Thought I'd try a priest for a change.

Balin is beginning stat gain. One potion of dexterity and intelligence is the total tally so far, but then again I've been at 1600'-1650' only for two or three runs.

I'd like to wear the amulet of regen, but the benefits of +3 Wis seem larger: minimum fail rate is 3% instead of 4%, but more importantly +3 Wis means +41 to maximum mana.

I'd also like to enchant my armor more, but the RNG hasn't been giving me much of those scrolls.

By the by, not having ID in a town spellbook is no fun. Lately, I've been playing mages almost exclusively, so I'm having a hard time trying to get used to it. Hoping for Insights, it's "only" 850 feet out of depth currently... ;)

On 17.7.2004 01:18 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
Time for an update.

The character is progressing nicely. Surprisingly enough for a priest, looks like WIS might the first stat to be maxed.

Nothing fantastic in the artifact department, but some useful items for this part of the game nevertheless. The crown of regen was a nice find too, although it is now redundant.

I also managed to buy the first dungeon book from the Black Market.

I'm starting to enjoy playing a priest. Lack of ID is still annoying, but the orb makes short work of uniques and there's certainly something about dispelling troll and orc pits.

Found some interesting ego-items, using both currently: Rag of Elvenkind with rPois and Glaive of *Slay Evil* which has ESP.

The rag freed up a ring slot, although for now it doesn't change much as I have to wear Ring of SeeInvis since previously I was getting that from my Holy Avenger.

The HA I swapped to the new Glaive. Telepathy is good. If I find some interesting ring I'll have to swap out the SeeInvis ring though, which means going back to HA. Current set works well presently, gotta see what kind of items show up in the near future.

Another level, another update.

Had to swap out the ESP Glaive, as I found a nice pair of shoes I wanted to wear. They replaced my FA boots, so I needed to swap out the SeeInvis ring to RoFA. And thus I need the HA for SeeInvis.

ESP is of course (very) nice, but +5 speed is nicer. And I get far better melee damage with this HA, as I get 3 blows... compared to one blow with the Glaive.

Spending some time at 2000', trying to max con.

Got all the books except Wrath of God. All essential resists are covered. Heading to 3000' shortly.

At 3000'. One close call, a nearly full strength breath from a Drakolisk (nexus) teleported me *inside* a giant pit. Luckily the Greater Titan there had already moved to a different part of the level, landing next to it wouldn't have been much fun.

On 29.7.2004 04:44 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
Forgot include a comment on last update.

I've been having fun with major demons lately. For example a group of barbazus can provide amazing amounts of exp and loot. No matter how fast you orb / dispel them, they almost always manage to summon more demons, often another full pack. Great fun, although not entirely risk free: you have to keep an eye out for bile demons, balrogs et cetera.

Other than that, I don't think I'm quite ready to dive deeper yet. 3000' feels quite good right now, not insanely hard but not boring either.

I also have a number of uniques alive on my list that are native to this depth and above, most of which I'd like to kill before descending.

I've fought Saruman twice so far. Still haven't figured out a good tactic against him with a priest with no rDis.

Certain angels worry me as well. I've killed Uriel, but he's the easy one.

On 31.7.2004 02:19 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
Saruman fell to a long corridor of runes (well, a few of them) with no big problems after all. He dropped Anduril and the plate of Isildur.

The fight against Azriel was of epic proportions. It took a long time, and there were some tight spots. It was great fun though. There's really something about taking those huge breaths, hasted on a limited supply of potions. I used all but one.

I've seen Gabriel two or three times, but the voices in my head voted 3-2 against encountering him yet. Now that I've managed to fit rDis in my set, I'll see about it. I figure I'll have to melee him in an open-ended anti-summoning corridor or something like that.

Other uniques that I've seen but decided to not fight yet are The Mouth of Sauron and Tselakus. Funnily enough, all three Bilbo's trolls are still alive, but not because I'm avoiding them -- I think I spotted each of them whilst diving, and they've chosen not to appear again. :)

Now, what I'd really like to have, is a +5 or +6 Ring of Constitution...

On 1.8.2004 01:49 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
Tselakus proved a difficult opponent once again. His summoning is truly scary, and the defining moment was definitely when he summoned Feagwath (whom I chose not to fight). After Tselakus finally died, I just quickly identified his drops (nothing good) and recalled the hell out of there. Had to abandon two lesser vaults. The level was literally *full* of all kinds of big wall passing undeads.

The open-ended anti-summoning corridor (zig-zag in two directions) against Gabriel proved to be a feasible tactic. Nothing scary, just a lot of whacking with Anduril and healing in between.

It's funny how melee disenchanters like to drop items with resistance to it. Anduril from Saruman, then Gil-Galad's shield from Gabriel.

Some Great Wyrm dropped Wrath of God at 3500'. Full collection now, although I'd like a spare copy since my DEX is not theft-proof.

A Great Storm Wyrm at 3600 feet provided a solution to my CON problem: Thunderfist. A nice weapon for a priest, I think.

On other news, unhasted speed is now +20. Would be +21 if Thunderfist wasn't so heavy.

On 1.8.2004 22:26 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
I'm now exploring uncharted territory and fighting uniques I've never confronted before. I've been to 4550' once before and died there, so this is quite exciting. :)

90 uniques known, 87 killed. Known uniques that are still alive are the Mouth of Sauron, Atlas and Cantoras. The deepest known unique is Gothmog, whom I killed on the last trip down.

Unhasted speed is +26. I'd like +30 or more, but other than that, I'm pretty much set.

On 2.8.2004 03:45 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
Uniques: 95 known, 94 killed. The missing unique is Cantoras. Been waiting for him to make another appearance for some time now.

Permanent speed is +39, so that's no longer an issue.

On 2.8.2004 20:59 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
This is it then. All uniques up to and including Sauron are dead.

Sauron was relatively easy. I dug a large area of zig-zag corridors and whacked him with Thunderfist there. Even though none of Thunderfist's slays/brands apply to Sauron, it didn't take "too" long. He teleported away three times, but I was able to lure him back to the battlegrounds quickly every time. He didn't drop anything good, the only artifact was Tulkas' ring.

Permanent speed is now +34 with only one speed ring, so I am able to wear Nenya, which rocks.

Before going toe-to-toe with Morgoth, I think I'll have to scum for some potions. Restore Mana mainly, I figure I have enough healing potions for emergencies, and speed potions aren't strictly necessary as I have enough speed unhasted.

On 2.8.2004 22:53 tuomashx@hotmail.com wrote:
Here it is, my first winner. :)

I chose to melee Morgoth. Time: approximately 40 minutes. Potions used: 4 Speed, 7 Healing, 3 *Healing* and 7 Restore Mana. The dump shows what equipment I was wearing for the final fight.

Now it's time to take a short break from Angband, but rest assured, I'll be back. :)
