the general store, that will ID them for you. And mushrooms are a waste of space :-)

And if you feel like trying a god, go convert to Tulkas later (there is an altar in one of the towns). Even if you never invest in any prayer points at all, he gives you some free boosts. Or Manwe is also a good option.

5 game days already, so I'm guessing he's playing conservatively.

Important Notes other than what was already mentioned:

1. Set Tactic to Furious, Set Explor to Running. The extra +4 speed helps wonders.

2. Sell the boomerang you're wielding. It has a 1% chance of breaking every time you throw it, and no monster is worth 10k+ to kill at the moment. 10k of gold will easily buy you tons of potions and scrolls.

3. You've put WAY too many points in Sneakiness. Stop now! All it helps IIRC is Searching and Perception, which are more or less useless.

4. If you're not using Demonology much (as skills seem to suggest, with only 8.00 skill at clvl 22), stockpile the Demonblade and buy yourself a normal Dagger; it'll do more damage with. Or even go buy an enchanted one. ^^

On 15.7.2005 19:17 jules@deus.net wrote:
No no no don't go furious/running! You'll ruin your stealth and your saving throw. This is a playing style thing, but I wouldn't recommend it. Feel free to go berserker/running for the occasional hard monsters and switch back.

Even at skill level 8 demon blade is pretty cool. With just a little more swordmastery you'll get more attacks, and then the blade *should* do more damage than a dagger I think.

Points in sneakiness are of course more tempting with the current demonologist buggy skill adjustments :-) Actually it used to be the case that really high perception meant you could never bother to detect traps but I haven't tried that strategy in ToME so I don't know if works.

I'm not going that slow really.
Yeeks level up quickly, I was L2 after picking 2 locks. :o
I don't use spells becouse I have a 95% fail rate :( any advice on how to fix this would be MOST welcome
I did go berserker on the Bree home quest and it saved me (one hit kills on novice rogues) but I have'nt done that again

On 16.7.2005 05:12 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Uh... ok, from Killerbunnies:

Stealth Good = scaled value 5, => monsters have a 1 in 2^(5/3) = 3.17 chance of waking up each turn. I doubt he's getting any surprise attacks anyway with that bad stealth, and +0 speed.

Saving Throw Good = scaled value 5, => 30 real value, = 30% chance of saving against spell effects. Low enough that it's hardly any benefit.

It might be a consideration if he was a Superb in each of those, at least, but in ToME, "Good" = Terrible.

On 16.7.2005 05:21 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Oh, to answer your question, there are two ways of improving spell failure. One is to improve intelligence (which for a yeek, won't really kick in until you get to stat-gain). The other is to improve the skill (Demonology in your case).

Personally, I'd recommend to play as a warrior for now, and save up your skill points until you can actually cast spells somewhat consistently.

I just got a jewel encrusted crown of the magi [0,+14] (+3)

but I swaped out my demon blade for a randart sword I found ;)
Also if anyone is thinking of playing an yeek know that you will spend most of your time gaining money (looks at chr and shudders)

On 16.7.2005 12:00 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Depends on what you're using money for. I didn't spend that much time amassing cash with my Impossible. And CHR 8 isn't that bad. I've started out lower.

I am a little disappointed I didn't find Ringil but this was my best character ever so I'm not to upset :|
